Project Help

Hello Dr.saptarshi. I am a student in this graduate-level course. My project is to work to hopefully get an article to good article status, and I have chosen mTORC1 as my article. I am at the phase where I am supposed to elicit responses and found your user page under the molecular and cellular biology page. If you have any input to the article, that would be great. If not, that is okay as well. Thanks. Flemingrjf (talk) 04:07, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fleming. I congratulate you for participation in a very interesting course and your interest in a very hot topic mTOR. I also congratulate your course organizers for this noble idea of enriching wikipedia through course assignments. mTOR is at an amazing cross road integrating a lot of signaling. I am myself a bit busy in real life and not sure how frequently I will come back. But I appreciate your invite and your efforts.
I am myself not new to wikipedia but your idea of putting a message at the top of the the discussion page seemed new to me. Initially I felt a bit frustrated when it took time for me to scroll to the right place. If everybody would follow this sequence this could possibly make better sense than the present convention. But I guess too many people are using the opposite convention of writing at the bottom at least of a string, if not the whole page, I guess you could be advised to follow the same convention rather than try to change the convention. Else you might add a line to intimate the reader that you chose this convention consciously for a reason.
I would request you to put wikipedia references as [[mTORC1]] so that just a click away in your discussions as well so that the reader does not have to type and search. While your assignment may be only one or two articles. if you are really interested to make a collaborative improvement in them you need to make things easier for your collaborators to participate in the discussion. So if possible insert some sort of {{reply}} type template at the end of your comments to direct the answer exactly where you want and keep the discussion organized.
mTOR is quite a huge topic and deserves a big introduction. Probably so does mTORC1 & mTORC2 if they were stand alone. But since they are not stand alone, you can insert some sort of statement at the top: "for a broad introduction on this topic please see the article mTOR" to avoid too much repeatition of the same in the mTORC1 article and also at the bottom use the ==See also== to direct the readers/collaborators.
Writing in wikipedia is usually very satisfying when you see your article grow and also your reference list grow. But I caution you that mTOR is a huge topic and a lot of still left. As for example you may not have addressed (or adequately addressed) role of mTOR is cell size and organism size regulation; mechano transduction; Cell cycle progression; You have mentioned its use in transplant rejection but not gone into its use in Cancer therapy, when you do, please also try to address how mTOR inhibition works in some cancers but paradoxically fails or worsens some other cancers; In the signaling part you need to address the interrelation between mTORC1 & 2. May be you can try to organize the headings ==Cellular level effects== and ==Organism level effects== under a bigger heading of ==Pathophysiological significance==. Hope this helps. I am pasting the last 2 paragraph in the mTOR discussion page as well since it is relevant also to others visiting that page.--Dr.saptarshi (talk) 05:52, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Birbhum.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Birbhum.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

Comment on Nichalp's Page

Hello Dr. Saptarshi,

The image you have uploaded is from a copyrighted source. The page clearly mentions that the image and all the data is copyrighted by the website concerned. If the website has itself copied it from a public source, you will have to show which source, otherwise you can't claim that the image is free. The fair use tag probably won't be applicable as the image resolution is pretty high and there is a definite possibility of free alternatives. So in my opinion, it was a bad idea to upload the image. But don't worry about it. It is clear that you were acting in good intention so even if the image gets deleted, noone would hold it against you as you are pretty new to this place. With time you will learn the ins-and-outs of the place. Even I made mistakes when I was new. Hope this clears all your doubts.

Regards,

Hi

Hi! I saw your exrensive edits in Rarh. Are you from Birbhum area? Siuri? I am in Kolkata, presently in Calcutta Medical College, a housestaff. Bye the way, the article Kolkata is a featured article candidate. Please have some say in the candidates page. Thanks. Regards.--Dwaipayanc 07:27, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Birbhum map: alternative

You can alternatively use maps from government sites, which, as a work of the government, are supposed to be free, at least, fair use. See this nic site. You should get a map there. Bye.--Dwaipayanc 07:37, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got admitted in CMC in 1999. Yes, the nic map is supposedly ok. I have used nic images in the past. Unfortunately, the map is not that good! I am from Barasat, North 24 Parganas. I need some information from you refarding professional matters. You do not have your mail id given at your user page. Could you please email me? My id is contactdc@gmail.com. Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 07:40, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Nichalp (talk · contribs) just told me that .nic maps areNOT free to use.--Dwaipayanc 18:39, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bangla wikipedia

Hi, would you like to join us in the Bangla wikipedia? (http://bn.wikipedia.org ) We need more people from West Bengal .... a lot of entries about WB and Kolkata (and Birbhum :) ) are still rudimentary or under construction. Thanks. --Ragib 08:05, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Bangla fonts and rendering support in Windows XP, you should check out http://www.omicronlab.com . They have a collection of free Bangla unicode fonts, and also Avro, a phonetic Bangla type manager. (The site may ask to register for download, but you can always use Bugmenot :) ). Instructions on how to enable unicode Bangla rendering in Windows XP is also available in the site. Let me know if you need any help with that. Thanks. --Ragib 08:17, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

YEs, each wikipedia has its own log-in and account systems. So you'd have to open an account in bn-wiki. This is the login/account cration page there. Thanks. --Ragib 08:49, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! join the Bangla wikipedia. It's great to write in your mother tongue. Though I am not a frequenter there now, I will be there soon.--Dwaipayanc 18:41, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyrights

To upload an image on wikipedia, the following "freedoms" should be allowed"

  1. Freedom for a user to make commercial usage of it
  2. Freedom for a user to make derivatives of it

Images cannot be copied from any website, because by default, a copyright notice prohibits the above.

Hence, Image:Birbhum.jpg and Image:Birbhum.subdivisions.blocks.gif are copyrighted and unless the creator has released rights to commercial and derivative usage, it *will* be deleted.

There are very few maps available unfortunately. Wikipedia:Blank maps may help you start your search on wikipedia for finding good maps. Please note: Indian government sites are copyrighted!

Another thing I'd like to point out – the file formats: See Commons:File types for the recommended file types. In this case the map should be .png

I hope this answers your query. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 18:45, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Rangoli horse.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rangoli horse.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 08:05, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi,
You got the problem because many users upload images without giving correct copyright status. I saw that you uploaded the image several times. When you did it the last time, you might not have specified the copyright status correctly. All you need to do is go to the image page, edit it, and add {{gfdl-self}} in place of the {{untagged}}. Hope this helps. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 05:16, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shubho Bijoya

Hi Saptarshi, Happy Bijoya (Shubho Bijoya). :) --Ragib 21:32, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a look at the portal. It has just been launched. I have nominated the article Birbhum District for being featured there. You had contributed a lot to that article and so I thought that I should inform you. Moreover, if you think that it can still be improved, please put in your mite. -- P.K.Niyogi 05:41, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the interest you have taken in editing Birbhum District. Please see Portal:West Bengal and record your support for this article as a featured article. -- P.K.Niyogi 13:17, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I fully agree with you that the lead in needs to be expanded, but we have to take care that there should no duplication. Your Bengali lead in is excellent for that version but the English language sentiments are a little different. That is what I feel. About red links - please avoid them as a matter of rule. When there is a page it can be linked. An article with many red links just cannot be featured. It signifies incomplete work. Thanks for all your efforts. -- P.K.Niyogi 13:27, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birbhum

I am sorry to disturb you again and again. I have message as below:

Hi! I would have really liked to support Birbhum in selected articles in West Bengal portal. But I cannot for some reasons. Some sections are small compared to other sections.( I know it is tough to find out resources). Again. some portions, like the small poem on palm tree ( It was nice to remember tal gach ek paye dariye...) is unencyclopedic, even if I sound rude. Demographics may be enhanced with religion data (may be deducible from the following sites: please see: [ http://www.censusindia.net/religiondata/] and [1]) . I shall contact u again soon. Bye the way, how about starting a "selected biography" section in west bengal portal? You have created some excellent biographies so far. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:36, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to get the religion data but I am unable to do so. Can you help?

Thanks for the excellent work you have put in. Don't worry about the slips. I will set them right but take care to avoid duplication.

-- P.K.Niyogi 04:24, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After making you work so hard and self also working for it, I am a little wary about the nomination for Portal:West Bengal. I have offered to withdraw the nomintion in a message to Dwaipayan. You can have a look at the message on his page. Anyway, I am happy that the page is in good shape and am willing to make it even better. Thanks a lot and best wishes. -- P.K.Niyogi 22:26, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your message. Let us see how things proceed. Seeing your interest in Birbhum, why don't you write an article on the Rahr area as a whole, focussing on its specialities and peculiarities? That region is somewhat unique with a rich folk-culture. Moreover, the limitations of doing a district article will not be there. You can think over it. Some of these regional flavours do not find a place in the national or state market-palce. First define the area properly and then you can get to the heart of it. You don't have to deal it demographics and geology. - P.K.Niyogi 07:02, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One more vote for the coordinator of the Molecular and Cellular Biology Wikiproject

Molecular and Cellular Biology Wikiproject Newsletter

The project main page has gotten a facelift!
When people visit the project, the very first thing that they see tends to be the project's main page, and with this in mind, the main page has been completely overhauled. To enhance readability the various "goals" sections have been merged, and a detailed "how you can help" section has been added. To increase accessibility for more established members, the links to any resources that were in the main body text have been moved onto the navigation bar on the right. Finally, the whole page has been nicely laid out and given a nice attractive look.
New project feature: peer review
I'm proud to announce the addition of out newest feature: peer review! The MCB peer review feature aims serve as a stepping stone to improve articles to featured article status by allowing editors to request the opinions of other members about articles that they might not otherwise see or contribute to.
Project progress
The article worklist
We’ve had quite a bit of progress on the worklist article in the past month. Not only has the list itself nearly doubled in size from 143 to 365 entries, but an amazing three articles have been advanced to FA status, thanks in great part to the efforts of our very own TimVickers! Remember, the state of the worklist is the closest thing we have to quantifying the progress of the project, so if you get the chance, please take a look at the list, pick a favorite article, and improve it!
Collaboration of the Month
Last month's Collaboration of the Month, cell nucleus, was a terrific success! In one month, the article went from a dismal stub to an A-class article. Many thanks to all of the collaborators who contributed, especially ShaiM, who took on the greatest part of the burden. This month's Collaboration of the Month, adenosine triphosphate, isn't getting nearly the attention of its predecessor, so if you can, please lend a hand!
Finally...
The project has a new coordinator, ClockworkSoul! The role - my role - of coordinator will be to harmonize the project's common efforts, in part by organizing the various tasks required to make the project run as smoothly and completely as possible. Many thanks to those who supported me and those participated in the selection process.

I noticed you appear to be involved in biology articles or WikiProjects relating to biology and human processes. This article, on a method for evaluating biological utilizations rates of proteins in humans and animals, was started in August and is in need of the attention of an expert. We are having trouble locating one and the article desperately needs it. This method is used constantly in bodybuilding magazines and products and is the subject of much misinformation and half-truths. On the other hand it does appear to have some value. Please help if possible. In case you're wondering why I picked you I just looked through some Science WikiProjects and biology articles and your name appeared a lot in one or both categories. Incidentally if you decide not to do this for whatever reason there's no need to reply. I'll just take it you're busy or uninterested and leave it at that. Thanks. Thank you for uploading File:Birbhum.subdivisions.blocks.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

Just some of our over 60 translations:
New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

Dear Doctor,

You made an excellent outline for an improved and restructured article on this topic on its talk page several years ago. I believe the article, although slightly improved, still needs work along the lines you sketched. If you could make some time in your busy schedule, all readers of the article would benefit.
