vampires and fungi

re: vampires, I did have an interest in the language, but it was for an unrelated project, and so have little cultural knowledge. If you can find translations or facsimiles of Sahagún's work, you mght have better luck, at least for the Cihuāteteoh ("standardised "classical orthography).

re: Fungi. I always recommend not putting systematic images: takes too much room. Place a few of them on the left instead. Maybe try to combine more fields to make the table takes less room? (see e.g. List of mammals of Korea and List of mammals of Canada. Also, given thelikely size of the list, you'll want to use actual headers instead of table divisions à la List of Anuran families. Variegated Fairy-wren

Hey. I'm currently reviewing Variegated Fairy-wren (printed copy, should reply tonight or tomorrow EST) and have a quick question. Is it a British thing to spell words like localised and recognised with the letter s instead of z? Notability of Witch's hat

AHS is actually real; it's a neurological disorder after strokes (You can't tell very well from the article as it's kinda a mess). Which gameshow? Don't forget to look up on mushrooms in history too! Hmm, what kind of room can't you enter? A mushroom! :) Hahahaha! I'll let you use that joke on your gameshow. Aren't I generous? ;) Anyway, I dunno about potato, it's just as big a task as vampire; but maize seems pretty cool. However, I like the appeal of pork - it's a complete mees just like vampire, so it's kinda a clean slate. I'll understand if you're Jewish though why you don't want to edit it... Fairy Wrens

It's better with it, as Circeus suggests. Perhaps you're being sensitive to the closeness of "it" and "its", which is an issue if we're being very fusssy about elegant language. May I suggest although in formal language (Encarta Dictionary's idea, and I agree). And I wonder whether you need to mark it grammatically with the addition of "does"; probably not. There's another issue that may not matter: "although", strickly speaking, is not logical, since we've been told that the diet is mainly insects (we're expecting something else already). So maybe:

  • "The Superb Fairy-wren is mainly insectivorous, although it supplements its diet with seeds. or
  • "The Superb Fairy-wren's mainly insectivorous diet is supplemented with seeds. (A bit lumpy, although logical.)

Gorgosaurus

Hi Cas!

After all your hard work on Gorgosaurus in July, I've decided to nominate it for GA. I added one more reference, and I think it's ready to go. I'm still keen on the idea of a Featured Topic, and with Daspletosaurus, Albertosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus already FAs, and Tarbosaurus only needing minor work IMO, we could be well on our way to a FT. Sorry to interrupt, but I'll be quite interested to see how you'd handle Tyrannosauridae. Wikipedia's developed a good model for what an animal FA should look like at the species level. But I've been working on rhinos, and I have to say that I don't think replicating the species article structure at the family level would necessarily work. As far as I can tell, from looking through the other FAs, it will be rather untrod ground. A family structure should more or less work at superfamily level. But again at Order, I'm not really sure how you'd approach it. Anyways... I'll be watching. --JayHenry 07:43, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, I still have one question about the Polidori text: "...Polidori had earlier composed an enigmatic fragmentary story concerning the mysterious fate of an aristocrat named Augustus Darvell whilst journeying in the Orient - as his contribution to the famous ghost story competition at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva in 1816, between him, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley and Polidori..." I fail to see how the story of the aristocrat is relevant to the vampire article? It doesn't mention that it has any vampiric themes and it seems to only be there for the purpose of showing that Polidori took part in a ghost story competition with the writers mentioned. Polio FAC

I'm a little nervous about the prospect of creating a trivia section (if we're not careful). If there are up to 20 million polio survivors, then the fact that many are notable isn't particularly surprising. Were you thinking of naming a few select polio survivors here? There are potential problems here. Which would you pick and how would you stop "drive-by" additions. Most folk wouldn't know Sutherland had polio and how many people under 35 have heard of Dury? I agree with your sentiments, and hope List of polio survivors achieves this in an encyclopaedic way (i.e., giving the facts, without emotive language). Can you elaborate on your ideas? I tried to do something similar at lion, see what you think. It has to have structure. Ian Dury was pretty notorious when Spasticus Austisticus came out - and he was very obviously crippled by his polio. There won't be many like him and Sutherland where the illness and incapacity were so overt though. As far as the future, you have to just keep watching FAs...I've been involved with a lot and the best thing is to be diplomatic and divert to subarticles. It is 1AM here and I need to sleep- I will try to discuss with others later. Wrt fiction, closer parallels might be the "Cultural references" part of Tourette syndrome and its daughter article. If you can find the material, I'm sure you'll do a good job. Wrt people, perhaps I haven't explained my viewpoint. A bit of history... There was a section on "Famous polio survivors" at the end of the article. See this version. It was sourced largely to one geocities homepage. I removed it and created List of polio survivors to replace it. That list was then expanded in a joint effort with the other two polio guys, and is now featured. I hope it does "show human triumph thru adversity and normalising disability". I would find it difficult to select just a few from that large list. People from different age groups and countries will each have their own opinion on who are notable polio survivors. Taking into account Colin's concerns about "drive-by" additions and "trivia creep" (which I share, based on my experience with sections like this in other disease articles) how about this (or a better worded version) tacked on to the end of the History section?

Many notable individuals have survived polio and often credit the prolonged immobility and residual paralysis associated with polio as a driving force in their lives and careers. (Unclear how to source this though)
During the polio epidemics of the 1950s the disease was very well publicized, with extensive media coverage of any scientific advancements that might lead to a cure. Thus, the scientists working on polio became some of the most famous of the century. Fifteen scientists and two laymen who made important contributions to the knowledge and treatment of poliomyelitis are honored by the Polio Hall of Fame at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation in Warm Springs, Georgia, USA.

Re: movies (if any) and one or two of most famous examples in para 1. Fears of engaging in clinical reductionism aside, I am still not convinced it is a good idea to list any specific names here. My choices for "most famous" would certainly be different than your picks. (For example I had never heard of Ian Dury before the "List". Note that: I am under 35 and an American, which apparently explains everything.) I think it would be much more appropriate to just provide a link to the "List".

As for movies, I find mostly documentaries on IMDB (which I do not feel constitutes a RS by the way) and maybe A Very Long Engagement but I am not sure it was made clear that she had Polio specifically.
