Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up
 Participation: Out of 54 people who signed up this drive, 32 copy-edited at least one article. Last drive's superstar, Lfstevens, again stood out, topping the leader board in all three categories and copy-editing over 700 articles. Thanks to all who participated! Progress report: We were once again successful in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog—while removing 1166 articles from the queue, the second-most in our history. The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago. Video clip times
Thanks for the tip about the video clip times. However the copy of the video I used wasn't a commercial copy - it was a personal recording, so I don't think it would have done any good for me to get a clip time set for all of the quotes. If I had a commercial copy, I would be happy to get the clip times. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:53, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
- My personal copy was an online one. But what I meant was, I could take runtimes that would be correct in one online version, but incorrect in another online version. If I had an ISBN attached, then I can say "the runtimes are correct for that version" and there would be no dispute over which runtime is correct. Different copies of the same episode may be spaced differently for content, or for commercial breaks. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:24, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

- Hi, I've changed the text of Timothy Spall at Sea series to say he went around the British coast. Seems more elegant that saying he went around the British Isles, and then having to clarify that he didn't really, etc. It's also supported on the BBC website - I changed the ref. I know that some refs say he went around the British Isles but think it's best that this article is accurate. What do you think? The reason it is in quotation marks is that it is a quotation from the opening scene of all the programmes in the series.
That will have to be changed, as it is currently an incorrect quote. I think it is important to point out the difference between the incorrect usage of British Isles in the programme, the BBC website, and many of the sources. Great Britain = British Isles - Ireland.
I will change it back, as I think that adding more explanation would be better. For example adding "Indeed the BBC website describes it as ..." and "While other sources describe it as ..."
I am of the opinion that in most cases it is best to report all sides rather than try and decide which is the best one to pick. Chaosdruid (talk) 22:22, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- As a matter of interest, the BBC series descriptions were (chronologically): "mini-odyssey along the coast from Cornwall to Wales"; "mini-odyssey around Britain"; "trip around the British coast". The programmes themselves open with "round the British Isles", and did not change throughout the 3 series.
- Other refs also use differing descriptions: "circumnavigates Britain" (Telegraph); "round the coast of Britain" (Mirror); "sailing round Britain" (Daily Star); "around the British Isles" (Practical Boat Owner); "around the coast of Britain" (The Independent)
- For me the issue is that the trip was more than around the British Coast, as it went to Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. There is also the problem with defining Britain - it technically means the same as Great Britain, which does not include NI. To include that we would have to use "the United Kingdom". AS none of the sources say that, it would be OR to use this phrase.
- It is all a bit ridiculous - technically one only has to provide a ref to statements that are likely to be challenged, so one might not necessarily have to provide a source for using UK. Chaosdruid (talk) 22:53, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- I don't understand what you mean by "report all sides". What sides? Also, "Britain's Coast" and "British Coast" don't necessarily mean the same thing. "British Coast" can be taken to also mean Northern Ireland (but then again it would never include the Isle of Man). It's odd to use a quote from within the commentary, which we know isn't accurate, rather than use a quote from the website which is far more accurate. It would save having to explain (in the lede) why the chosen description is inaccurate. It isn't a good opening for the article. If the fact that the series uses different descriptions is important, it could be put it into a "unusual facts" section or in the opening statement in the "Series" section. If we're reporting all sides, we could then also explain how the descriptions of "around Britain", etc, are inaccurate,
- Looking up the description for the 3 series reads as follows, so the "British coast" quote comes from the "All at sea" series:
- Somewhere at Sea - A mini-odyssey along the coast from Cornwall to Wales in the company of the actor Timothy Spall and his wife Shane on their Dutch barge [1]
- Back at Sea - Untrained mariner Timothy Spall has spent a fortune on technology for his new challenge - the unpredictable Irish Sea - as he and his wife continue their mini-odyssey around Britain [2]
- All at Sea - Timothy Spall and his wife Shane are back on board their beloved barge the Princess Matilda as they conclude their trip around the British coast [3]
- There's logic in that "British coast", etc, is inaccurate (although referenced), but it far more accurate given the coastlines visited than "British Isles". Since the Isle of Man was also visited, it could read "British coast including the Isle of Man" in the lede, which is accurate and cleaner with less correction on a quoted reference. --HighKing (talk) 15:33, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
