Having read more into your pages on blocking, I believe I now understand that this IP address has been automatically blocked by your system. I suspect that Tiscali use this for a (large?)number of broadband dial-up users. I have tried the anti-AOL trick of using the secure link to Wikipedia and, surprisingly, it worked, but it is SO SLOW as to be unusable. We need a better solution

Full stops in abbreviations

Hi CS46, just noticed you've been taking the full stop out of the "Hon" from Rt Hon. A full stop is actually needed there as Hon is a truncation – that is, it doesn't end with the same letter as the word being abbreviated – whereas "Rt" does. Compare Mr, Dr, Sgt, Ltd and the like to Co., Inc., feat., etc. In the latter three abbreviations, the rest of the word is cut off so a full stop is needed, but the former four are contractions with letters taken out of the middle. Thanks for this JonC. I understand what you say and don't wish to get into a long discussion over this since this is only a matter of style and not substance.

I draw your attention to MOS:#Abbreviations which, under 'Periods (full stops) and spaces', states "Abbreviations formed by truncation (Hon. for Honorable), compression (cmte. for committee), or contraction (Dr. for Doctor) may or may not be closed with a period" and although "A period is more usual in North American usage", "no period is commonly preferred in British and other usage".

This last is evidenced by the main reference for Template:David Cameron cabinet 1 vertical, namely http://www.number10.gov.uk/news/topstorynews/2010/05/her-majestys-government-49840 where you will see that the British government omit the periods.

I therefore would respectfully submit that, in an article which is quintessentially British, I am correct.

I don't, however, intent to re-revert the 2 articles—I'll leave that to you if you agree, or not, otherwise. I will, however, put this discussion on the relevant talk page for others' enlightenment.
