Ancient History - Barbarosa, Suleiman, Invasion of Malta, etc.

Good morning Catalan: I am a new Wiki member and am looking for a mentor. I am also involved in writing a novel set in the AD 312-337 time period. My interest in editing on Wikipedia arose yesterday when I tried to get information concerning "galley slaves" and was shocked to find so little about them. Under that category only Greek and Roman galley slaves from the 1500's forward are discussed. And their lives are pictured as tea parties compared to a book on the subject, Empires of the Sea, Siege of Malta, Battle of Lepanto, and the Contest for the Center of the World by Roger Crowley. 2008

So, my interest, (by the way, I am a retired person) is Ancient History. Aside from this gap in Wikipedia's data base, I figure I can contribute additional bits and pieces of world history,as I come across the data and be of service to you. I have no agenda, other than insuring that subject matter from an historical viewpoint is comprehensive.

Hey Mac, long time no see. I tried to look over the article, but to be honest it's somewhat far outside my safety zone of MILHIST. The biography stuff was fine, but I just started glazing over with the economic theory doodahs as I don't really understand a word of economic theory. However, economics aside, it looks like a polished and well-researched article, so I can't see it having any problems. If you do ever decide to do some more MILHIST work, ping me if you need a review or some copy-editing. I'm not hugely active, but I'll make sure to spare some time. Also, I'm gradually reading my way through a lot of your articles both at Mises and Economic Thought. You clearly know your stuff, though I am finding myself disagreeing with large chunks of it (which I suspect is mostly due to ideological differences. I still don't know what it would be about, the topic is part of the project. So if you come up with any suggestion it would be great :-D I'm on it too.

Not a huge amount to be honest, as all the info is in there that I can find. It just needs a good copy-edit to make sure it passes FAC criteria for that. Might have to check all the references have the i's dotted and the t's crossed. An update from adopt a user

Hi there Catalan! You may be wondering, what have I done to sound the alarm this time? Nothing. I'm messaging you in regards to the adopt-a-user program, which currently has a backlog of users wishing to be adopted. This doesn't make much sense, as we have a considerable list of users offer adoption, so there shouldn't be any backlog. I've begun to eliminate this backlog myself through a matching program, but I need your help to make it work. Of course, adoptees and adopters don't have to go through there, but I believe it helps eliminate the backlog because someone is actively matching pairs.

On the list of adopters, I have modified the middle column to say "Interests." It's easier working with other users that have similar interests, so if it's not too much to ask, could you add your interests in the middle column? For example, if I was interested in hurricanes, computers, business, and ... reptiles? I would place those in the middle column. Counter-vandalism and the like can also be included (maintenance should be used as the general term). The more interests, the better, since adoptees can learn more about you and choose the one they feel most comfortable working with. The information about when you're most active and other stuff can go into the "Notes" section to the right.

Finally, I've gone around and asked adoptees (and will in the future) to fill in a short survey so adopters can take the initiative and contact users they feel comfortable working with. We all know that most adoptees just place the adopt me template on their user page and leave it - so it's up to us to approach them and offer adoption. So, please take a look at the survey, adopt those that fit your interests, and maybe watchlist it so you can see the interests of adoptees and adopt one that fits your interests in the future.

Cover of the Ludwig von Mises's Institute new edition of Essai.

Richard Cantillon (1680s –1734) was an Irish economist and author of Essai Sur La Nature Du Commerce En Général (Essay on the Nature of Trade in General), a book considered by William Stanley Jevons to be the "cradle of political economy". Although little information exists on Cantillon's life, it is known that he became a successful banker and merchant at an early age. Essai remains Cantillon's only surviving contribution to economics. It was written around 1730 and circulated widely in manuscript form, but was not published until 1755. Despite having much influence on the early development of the physiocrat and classical schools of thought, Essai was largely forgotten until its rediscovery by Jevons in the late 19th century. During the late 1710s and early 1720s, Cantillon speculated in, and later helped fund, John Law's Mississippi Company, from which he acquired great wealth. Cantillon's entrepreneurial success, however, came at a cost to his debtors, who pursued him with lawsuits, criminal charges, and even murder plots until his death in 1734. (more...)

I saw your note about the sourcing. This was my original worry about the article (well, that and how to handle 1940s racial terminology, which can be awkward) - I really wasn't sure if it would pass or not given the limited sourcing. The main problem is that there's not much else out there - they mostly get passing mentions in general histories of the early-1945 fighting, and those mentions are usually either trivial (they merely confirm what Lee covers in more detail) or personal recollections so riddled with errors as to be of very dubious validity. I have noticed several unsourced claims in the Ballyheigue article that relate to Richard Cantillon or the Cantillon family more generally. The Lince was a Spanish main battle tank development program during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was intended to replace the Spanish Army's M47 and M48 Patton tanks which it received through a military assistance program between 1954 and 1975. The Lince was also intended to complement the AMX-30E tanks manufactured for the Army during the 1970s. Focusing on mobility and firepower, the program put secondary priority on protection and aimed for a tank lighter and faster than its competitors. The vehicle's size was also restricted by the Spanish railroad and highway network. To achieve a sufficient level of firepower and protection, given the size requirements, the Lince was to use Rheinmetall's 120 mm L/44 tank-gun and German composite armor from the Leopard 2A4. The Spanish government decided to upgrade its AMX-30Es in the late 1980s, which distracted attention from the program. The Lince was eventually canceled in 1990 when Spain adopted a large number of North American M60 Patton tanks retired from Europe in accordance with the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.
