Please Assess a New History Article Moncacht-Apé
I found you on the list of peer review volunteers. Please look at Moncacht-Apé from a history article point of view and add any appropriate history or other categories and templates. Neither the author nor I request a full peer review. I'm new and my interests are Citizen science and Ornithology. I try to new page patrol a couple of articles from the back of the backlog to fulfill what I consider a duty to Wikipedia. Most new pages are dreadful; I recommend deletion of far too many and do a lot of work to make many others barely acceptable. User:Feis-Kontrol researched and cited his article well. I was pleased to add a couple of obvious categories but I chose to leave adding any History categories and adding the Project History template to the article talk page to someone with more background and interest in history. - Hey there, and thank you for working on all sorts of different parts of this project and doing your "duty". I'm not really in a place where I have time to research and add to articles, but I can read and evaluate what has been written. That is more of what a "peer review" is supposed to do. I'll do that and would suggest posting a request for expansion help at the wikiprojects that have an interest in this article. Having never heard of this topic before I have no clue where to point you but if you look on the talk page you should be able to find wikiprojects that would have an interest in this subject. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition and more than 200 nations participate. The Games are held biennially, with Summer and Winter Olympic Games alternating, so that each of these is held every four years. Originally, the ancient Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, which is still the governing body of the games. The 20th and 21st centuries have seen several changes to the games, such as the creation of the Winter Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a physical disability, and the Youth Olympic Games. The Olympics have shifted away from the pure amateurism envisioned by Coubertin to allow participation of professional athletes. The growing importance of the mass media has created issues around corporate sponsorship and commercialization of the Games. World Wars led to the cancellation of the 1916, 1940, and 1944 Games. Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games
Hi. I am part of an effort to get Wikimedians access to the 2016 Summer Olympics as accredited reporters and photographers. Part of this effort includes covering the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Two Wikimedians have credentials to attend these games as reporters through Wikimedia Australia. As English Wikipedia does not allow original reporting, this is largely through Wikinews with a project page found at Wikinews:Paralympic Games. If you are interested in helping to get Wikimedians to the next Summer Olympics,I'd encourage you to assist with Wikinews efforts, and also to work on all language 2012 Summer Paralympic Wikipedia articles before, during and after the Games to demonstrate a track record of success. This is gagegs. I have been working on a new, and my first, Wikipedia article called Rittenhouse Elementary School. I'm brand-spanking new to Wikipedia, and am slowly learning my way around (slowly being the operative word). I found your talk page on a list of folks who may be willing to review new articles. 2009 Mediterranean Games
Hi H1nkles,
Thanks for providing your input! Unfortunately the timing of this review was not the best as it coincided with the end of my academic semester. I was preoccupied with the seminars, project work, exams, etc. I nominated this article on January 30, but never expected that it would take this long (more than three months) for anyone to pick it up. I've been meaning to ask you: if I renominate it a week later, would you like to review this? I'd be ever grateful. I'm not sure what's the current status. Instead, I feel like people want to complain that I took too long and that I don't know what I am doing. 2009 Mediterranean Games
Hello H1nkles. I saw that we changed the status of the GAN of 2009 Mediterranean Games. I am a bit concerned because I completed my final assessment of it and shared what it was missing. There were the grammar/tense issues. Additionally, and what I believe is a bigger issue, the article is missing a controversy/concerns section. Through searching online, I was able to find controversial events that occurred related to and during the event. I shared these and the nomination said he'd investigate, yet nothing was added. Can we please address this gap?

- Hello and thank you for listing your concerns. I did complete the review and pass it to GA. My feeling upon reading your review, reading the article and reading the review by DOM497 was that the concerns had (for the most part) been addressed. I agree that there may be need for some discussion about controversies and I will bring this up with the editor of the article. To be honest my decision came down to feeling as though the article did meet the GA criteria, had been pending a decision for a long time, and I had sought further comment from you with no response. As I stated in my second opinion review, I am one to always defer to the original reviewer but in this case, since there had been no communication, I assumed that you were indisposed or were otherwise unable to finalize the review. As such I didn't feel it fair to the nominator to continue to hold the review indefinitely. At this point I would like to try to work with the editor to address your concerns without re-opening the review since bots have done their work and it would be a bit of a nightmare to undo the process if that is ok with you. why would you not accept the inclusion of a book that describes -- in significant detail -- the winter olympics of 1928, 1932 and 1936. - Thank you for your comment and edit to the article. I reverted your edit because it does not conform to Wikipedia's Manual of Style. I am 100% in support of including historical literature. What you can do is take information from the book that you feel is relevant and add it to the article. Then cite the book and put it in the references section. That way the book is included and readers who don't have access to the book can enjoy the information from the book in the article. Hello! I want to start by saying a huge thank you for your review of Rocks and Honey. Very happy that it's been approved, hard work paid off. Thanks for your co-operation and assistance. It's appreciated!
I wonder if I could ask you a quick question just in case you know what to do about this... I saw when the Rocks and Honey page on the Hungarian Wikipedia was nominated to be listed as a Featured Article, someone advised the editor to copy the "Critical reception" content from the English version. They eventually did, and the content was copied and translated word for word. I know that on the English Wikipedia we have to add a template that says "This article contains a translation of Rocks and Honey from hu.wikipedia." Does this also apply in the Hungarian language? Just because "all Wikimedia projects use the same or compatible licensing for most of its content" apparently. Thanks, Bonnietylersave (talk) 15:28, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
- First you're welcome and yes hard work does pay off. As far as translation stuff goes, I wouldn't be a good source for answering that question. Unfortunately I just haven't run across this issue in my dealings. I know that material we write is not owned by us in that we can't claim copyright infringement if it is copied nor can we demand some sort of attribution, but I'm not sure if they are forced to add a template indicating translation. BUT that being said, I did find this policy that may help: WP:TrU. From here it does appear as though editors are supposed to acknowledge that the article was translated from English WP. This applies specifically to full articles so I don't know if that would also apply to sections but it may be a good jumping off point. Best of luck to you, oh and how in the world did you determine that parts of the English article had been translated word for word into the Hungarian article? - Well it certainly was a compliment to oversee the FA process and read that a reviewer recommended the editor follow a similar style or writing to the English version by ensuring that both positive and negative reviews are mentioned in the "Critical reception" portion of the article. Apparently their original writing only contained positive reviews, and the comment from the reviewer was a nice way for me to see that I'm starting to get the hang of Wikipedia editing. GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive
In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00. At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge. |

The 1952 Winter Olympics took place in Oslo, Norway, from 14 to 25 February. All of the venues for the games were located in Oslo's metropolitan area with the exception of the alpine skiing events, which were held at Norefjell, 113 km (70 mi) away. A new hotel was built for the press and dignitaries, along with three dormitories to house athletes and coaches, creating the first modern Olympic Village. The games attracted 694 athletes representing 30 countries, who participated in 6 sports and 22 events. There was one demonstration sport, bandy, in which three Scandinavian countries competed. Women were allowed to compete in cross-country skiing for the first time. Portugal and New Zealand competed at their first Winter Olympics, and Japan and Germany competed for the first time since World War II. Norway won the overall medal count with sixteen medals, seven of which were gold. Hjalmar Andersen from Norway was the most decorated athlete with three gold medals for speed skating. The games closed with the presentation of a flag (pictured) by the city of Oslo to the International Olympic Committee. March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive
It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:
- This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
- Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
- The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
- An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.
Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive
Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!
TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.
If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.
At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.
As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup
Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!
As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:
For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.
For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).
The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup
 WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers. Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition. Country at the yyyy Olympics
I see that you have done quite a number of GA reviews, and most importantly those in relation to countries competing at the Olympics. I've just put up Comoros at the 2008 Summer Olympics for reassessment because I don't believe that the article ever met the GA criteria. Looking at other GA class articles dealing with this topic, this is not the only extremely short article that is a GA. As an experienced reviewer who has worked in this area, I'd appreciate your input, as GA reassessment is not something that I have ever initiated before, neither have I reviewed GAs as yet; I have, however, nominated three GAs. March Madness 2017
G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

I see you've done some Peer Reviewing. I've noticed that, under 'History' section(s) for various towns/city articles, there is a WIDE SWATHE of opinions re: what is versus what isn't 'notable'. Opinions run the gamut....'Things should only be listed there if the item/event speaks to a national audience' etc. etc. ad nauseum 'A bldg. burning down is notable if its a community center for a small town.' 2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

User group for Military Historians
Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive
G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

Peer review newsletter #1
Introduction
Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:
- THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
- Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing
The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:
{{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}}- if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.{{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}}- if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.
We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.
Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review
I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.
So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.
Update #3: advertising
We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open
Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. ArbCom 2018 election voter message
Hello, H1nkles. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive
