NJ Devils, Today's FA Request

I checked on the today's featured article request and noticed you asked if another date should be requested. How about June 30th, the anniversary of the day the team was renamed the New Jersey Devils? Ofcourse I figured it'd be best to bring it up with you first since you're the one that first requested it. Also, incase you're gonna reply on my talk page, I'll be copying this to my talk as well...so look for it...but feel free to respond here as I will be checking here as well. New Era?

Anaheim Ducks infobox colors

Please note that the infobox uses orange because that is the main team color (and not bronze, as many believe). Their website's dominant color is orange, the team's merchandise uses orange as the main color, and even in the playoffs the Ducks are encouraging fans to wear orange (and handing out orange towels). -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 08:07, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

Ahh, I see. Sorry about that, I wasn't aware. That's a little odd that they wouldn't have more orange in their logo if it's one of their main colors. Perhaps it's mostly because it is cheaper/easier to make orange merchandise than it is to make bronze? Anyway, like I said, sorry. Thanks for informing me about it, though. Actually, the lack of orange on the jerseys and such is one of the main gripes from us Ducks fans. The orange isn't because of cost purposes, but rather to symbolize Orange County, where Anaheim is located. :) -→Buchanan-Hermit™/?! 20:21, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

There is orange on the jerseys -- just a thin line though. We don't mind the look in general but think there should be a bigger emphasis on the orange. Oh yea, I see the orange lines now...don't know how I ever missed it. That would be cool if they actually listened to the fans. The problem with rumors, though...they usually aren't true....not saying it won't happen, but it's just a rumor. Just like there's a rumor that Scott Gomez (one of the New Jersey Devils top players) will return to the Devils next season and accept less money for returning...which is obvious that it's not true. If the Devil's could clear some cap room it might work, but they probably won't be able to...Martin Brodeur and Patrik Elias get paid A LOT, so..yea...oh well. Kinda reminds me of the rumor that Scott Niedermayer was gonna come back to the Devils after only playing a single season with the Ducks (obviously this was when it was only his first season on the Ducks), but that never happened. Hope you guys (as in the Ducks) get the cup, by the way. I missed the first two games so I don't know how close the playing was even though the Ducks are leading the series, but good luck anyway. As a Devils fan, double standards is something I am unfortunately aware of. The Devils get penalties that weren't penalties called on them while the other team can get away with a lot (don't get me wrong, the Devils get away with stuff too...but not nearly as much). If Pronger was more well-known, I'm sure that either he wouldn't have gotten suspended or Neil would have gotten suspended as well. It's not fair, but it happens. I'm just waiting now to see if Alfredsson's deliberate shot towards a Duck (I forgot who, they said it was at Scott Niedermayer but it looked like he wasn't in the same direction as the shot so I figured they made a mistake) is gonna have any backlash from the NHL or not. I wouldn't be surprised either way, the Senators could always just make the argument that he was taking a shot and it went off to the side, even if it's apparent that he was shooting it at Scotty. IIHF Rules

I saw your question on the IIHF talk page. Basically, you're right, Canada and the US don't have to follow the IIHF rules. More specifically, games, leagues, and tournaments sanctioned by Hockey Canada and USA Hockey don't follow the IIHF rules but their own respective rules. However when their national teams are involved in international tournaments they are bound by IIHF rules. Generally speaking, there are only a few differences, with ice size being the biggest difference ,international rinks being about 15 feet wider. They also have no touch icing and got rid of two line offsides earlier as well. Most other rule differences are probably minor. I also think that Hockey Canada also doesn't apply a common set of rules for their jr. leagues. I think icing rules and two-line offsides were different for the different CHL leagues, but I'm not 100% sure on that. USA hockey might be more consistent. As for Europe, I haven't a clue whether all the leagues, jr. and sr., actually do follow the IIHL rulebook. While it sounds probable, I think it would make rule changes hard to pass. Hahahaha. Well, part of it is coincidence, part isn't. Devils related stuff, we're both Devils fans so that's coincidental I'm assuming. Your highschool and college I got from your userpage (look higher up on my talk page, we've talked very briefly before and I see you from time to time on hockey-related articles so I decided to look at your userpage). Christopher Titus is a total coincidence though, I decided to look at his article after I saw one of his stand-up shows on Comedy Central (for about the 50th time). I think I saw the same Titus special and it stuck in my mind because I was so bored. Eurosia Fabris is one of the first articles I created...yeh I think it's on my userpage. Did you know I'm translating the Devils article into Italian? It's been this gigantic pain, but it's really helping my Italian. I've got like three levels of filtration from my original translation to what you see on that page, so it's all native-level, even if I'm not at that point. The tough thing is that I'm almost always at a loss for how to translate concepts that don't exist in Italian like general manager, conference finals, best-of-seven, the trap, etc. It's very hard, but soon you'll see a little FA star next to the Italian link for the Devils which is a lot better than what is currently there. We probably did see the same one, and yea that's on your page so that's probably where I got it from. I've had a bit of a weird almost stalkerish kinda thing with this guy, though. He's edited some of my sub-pages, ones that there are no links to anywhere at all. He even has a link to my userpage on his, as well as links to other peoples userpages and some articles...I have no idea who this guy is. And about the Devils article, oh man...that's A LOT of translating. At least it's helping your Italian, though. The Italian article definitely needed updating, half of the edits on it are bot edits. For general manager, best-of-seven, etc. if you can't think of a way to translate them, maybe you should just leave it in English and put quotes around it or something? Maybe even make little articles for best-of-seven and conference finals, maybe by themselves it wouldn't mean anything in Italian, but I'm sure there's a way to at least explain it in a whole article. Having had some experience with people like that and coming to wrong conclusions, he almost seems autistic. Strangely enough, I've encountered several autistic people online who have similar mannerisms and mean well but just don't have the slightest abilities when it comes to being social. For things like "general manager" I actually have kept the title the same and I intend to translate general manager (ice hockey) into Italian the next chance I get. Unfortunately the language doesn't lend itself well to hockey as the geographic epicenter of the language lies further south than most European languages. I feel like a pioneer without a compass, but I'll trudge through. Honestly I just want to be able to tell other users how much more important the Devils are to all Italians because the Devils have an FA on the itwiki and the Sabres haven't even got an article at all! I think most things I do are done out of spite and bitterness X-D. Hmmmm...well I hope he's not autistic..I'd feel kinda bad if he was (I'm assuming it's a male). At first I kinda just figured it was some vandal that I warned a lot that was trying to get some kicks out of it or something, but then I just had no idea what was going on. And I don't know much about soccer, but I'm sure you could use it to help explain certain things since Soccer seems to be the most popular sport in nearly every country (excluding North America). Hahahaha, that would be kinda cool. Still proud of everyone that contributed to the English New Jersey Devils article for getting it to featured status (unfortunately I'm not one of them, I came here afterwards). And I was actually thinking of re-doing the list of New Jersey Devils players, I want to get that to Featured-list status. It's unfortunate, however, that a person hasn't yet come along who takes really good, high-quality pictures of Devils players in-game. That might be the icing on the cake for that kind of article. I've already started on it, I have the actual chart itself done...now just to insert all the stats. As well as separate the skaters from the goalies, it's going to be very similar (more like exactly like unless I/we can think of some extra things to put in) List of Colorado Avalanche players. The pictures may be the only thing that keeps it from becoming FL. :-/ Some of the Devils players do have pictures of them while on the Devils, a majority of them have them while on another team...so it might not be too bad. About the pics, if they were/are career-Devils, it'll be pretty hard to find pics of them...but if they've played on any other team, the chances of having pictures of them increases by about 90% for some reason...ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit, but you know what I mean. Sorry, forgot to tell you, I read it then finished goalies and kept going. Anyway, I've finished splitting up the goalies and skaters (although some names I haven't confirmed what position they play yet, but that'll be an easy fix later when one of us checks their articles..I was just trying to get through all the ones here first which I don't think they've added the 06-07 players to that yet for some reason.) I finished the nationalities, seasons, and putting the surname-first for all the goalies, but nothing else yet. And for the skaters all I've done was all their positions. Feel free to edit whatever you wanna edit, I need to take a needed nap (I got no sleep last night, result of wikipedia/hot house/cats/dogs...ya know) so don't worry about any edit conflicts. There's a references at the bottom for seasons and stats, but they only add up the regular season stats. The playoff stats we'll have to get the sums of by ourselves, I guess. Stats

Though they're not yet updated for this season, I'm finding good stats at NHL.com. You can find the Brodeur page that I got the stats from (and then added the hockey db numbers for 07) here. I'm 99.99% sure of the numbers and, unfortunately, I think it's how I'll have to do them for all the goalies. I've come up with a bit of an issue, though. I honestly don't see the point of including a "points" category for goalies when something like "shutouts" makes much, much more sense. A goalie point (with the exception of a goal) is usually a second assist and really not that influential in the goal, nor does it affect how we think of goalies in posterity. Alright I finished the goalies section. I just want to clarify a few things I did and a few things I used so we can be coordinated when you start the skaters section.
  1. Be sure to use the en dash for date ranges so that it looks like 1995–2000 instead of 1995-2000.
  2. I scoured the living shit out of hockeygoalies.org which, obviously, won't help you much. I calculated all the stats myself and double-checked the big ones like Terreri and Brodeur to be sure. I'm 100% sure they are all correct. One thing this site also allowed me to do is find out precisely what date ranges a goalie played for the Devils because they have a log of almost all games played after about 1985 or so. To make things more clear, if a goalie played one game in 1986, I only left the year 1986. I couldn't do this for all goalies, but the ones I didn't do it for were from the 82-85 range, so honestly I don't think it's that big of a deal. For Brodeur and Clemmensen I used the hockeydb for regular season and playoffs 2006-07 and calculated that into the old stats.
  3. I calculated GAA as: (GA x 60) / Mins
  4. I calculated Sv. Pct. as: (Shots - Goals) / Shots
  5. I had no problems getting all the statistics for every goalie.
  6. Though I knew what backup goalie was on the cup for 1995 (Terreri) and 2003 (Schwab), I couldn't remember who was the backup in 2000, nor did the playoff stats do much to help me since Brodeur played every minute of every game. I had to find this picture to verify that it was, in fact, Chris Terreri. That got me thinking that you should use this page to figure out who you should highlight in the skaters and who you shouldn't. Then we should reference that link at the end.
  7. Be sure to use this dash for the N/A sections in the playoffs if they never played in the playoffs for the Devils: —
  8. Let me know how you want to break down the skaters section if at all you want to break it down. That is the large chunk of it and the goalie section is much smaller. The unfortunate thing is this: I'm leaving for California on Wednesday. This normally wouldn't be that big of a deal, but I'm driving, so my online time will be limited from Wednesday to ~Sunday or so.
  9. For the "lead sections" (whatever they're called..you know the top of the column that says GP W SO GAA etc.) note what I did to make it a grey background and bold. Instead of a | you just put a ! in the appropriate places. Consider also making another row with those things every 20 or so rows so that people don't have to scroll all the way up again to see what each column means. I'll let you figure that out ;-D.
Anyway, just send me a message whenever you wake up and let me know how you want to do it. I'll have "limited" internet from Saturday to Wednesday (i.e. I'll be getting stoned a lot with my friend in Boston), but I'll spend time on it when you want me to. I'm removing players like Bobby Allen who have never actually played for the Devils. If you think this is unreasonable, let me know, but I think it fits the article title. Yes, shutouts are definitely a better stat to show rather than points. And ok, so endash for the years and emdash for the players that didn't get their name on the cup while on the Devils. Goalie stats are completely done, correct? And yes, that will help a lot with highlighting the skaters, thanks. Breakdown how? Split the chart or do you mean I do some then you do some and so on? And alright, I'll do that, I doubt I'll have much trouble figuring it out (if my HTML experience will help at all, that is). I'll do 20 skaters between each....top thing..so it's consistent. And yea, if they haven't played a game with the Devils then they shouldn't be in there, I just hadn't gotten a chance to go through and check for all of them. Hahahaha, don't worry about wikipedia while you're in Boston, dude...that'd be a total buzz-kill. Have fun. And also don't worry about it on your way to California. Ok it's done. Just a few things I've noticed...hockeydb seems to be updated with everyone's stats. If you find someone who's only been on the Devils, like Gionta or Gomez, you can just grab the bottom line of stats for NHL total...I've made sure that line doesn't include AHL or college just to be safe. Just keep going here and typing in a player's name into the top. They have everyone and it's been working like a charm all night for me. Also keep this page open to be sure you're getting all the new guys in there. Just mark down where the current Devils are and when you get to the spot, if he's not there, put him in and bold him up. This is why I like the "nationality" heading instead of POB. For everyone on my list born in Czechoslovakia that is now a Czech citizen, I put {{flagicon|Czech Republic}}...for those who are now Slovakians, I put {{flagicon|Slovakia}}. Incidentally, are you sure Steve Thomas isn't Canadian? His wiki article is a bit ambiguous about what his nationality is, though I'm sure he speaks with a Canadian accent. It's really not a big deal, but for one of my guys who was Canadian and born in the UK, I put the Canadian flag. I think if we take out the pics, we need to put three more pieces of information into the goalie section: Ls, Ts, OTLs. Someone in the FLC mentioned it, but it was sort of glazed over. It is a noteworthy thing to include. It's not hard to find, especially since the goalie list is so short. Also, we should add the Devils template to the bottom of the page. What do you think? Well, I was over looking it quickly and noticed that it had "1990-1998" or something like that for Ken Daneyko, so maybe we should go over the seasons again. And I don't know about Steve Thomas, on hockeyDB they said he was born in the UK so I just went by that, but his article on Wikipedia made it seem like he was raised in Canada..I'm not sure which to put..should we go with Canadian? Yea, we should add the L's, T's, and OTL's, but wouldn't OTL's go better in the time section? Even though you can find things that may include them pre-lockout...most people didn't care about them them until post-lockout...so maybe we should just do it like that..this way it'd match the player articles. Sorry, what do you mean by "time section?" Did you mean "tie" or am I missing something :-D. I think we can include an OTL thing, now I think about it, just for the regular season. It's just one extra column. All in all it'll be pushing the regular season cover to 8 columns and the playoffs to 6 which is only gaining three. I don't know if putting OTLs in ties is the solution, but neither is putting it in Ls. We should keep it separate, I think. JHMM13 21:32, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
Hahahaha, yes, I meant tie. Yea, let's just give it it's own column, then. I forgot we weren't listing season-by-seasons for a second, haha. Make sure to add the note that ties are only before the lockout since they can't happen anymore. Just to let you know, I'm leaving at 6 and I don't know when I'll be back on, it'll probably end up being like 11 at the earliest. Remargin. The reason I don't think we can put OTLs in Ts is because there was a transition period when you could still tie and there was the OTL...remember when they switched over to 4-on-4 to incite scoring and it did nothing? Unfortunately for the stat keepers (us), the NHL rule makers are a bunch of clusterfucking morons. I think we all know the trapezoid was put in to hurt the Devils and Martin Brodeur...blech. Anyway...scrounge up the information about that stuff when you can this weekend. I'll be on and off line from here on out, so I can no longer really help out. Let me know if you need anything specific, though, and I'll be sure to do it! Also let me know when you're ready to put it up for FLC. It's about 90% of the way there, imho. Alright, well, I think this'll be my last question for now since it's mostly done and I don't know a lot about wikitables, but I figured out HTML by playing around with it..I'll just do the same thing with wikitables. I think it should be !GP!!W!!L!!T!!OTL!!GAA!!SV% for regular season and the same without T and OTL for playoffs. Put a note in the key about how OTL denotes an overtime loss or a shootout loss...also note how ties are no longer possible. Anyway...good luck and nice job! JHMM13 21:54, 8 June 2007 (UTC)
