Greetings!

I'm Cyclopaedic, a middle-aged lawyer in England with a lifelong interest in military history, so most of my contributions are on one or other of those topics. I contributed purely for fun, and have now retired from active editing due to artistic differences..

The only two articles I've been solely responsible for writing are Barrage (artillery) and Cavalié Mercer. I made very slow progress on revising Trench warfare but only managed the first few paragraphs.

The rather pretentious username was chosen at random when I first logged on, and I've regretted it ever since.

Barrage

Well done with this article so far - have you considered adding yourself to the (small and slightly sleepy) Military Science task force? There is a big weakness in Wikipedia's coverage of tactics and doctrine as opposed to shiny equipment, impressive explosions and bloody battles. You're quite right - I think the problem with many doctrine articles is that they require quite broad knowledge of an area where there is relatively little popular writing. E.g. the perfect article on infantry tactics would have a lot of insight about how infantry has worked for the last 2,500 years, and since there are relatively few good accessible accounts of how infantry tactics worked even in World War II, this is obviously a challenge. I think one can overcome it by working on smaller articles first; I and a few others were able to write battleship, but naval warfare would have been to big a task. WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

Hi Cyclopaedic,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)

Allied war crimes during World War II

Talk:Allied war crimes during World War II basically you and I are arguing from the same hymn sheet see for example Talk:Urban warfare/Archive 1#Famous urban battles list -> stand alone list? and Talk:Last stand#Was removing the entire lists necessary?. Sometimes a way to fix the problem is to do what was done with Genocide and Torture where the lists were spun out into Genocides in history and Uses of torture in recent times, but in such cases one has to fight a continual war to stop new stubby POV lists appearing in the parent articles and the spun off articles are such POV minefields that they can never become good articles. --PBS (talk) 10:37, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am suggesting a different solution for the history of terrorism but I doubt it will happen and I seem to be fighting a loosing battle to stop Terror bombing morphing back into the POV list it was before I made a radical change a few months ago. -- PBS (talk) 10:47, 7 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About naming

I used William John Charles Kennedy-Cochran-Patrick's entire name in the article because all the sources I found used it. He apparently did not shorten it for everyday use.

When I begin one of these articles, I use the name already in the list of World War I aces. If it turns out the ace is referred to differently, I will move the article when I finish with it--after all the votes are in, so to speak. I also disambiguate as needed.

I notice that you have reported me for no conceivable reason. i belive that we also have a dispute to sort out. in my opinion the majority of the wiki population who read men of harlech article would prefer it if the lyrics were viewable on there. i hope this case can be resolved soon.

Shrapnel shell

I see you are making useful improvements to this article. You may be in mid-edit, but could I just suggest adding inline citations where there is new information added (eg "known as Boxer shrapnel"). Otherwise it may get deleted or given a Fact tag. The paragraphs are already cited and we need to make sure that we don't add information that is not supported by the cited source - unless you're referring to that source, of course. Thanks for picking me up on that - I've reviewed my references, and it looks like I incorrectly interpreted what they were saying : "Boxer shrapnel" appears not to have been an offificial designation but more a means of conveniently differentiating it from later steel-walled Shrapnel shells. The 1877 Treatise on Ammunition does not refer to Boxer shrapnel, just Shrapnel. I've referenced the exact text used in the 1887 edition to avoid misunderstandings. Miles Dempsey

Hello, Cyclopaedic (whether a misnomer or not) !

Just two remarks (which may be understood as questions as well) :

  • Although I'm not particularly interested in things military, I nonetheless try to add bits of information on pages that deal with this topic when I come across them. I agree with the fact that the etymology of his family name says nothing at all about the person; but I fail to see how this is more or less relevant than stating that he "was a direct descendant of the O'Dempseys of Clanmalier, an aristocratic Gaelic family with a history traceable to a High King of Ireland in the second century A.D." (not to mention his 17th century ancestor). After all, Ó Díomasaigh was the real name of the family, and I think one should rather talk about "the Ó Díomasaighs of Clanmalier" than "the O'Dempseys", a late Anglicized name, if his ancestry has to be mentioned. And given that, I don't consider it irrelevant to explain here, for those who might be interested but who don't know Irish, the meaning of such a name.
  • I also fail to understand the change about the information concerning the district of Caen where the street is : saying "linked with the war" seems a bit vague to me : which war ? Not the war in general (haha), anyway. The town-planners and the city council were careful about not limiting name-giving in this area to WWII personalities, but including references to peace and the making of Europe. You may not be fond of the latter personnally, but suppressing this "non military" information garbles the context in which the name was given. In other words, there is life outside the army (surprisingly enough) :o) !

Barrages

Hey there Cyclopaedic,

I thought I might just drop you a line about your recent A Class nomination for Barrage (artillery). I hope you don't get too dismayed about it, especially as it seems a worthy topic for promoting and I reckon it could get to GA fairly easily (Hogg looks like a good source to be working from). I'll admit I was a bit surprised to see it nominated in its current state and was wondering (and I'm just guessing here, not trying to be condescending or anything) if you might have thought that A class review was the next step after B class (understandably). B class and A class are both Mil-hist specific classes, but they bracket the wiki-wide WP:Good Article class. A good overview of the various classes and links to their requirements is here. Of course, you probably know all of this, so apologies for repeating it all.

I'd have thought GA would be a good next target for the article, and to help prepare it I'd recommend a good peer review. These reviews can be done at any time on any article (although preferably one with some content rather than a stub!) and have the benefit of not being as constrained by time as promotion reviews (that normally have a time limit attached to them). Editors generally are happier to pitch in and work towards improvement on a peer review as well, whereas on a promotion review they necessarily need to be more critical.

Anyway, just thought I'd offer some advice. I'm sure you know it all already though, so I'm sorry to state a load of stuff you already know. Echoing Steve, I trust the comments are merely informative rather than discouraging. I am very interested in articles on military techniques (I didn't know there was a MilHist/Science), please reply here or at my talk if you'd like to collaborate. The major challenge for a copy-editor is always a lack of access to sources and therefore citations. Standards for the required density of inline citations has grown over the years and are now very high. If you can improve inline citations, that removes the last fundamental barrier to moving forward. Dhatfield (talk) 19:26, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I gave up editing Wikipedia at this point. To have an article I had worked on for two years ranked back to start-class (=worthless) made me realise how much of my time I had been wasting. I thought I might come back to it, but I haven't. Wikipedia is a great idea, but it's been hijacked by a clique whose ambition is to invent arcane rules and then demonstrate how clever they are by showing how they can apply the the rules at the expense of everyone else. They then spend their time in mutual congratulation and giving each other awards for producing articles on narrow topics that comply with the rules but contribute nothing to to the real world of knowledge.Those whose motivation is to improve access to knowledge get squeezed out by the rules-merchants. I had a foretaste when someone told me I had to learn to love the m-dash policy! Life's too short. Worst of all, I had started to do the same things myself, and I realised I was spending all my editing time defending articles against the edits of others, many malicious but others who simply didn't read the rule-book. Thank you Keith, yes, I downloaded that yesterday from your link in the article, and it's very interesting. My grandfather's battalion (1/5 Leicesters) was in reserve and not heavily engaged on 13 October, so it did not get the mauling many other units did. my great-uncle was not so lucky: he was medical officer to an artillery brigade in 21st Division, and was killed at Loos on 26 September whilst tending a wounded man by the guns. I had a look at your barrage article, having noticed your cri de coeur and thought that it wouldn't take much copy editing to make it B-class. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Cyclopaedic. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
