However, please do not add promotional material to articles or other Wikipedia pages, as you did to Alvin Ailey. July 2011 response
There has been a recent dispute regarding the addition of links to Jacob's Pillow Dance Interactive in the external links section of articles, as posted by both myself Dammersk lrq2102. Links to this website were added to pages specific to the dancers, choreographer or musician as seen in the linked video. Dance Interactive is a new archival resource containing short clips of dance performance videos available at Jacob's Pillow in Becket, MA. The links were posted in an effort to share this rare, archival footage with the greater community and to sponsor a greater interest in dance overall. However, these links were removed by editors who claimed that they violated Wikipedia's policies concerning promotional material and use of the site as a "soapbox". With this added understanding of the links and their scholarly purpose, might these links be allowed? Or perhaps might they be added in a way that does not violate the above mentioned policies? Might it be better to post with the revised title concerning just the artist and date? Example: Alvin Ailey (Recorded 1988). Thank You, Dammersk (talk) 19:38, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for this good-natured response to the removal. Several factors made these edits look inappropriate: rapid additions of external links by a new account; similar additions by two new accounts simultaneously; no explanations in edit summaries. It sounds from your explanation above as if these would in fact be welcome additions to the articles. May I suggest the following:
- that you repeat the para above in a new section on the Project Dance talk page where more people will (I hope) read it. You could title the section "Suggested addition of archive film links to dance articles" or similar.
- choose a couple of examples and add those to the appropriate articles with slightly more explanatory text that you suggest above, something like:
- Archive film of Alvin Ailey dancing (work) in (year) at (venue)
- with "Archive film" the text for the external link.
- Mention the example articles in the new project talk page section. Then wait a couple of days to see if anybody tweaks those entries and follow up with further updates taking such tweaks and comments on the project talk page into account. If you start updating lots of articles do a few at a time (or whatever the project advise) rather than all at once.
- Please do write to the project talk page: I may well be the only person watching this page... - Nobody has objected to these updates so I think it is OK to go ahead :). Please complete the edit summary field to explain every edit you make: it is easier for others to review changes if this is done and not every editor will be watching every article you update. In this case adding something like "add link to archive footage" after any prefilled section name would be fine, nothing complicated is needed. --Mirokado (talk) 17:12, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
