I'm a DYK n00b. The Peter Wilmshurst one I porposed is sitting near the end of the 30 days and I only just became aware that I had not brought a shrubbery, which I have now fixed. Is it too late, do you know? I think it is worth putting him on the front page for his fifteen minutes of fame, the man has taken more than one for the team and is a bit of a legend. 2015 GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup

Greetings, all!

We would like to announce the start of the 2nd GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Our inaugural competition, which ran from October 2014 to April 2015, was such a resounding success that we'd like to do it again. Currently, there are over 500 GANs ready to be reviewed; competitors in the previous GA Cup reviewed about 570 GAs, so we can again make a huge impact in helping editors improve articles in Wikipedia and decrease the traditionally long queue at GAN.

The 2nd GA Cup will begin on July 1, 2015. As last time, five rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on November 28, 2015), but this may change based on participant numbers. The judges learned a lot during the 1st GA Cup which exposed weaknesses in its system. Using both the feedback from last year's participants and the weaknesses discovered, we've revised the scoring system to make it more fair. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same.

We also are introducing three new judges: 3family6, Jaguar and MrWooHoo. So in total, there will be six judges. We hope this will allow the competition to run more smoothly.

Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on July 15, 2015. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges.

Cheers from 3family6, Dom497, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo, and TheQ Editor.

Serpens and Eta Carinae are both very near FAC at this point. I have a good three months before college starts up again, so how would you feel about a collaboration on Messier 87? Cytherea (pornographic actress)

Since you closed the request to move Cytherea (pornographic actress) to Cytherea (actress) as "not moved", shouldn't you have left the article at Cytherea (pornographic actress), since that was its state prior to the request? —BarrelProof (talk) 17:52, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

oops, didn't notice. fixed now. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:35, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
How the hell a 8 against 3 could result in a no consensus?? Ok, it's not a vote, but majority of editors rejected the " misleading" argument, both here and in other relevant and cited discussions, and as long as a 3:1 ratio was not enough I wonder... how much consensus do you expected for making a move? High smell of supervote here.... Cavarrone 20:47, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Look, one goes on arguments not numbers. Both sides have valid points - it's obviously a smouldering issue and needs an RfC on the whole issue. The question should be phrased, "Should a person who has appeared only in pornographic films be termed, "Jane Doe (actress)" or "Jane Doe (pornographic actress)" - hold it over a month, and get wide input and be done with it once and for all. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:51, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
NB:Cavarrone, I really don't care what the title is. Just do the RfC and highlight it somewhere and then there can be a guideline and the bickering can stop. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:53, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Both having valid points is not a reason or a justification for ignoring the consensus, especially if such a consensus was not exactly "surprising" but on the contrary it was consistently supported from a number of extensive moving discussions which in the last months had already settled the question. If there is about a 3:1 ratio which support a valid point over the other valid point and which support the moving, the page should be moved, period. Your request for a RfC is not a justification for your failure to correctly read the consensus in the discussion. Cavarrone 21:07, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Cavarrone you have two choices then. Either stuff around with a Move Review or do an RfC, but doing these articles singly is a waste of resources and hot air. Tell you what, I'll set up the RfC myself in a few hours once I've done a few RL chores. Then it can be big hugs all round. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:32, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Frigatebird FAC

Hi, Casliber - you are certainly deserving of all kinds of accolades for the great work you do on WP. I saw your post on bird project and did a quick review of the article. Nicely done. I have some copy edit suggestions that will tighten the lead and make it a bit more lucid and flowing. I didn't go into the body of the article in detail yet - but before I attempted any copy editing, I wanted to consult with you first. Atsme📞📧 15:34, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Atsme, when I review an article at FAC, I write this, so it'd be hypocritical of me not to have the same done at any FAC I am involved in improving, so go for it. I'll have a look afterwards. Thanks for taking a look! Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:12, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate it, but before I make any changes, please take a peak at it first - User:Atsme/sandbox - I moved text around, and shortened the lead a bit. I think a 3rd paragraph regarding human utilization/interaction may be appropriate as applicable to what's already in the body. I also changed a couple of section titles for conformity. You can comment on my sandbox. It's fun to collaborate with experienced editors who have long since grown a protective layer of critic retardant skin. ;-) --Atsme📞📧 23:17, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, alot of that looks smoother and I think is a net positive - the more I think about it, I think gettiing their ranging across all subtropical oceans should come in sentence 1 - ("Frigatebirds (also known as Fregatidae) are a family of pelagic and aerial seabirds found across the world's subtropical oceans" or something similar). So sling it in and we can play with it. Regarding headers - I always take "etymology" to be more reductionistic in meaning mere meaning (i.e. dicdef) and taxonomy is more global, combining classification (and by definition evolution), systematics and naming. Maybe like this. hang on...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:22, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The evolutionary relationships appear to be a topic of debate. I went through something similar when I was working on some of the ancestral fishes and collaborated with a microbiologist or maybe he was a geneticist, can't remember, but we finally got it worked out despite the various clades and scientific debate over whether they maintained most of their primitive morphological characters or were highly derived therefore belonging to a different group (Teleosts). Anyway, I see similarities here so you might want to give the following a read [3]. My brain is frigated so I'm about to turn off the iPad and the lights. --Atsme📞📧 03:34, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The taxonomic material written on that page is vague, misleading and outdated. I've never seen any studies connecting them with Charadriiformes, and a couple of things linking with procellariiformes (one of which I've covered, the other was to do with parasites I think) but the link is tenuous. For the past 20 years it's been increasingly clear that pelicans (and shoebill) are not closely related to the group containing frigatebirds, cormorants, darters and gannets/boobies -but the name needed changing as pelicans gave their name to the group. Any webpage that still lists frigatebirds as pelecaniformes is way outdated. (look at the age of the references that page uses) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 05:17, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Whew! Good to know. Atsme📞📧 11:38, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Atsme: That lead sure if fiddly. I keep wanting to tinker with it. I meant that a line on the worlds oceans but then should follow description/species etc. Sigh. No am worried that it jumps a bit about too much. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:13, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take it back to my sandbox and see how you like it after I tighten it up here and there. Atsme📞📧 12:31, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sure - go for it. I generally edit low-traffic articles, so real time editing is fine too. I very rarely use the sandbox. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 12:46, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you like it. I tried to hold true to the order you wanted, leaving the evolutionary references in the 3rd para. I made the text a bit more "engaging". As you know, it's not easy to make encyclopedic engaging. My biggest challenge hit me about 15 yrs ago when I was writing a script for a PBS documentary about endangered unionids. Imagine trying to make a half-hour program about clams interesting when the tendency is to clam-up. *lol* --Atsme📞📧 18:39, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Atsme: see talk page - I like para 3, but I think para 1 I'll rejig back more to a safe/default way of most bird articles. To make it not jump around in content means rejigging the material one of two ways and behaviour before description comes over weird...no biggie...it's an interesting one to get my head around....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:52, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just a small observation, perhaps the skeletal foot image could be flipped, so it doesn't interfere so much vertically with the text and headings? FunkMonk (talk) 08:08, 14 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - would you please explain your "no consensus" close here? I see above that you have said that "one goes on arguments not numbers" in evaluating an RM discussion. Here, the three !opposers stated that the real-life baron used an umlaut. Which is true. But the numbers were named after the fictional baron, which has one "h" and does not have an umlaut. As with Munchausen syndrome. Thus the argument put forward by the !opposers is not relevant. Would you reconsider your close in that light? Thanks. Dohn joe (talk) 14:55, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ankylosaurus etymology

Hi, I and LittleJerry are working on expanding Ankylosaurus for FAC, and I noticed some issues with the etymology that was already in the article. Explanation of the genus name can be found on this dead site[4], but is it a reliable source (in the sense that it would be accepted during FAC)? Also, none of the sources I found give a meaning for the species name, so that is still uncited. So I was wondering whether you know of any workarounds to cite this? Dictionaries? The article already became a GA in 2006, so we can't GAN nominate it, though it probably wouldn't have passed today in its current form. FunkMonk (talk) 05:06, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I could do the bare meaning but not the rest - one dino book must cover it, worth chasing....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 15:34, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So if I just do away with "referring to the great width of the animal's body" about the species name, I guess it should be ok with that citation you added? FunkMonk (talk) 15:37, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, mine is only a dictionary so it just does the name. I recommend leaving it for teh moment - let's look through some online dino history to see if we can find the other bits, but remove if we can't. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 15:39, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, will probably take at least a month before we have it ready for FAC anyway (waiting for copy edit alone). FunkMonk (talk) 15:52, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question for you and your stalkers

Cas, I've been debating whether to become an admin and am seeking the opinion of various people to decide if I should take a run at it. (yes, 70,000+ edits in, now I'm thinking about it...finally) My question is if I have been around so long that I now have too much baggage and have pissed off too many of the wrong people. I think that by holding myself to a strict code of recusal and avoiding using the mop anywhere my neutrality would legitimately be questioned (i.e. horse articles, mostly), I'd do a pretty good job; I've been there, done that, seem about every kind of drama, and when I'm not involved, I generally can stay pretty cool (sometimes I can even stay cool when I am involved, it kind of depends). I know myself pretty well. But, and it's a big question, how much would experience and some of the battle scars I've acquired be used against me? I'd like to think that the people I've had the nastiest tangles with turned out to be individuals who earned long-term blocks over the long haul, and the rest I've managed to figure out a way to work with on-wiki, but I may be mistaken. I'm asking you (and those who watchlist your page) for your candid views because I figure that you've seen me around wiki a lot, you've helped me out of a couple jams and we've chatted about assorted stuff. And it will give me a sense of what I'm up against. Montanabw(talk) 04:30, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm, try and think of the most acrimonious situations folks could find and link here. I've been aware of some but may not have the full picture. Maybe try and make up with some folks you're antagonistic with? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:34, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Where to start? (ha) The most recent is this one. Frankly, most of the people I've spatted with over the years that are still around I mostly get along with well enough or we have agreed to disagree and work mostly in our own areas. Frankly, I'm posting the general question because some people I have no interest in making up with, they can bring it... the question is if they would top the 30%. Also, you will be getting mail in just a moment. Montanabw(talk) 06:42, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Did you know nominations/List of accolades received by Fashion (film)

I just wanted to know, why the rest of the things were dropped from the hook? Its ridiculous. She won several awrds? Is it an interesting hook? I request you to re-add those lines. I dont know why these casualties happens with me.—Prashant 02:54, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No idea....will take a look. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:04, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah! Please do look. And, tweak that up. Even the hook mentioned was the original one.. You need to edit in the additions and the main page. This could have attracted so many hits. Thanks.—Prashant 05:18, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Prashant, look at Template:Did_you_know_nominations/List_of_accolades_received_by_Fashion_(film) and follow up with the people who discussed it there. They'd be the ones to convince. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:21, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Casliber. Is there any chance you could semi-protect the article Attacks on secularists in Bangladesh for 24 hours? The page is going to the mainpage on DYK in a few hours, and an IP has turned up who is adding clearly inadequately sourced content in a technically clueless manner. frigatebird references

I notice some references in the frigatebird article have periods after the author initials and some do not. I intend to make them consistent but I wanted to check with you as to which style you prefer. I don't have a strong preference - I've used both styles (hopefully not in the same article) - but I prefer not to have spaces between the initials. Aa77zz (talk) 17:10, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

GA Cup

WikiProject Good Articles's 2015 GA Cup - June 2015

Welcome to the GA Cup! The competition is about to begin! Before you all start reviewing nominations and reassessments we want to make sure you understand the following:

  • This is a friendly competition so we don't want any cheating/breaking of the rules. However, if you do believe someone is going against the rules, notify the judges. All the rules are listed here.
  • If you are a new editor or new to reviewing Good article nominations, it is imperative that you read the 4 essays/guides listed under FAQ #4. If you do not understand something, ask a judge for clarification ASAP!
  • The competition is not entirely about who can review the most nominations. Per the "Scoring" page, there is different criteria in which you can earn more points. Theoretically, you could review 10 nominations and have 80 points but another user could have reviewed 5 nominations and have 100 points. Yes, we want you to review as many nominations as you can as this will greatly increase the number of points you earn, but you must also keep in mind that every single review will be looked over by a judge. If we find that you are "rubber-stamping" (in other words, the review is not complete but you still passed/failed the article) you may be disqualified without warning. The same applies with reassessments. If you just say that the article should be delisted or kept with no explanation, points will not be awarded.
  • Remember, to submit Good article reviews and reassessments on your submissions page (Some of you have not created your submissions page yet. Only reviews/reassessments submitted on your submissions page can earn points. If you participated in the 2014-2015 GA Cup, you still need to re-create your submissions page.). Detailed instructions on how to submit reviews and reassessments can be found under the "Submissions" page. Ask a judge if you need clarification.

Also, rather than creating a long list on what to remember, make sure you have read the "Scoring", "Submissions", and "FAQ" pages.

Now some of you are probably wondering how on earth the rounds will work.

The rounds will work in a similar fashion as the previous competition, with the exception of the first round. Round 1 will have everyone compete in one big pool. Depending on the final number of participants after sign-ups close, a to-be-determined number of participants will move on (highest scorers will move on) to Round 2. We guarantee that the top 15 will move on (this number may change), so make sure you aim for those top positions! Moving on to Round 2, participants will be split into pools. The pools will be determined by a computer program that places participants by random. More details regarding Round 2 will be sent out at the end of Round 1.

It is important to note that the GA Cup will run on UTC time, so make sure you know what time that is for where you live! On that note, the GA Cup will start on July 1 at 0:00:01 UTC; Round 1 will end on July 29 at 23:59:59 UTC; Round 2 will commence on August 1 at 0:00:01 UTC. All reviews must be started after or on the start time of the round. If you qualify for Round 2 but do not complete a review before the end of Round 1, the review can be carried over to Round 2; however that review will not count for Round 1. Prior to the start of the the second round, participants who qualify to move on will be notified.

Finally, if you know anyone else that might be interesting in participating, let them know! Sign-ups close on July 15 so there is still plenty of time to join in on the action!

If you have any further questions, contact one of the judges or leave a message here.

After sign-ups close, check the Pools page as we will post the exact number of participants that will move on to the next round. Because this number will be determined past the halfway mark of Round 1, we encourage you to aim to be in the top 15 as the top 15 at the end of the round are guaranteed to move on.

Cheers from 3family6, Dom497, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar and MrWooHoo.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

If not, I can get it scanned. - Caribbean~H.Q. 10:02, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, hadn't thought of that. Let me think on it. Sounds like alot of work.....thanks for offering. Since those days, I've managed to get good access to fulltexts of most journals thanks to being made a conjoint lecturer at university :) Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 10:31, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, wish I had that kind of access. My method is crude by comparison, I keep a web of acquaintances that let me know of any book that comes their way. It's not as efficient, but I come across stuff that is so obscure that you wouldn't believe it. Most don't serve much use when it comes to Wikipedia, but I am aware that at least half a dozen of them are not found in the UPR or the General Archives, which is pretty cool. Anything relevant to Caribbean biodiversity is there, so just ping me if you have a relevant project in mind. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:48, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok will do - conversely, if you need a fulltext of something ping me. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 23:59, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Emu War

I am working on the article Emu and am puzzled by the so-called Emu War which seems to have taken place in October/November 1932. The Wikipedia article Emu War states "wheat prices continued to fall, and by October 1932 matters were becoming intense, with the farmers preparing to harvest the season's crop ". My question then is, what time of year is wheat harvested in Western Australia? In Britain it would nowadays be July/August or perhaps September for ancient varieties, and I would have expecting it to be February or March in Australia. Are you able to enlighten me? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:34, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Off the top of my head I don't know but my guess would be like yours. i.e. late summer. I don't have any books specifically on wheat so my next move finding out would be the same as yours - i.e. googling it....Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:14, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Following your suggestion, I find that wheat is grown as a winter crop in Western Australia. In 2014, for example, havesting was expected to start in late September after a warm, dry winter. So that explains it. Thanks. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:00, 20 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FA review of Ketogenic diet

I believe I have followed the guidelines for requesting a FA review. I have done this on the talk page of the article. The major editor/contributor initially wrote that he would address my concerns regarding the references in the article. No progress has been done to address my concerns and I, with no malice, want to proceed with the process of a review of its FA status. The major problems are: the references are quite outdated. I have posted other references and left this information on the talk page. I would have edited and inserted the updated references myself but I do not feel as if I have the expertise or familiarity with the topic to do so or I would have fixed it myself. Another significant problem is that the references do not meet the requirements of WP:MEDRS. The references in medical articles should be academic journal review articles, systematic review articles, governmental websites and policies and medical textbooks. I could find none of these as sources (there might one and I might have missed it). My review is not perfect but in good faith, I am optimistic that with the right sources, this article can retain its FA status. Best Regards,

I thought this bit from the image description was interesting: "The young stars in the R Coronae Australis complex are similar in mass to the Sun and do not emit enough ultraviolet light to ionise a substantial fraction of the surrounding hydrogen. This means that the cloud does not glow with the characteristic red colour seen in many star-forming regions." - Dank (push to talk) 19:19, 30 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
