License tagging for Image:Xkcd string theory.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Xkcd string theory.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:09, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

XKCD

Thanks for adding the xkcd image. Unfortunately the Cc-by-nc licence is not compatible with the GFDL licence used on wikipedia. Authors who licence their works as Cc-by-nc implicitly or explicitly state that they do not want to have their content posted on wikipedia.

Hmm, while it might be possible to convince the author to relicence under Cc-by-sa, it may well be argued that the image does not belong in an encyclopedic article, unfortunately.

I am a great fan of XKCD of course. But typically we can't use their images, I'm afraid.

I just deleted the image, as I'm afraid Kim is right. We simply can't use unfree images without a fair use rationale, which would not apply for the use of that image in the string theory article. I understand that the author gives permission, and I remember well the confusion I felt the first time I asked permission to use an image on Wikipedia, received it, and then realized that it still couldn't be used. See Wikipedia:Image licenses for more information, and don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions. -- SCZenz 12:07, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
