Years

I'm afraid Rubin's answer to your earlier question was not very helpful. The reason is that there was no year 0. The first year on the Gregorian calendar was called A.D. 1 (the year before that was 1 B.C.). Therefore the "first century" was the first hundred years: A.D. 1-100. The second century was the second set of 100 years, i.e. A.D. 101-200, and so on. Similarly, the "first millennium" was the first set of 1000 years: A.D. 1-1000. The second millennium was the next thousand years (1001-2000), and the third millennium is 2001-3000. People correctly celebrated the beginning of the 20th century on January 1, 1901. But this time most people incorrectly celebrated the new millennium on January 1, 2000 -- the excitement of seeing all four year digits change, I suppose.
