Navigation Boxes for NNAA

Hi, I'm contacting you because I see you have made edits to Los Alamos High School. That page formerly featured some navigation boxes for the New Mexico Activities Association allowing people to navigate which schools competed with each other. These templates are now threatened. Please make your voice heard regarding the NNAA Navigation box issue: [1]. They have already deleted the Nav box for all of 3A and 4A but these decisions can be reversed. However, your support is needed. Greg Comlish (talk) 05:22, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh mayoral candidates

I want to establish some articles about Pittsburgh people in the mayor's race, which I believe currently only involves Carmen Robinson (officially) and Patrick Dowd (semi-officially). Is any information on their previously-deleted pages worth undeleting?

I have some other references, but for notability starters:

Thanks! sirmob (talk) 14:10, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aah, wait, I see this, so that's where the former page is apparently forming sirmob (talk) 14:34, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Undeleted Patrick Dowd since it seems like a good starting point. It also seems that with a few references the userfied article about Carmen L. Robinson would be appropriate for mainspace. When you're ready, if it won't let you move, lemme know and I can do it. — brighterorange (talk) 04:26, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Whoohoo. It's unorphaned and everything, I'll see about finding some more references about Carmen Robinson and I'll add those sirmob (talk) 01:50, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:STALKER screenshot.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:STALKER screenshot.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Punctuation script

Hi, I use your script quite regularly and appreciate you making it, however I was wondering if you might be able to fix a possible error. The main reason I use it is for ndash changes to ranges, however it seems to often miss some and I have no idea why. Do you have any ideas. Here is an example edit with the script. It found loads but still misses a significant number. I doesn't seem to be particular combinations either because there are 1–0 it succesfully converts and some it leaves as 1-0. Thanks, Rambo's Revenge (talk) 13:22, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That is weird indeed. I'll have to look more carefully. (Possibly if those are pasted from some other source they are not actual hyphen characters?) At one point it was looking for only pairs A-B where A is less than B, but I think I removed that and like you say it is not happening here. Possibly it will find these if you click the punctuation tab again after the first one, since sometimes the fact that it found something nearby (or encasing it, like in the case of ref fixes) prevents it from finding a change, the first time through. Other notes: I personally tend to not use the en dash personally for scores (10-1) because they are not ranges. Is it the accepted style to use en dash here (I don't have a lot of experience in sports articles)? Also: I don't think you meant to change the year ranges in the interwiki links, at least not without moving the articles on the destination wikis. — brighterorange (talk) 12:46, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. Yes you are right about the interwikis. It was an accident because I wanted to show an edit where I hadn't modified the default script run. But they are hyphens because I pasted a hyphen over one of them and there wasn't a chnage in the diff. They are also correct per WP:MOSDASH for scores though "As a substitute for some uses of (...) to, (...) 4–3 win in the opening game". Rambo's Revenge (talk) 21:42, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I actually installed the script myself, and think I managed the deed myself. I would be very grateful if you could check that I did it right, though!! --Slp1 (talk) 19:19, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, looks good! Only thing to be careful of is that it can sometimes do the wrong thing and break a link or something like that. So you gotta look at all the changes it's proposing and turn off the counter-productive ones. — brighterorange (talk) 01:56, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. It's a great little tool. Now if I could only see the differences between these different dashes! --Slp1 (talk) 12:28, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation tool link in toolbox

Could you please let us configure the Punctuation script so that it shows in the toolbox rather than as a tab? Gary King (talk) 23:28, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to do that, but feel free to edit it however you like... — brighterorange (talk) 04:22, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Replacing the addPunctuation function with the following should do it:
function addPunctuation() {
   // need to see later if user has done any editing...
   punctuationPageOriginalSummary = document.editform.wpSummary.value;

	if (typeof(punctuationToolbox) != 'undefined')
		addPortletLink('p-tb', 'javascript:doPunctuation()', 'Punctuation', 't-punctuation', 'Punctuation', '', '');
	else
		addTab("javascript:doPunctuation()", "punctuation", "ca-punctuation", "Punctuation", "");

   akeytt();
};

How does one cite a chant? Should MLA, APA, Turabian, or Chicago citation be used? Please provide an exemplar citation of a chant for the entire world to follow since you obviously know so much about proper citations. While you are at it, you should delete every word about Rob Schremp that is not cited on Wikipedia; better yet, you should make it you goal to delete every single piece of citation-less information on Wikipedia no matter how evident or true the information is. --Jtsports92 (talk) 01:19, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation script

Hi Brighterorange, is there a way to make the script compatible with Vector? Or, is it ready now and is there something I have to do to make it work? Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 02:40, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. I think it should be pretty easy to port it over, which I'll try to find some time to do. I bet it's just a matter of figuring out how to make tabs appear at the top (or otherwise insert buttons to click) and then changing the ids of the text and comment fields, which is what it rewrites to get the job done. — brighterorange (talk) 15:47, 3 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't use your script quite as much as I used to since I found User:GregU/dashes.js, but yours still comes in handy for other punctuation fixes, so it would be nice to have when the change comes. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 04:25, 6 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of GregU's script, something in your script seems to be messing up the former. Do you know what it is? Dabomb87 (talk) 20:25, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I was just about to ask the same thing about Vector. Awadewit (talk) 22:24, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A well-meaning editor changes most of the en- and emdashes to something else. Can you run your script to make sure they're accurate? Thanks. --Moni3 (talk) 12:59, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, done. There were no dash problems, but a few small other fixes. — brighterorange (talk) 02:22, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh event for Wikipedia's tenth anniversary

Hi! Since you're a member of WikiProject Pittsburgh, I wanted to invite you to the Wikipedia Tenth Anniversary celebrations we're having in Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 15. During the daytime, we're going to be having a photo contribution drive where anyone can bring in their digital photos or prints and Wikipedians will teach people how to upload them and add them to articles, and maybe introduction to Wikipedia workshops as well. Then in the evening, we'll have fun at the Carson City Saloon. There will be free Wikipedia t-shirts and other goodies, as well. See the Pittsburgh meetup page for more details. I hope to see you there!--ragesoss (talk) 14:38, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Script request

Hello BrighterOrange,

I'm not sure whether you'd arranged for the role of your script to be assumed by the RjwilmsiBot, but I couldn't find a means to request that bot to be run on an article. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could run your script against the Epsilon Eridani article because I'm hoping to take that through the FAC in a couple of weeks. Thank you!—RJH (talk) 15:48, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you could go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Pittsburgh/Members and move your name from inactive to the active or semi-active group (depending on your interest in Pittsburgh issue and overall activity) groups, this would be great. Hopefully in a near future you'll also receive our first newsletter with various information on what we have been doing, and what useful tools are available. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 19:56, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brighterorange, a few years ago you added a reference to this article, "Game Console Hacking". Do you have this book? I'm trying to determine the significance of the coverage. Google Books shows mentions on pages 37, 550 & 557[2], but there's no preview for page 506. Thanks for any help, Marasmusine (talk) 09:24, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I do have the book somewhere. I recall it has a section describing a bunch of emulators that are useful for homebrew development, so the coverage was probably about a half of a page. Anything specific you want to know? — brighterorange (talk) 03:16, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop at CMU (Aug 15)

Since you are one of the editors in the Category:Wikipedians by alma mater: Carnegie Mellon University, I'd like to invite you to the Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop that will take place at CMU on Aug 15 (this workshop is open to general public, and is a joint imitative of CMU and Pitt). There will be another workshop held at Pitt in the Fall as well. It will cover how to include Wikipedia in one's course (WP:SUP) and also how to become a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassadors. Pennsylvania has currently only one ambassador (myself) and it would be great if we could recruit at least several more. Ambassadors help course instructors, showing them how Wikipedia works, and interact with students. Many current ambassadors come from the body of students, faculty and university staff; it is a fun adventure, and adds to one resume/CV, to boot :) If it sounds interesting, feel free to ask me any questions, or to come to the workshop.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 20:08, 9 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Manhunter2sf.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Manhunter2sf.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/LizaMoon until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:38, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: Used your media file

This is a courtesy note. One of your media files is featured in a new commercial eBook in Apple’s iBooks store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/dr.-kemps-kids-love-bugs/id497852225?mt=11

I’ve contributed images to Wikipedia for over seven years now (including several POTD and Featured Images) and I designed the WikiSpecies logo. I respect your work here and the CC-BY-SA license we all labor under.

I know commercializing Wikipedia work is tricky and so I’ve taken great pains to follow your CC-BY-SA license requirements. I also plan to donate 10% of my proceeds to the Wikimedia Foundation directly. This is the very first self-published e-book created with Apple’s new tools and sold in the store.

I’ve given your file a credit line in the “Image and Video Credits” section starting at page 24 as required here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License

This compilation features many of the finest Wikipedia media files in their exact form and not as derivative works. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbatim_copying_under_the_GFDL#Making_verbatim_copies_of_images

If I did alter your work -- such as cutting out an insect part or adding a video sound track -- I shared a Share Alike version of the new media in a DRM-free format and listed the web address in the credits section.

Thank you very much for uploading your work to Wikipedia and releasing it for the world to use in enriching educational formats.

In six months the book has earned $293 and so I made a donation this morning to Wikipedia Foundation for $29.30. The book is now a featured selection in iTunes > Books > Textbooks > Science & Nature. Thanks again! jk (talk) 13:40, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

Dear Brighterorange,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:23, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just a note.

It was Guys like you that I enjoyed University so much. The intelligence and creativity amazed me. Maybe I'm strange, I like to read legal briefs from the courts. Especially when the court explains its decision. Quite fascinating, the rules are not too unlike science and nature.

   My career was repairing CT scanners. These scanners would not have existed in the 70s if it hadn't have been for

a mathematician named Radon. The Radon transform uses the FFT to transform data taken in sperical coordinates to Cartesian coordinates for display. Why did Radon (who lived before computers) develop Tomography? No reason. Just for fun. My point is that this creativity is so exciting because it has such big potential and good. I have seen first hand in person the magic of being able to save peoples lives that previously had no chance. Simply because Mr. Radon decided to goof around and figure out some math. Of course it was cheap computers and another mathematician to develop the FFT. I am glad I found your website and SigBovik, I see the parallels.

   In business the pragmatism demands superficial thinking to maximize profit, survival. So it became rare to have

any interactions with people that have thoughts deeper than "Get er done". Its not painful, but its like living in a foreign country. You can never quite understand all the jokes and sentiments of a native born person. Thank God for YouTube and the internet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.65.71.21 (talk) 15:08, 11 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brighterorange! As a Steward I'm involved in the upcoming unification of all accounts organized by the Wikimedia Foundation (see m:Single User Login finalisation announcement). By looking at your account, I realized that you don't have a global account yet. In order to secure your name, I recommend you to create such account on your own by submitting your password on Special:MergeAccount and unifying your local accounts. I like your work on Carnegie and whatnot, but I found a misconception in one of your works. Even though YOLO has become a worn out title, I would like to correct what you typed about the term being coined first by Drake. In reality, Mitch Lutcher sang about YOLO in his song You Only Live Once, produced in May 2011 before Drake's song the Motto came out in October that same year. Drake is credited with turning a phrase from something more into something less, if you read Silence's lyrics, they are definitely deeper than Drake's. YOLO was first made popular in the Hardcore world than the mainstream world, and Lutcher and Sucicide Silence should be given credit for the phrase. Thank you. You can Wikipedia both songs and see the point I'm making, the motto may have to be investigated more than You Only Live Once, though. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex3711 (talkcontribs) 20:05, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Brighterorange. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Brighterorange.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:27, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Street running trains.

Hello Brighterorange. You once started the Street running (train) article, and I'm a big fan of Street running trains. That is why I would like to discuss: I can't find an official definition anywhere of what an Street running train is or what requirements a street (infrastructure) or train must meet. Do you have a source for that?? The term street (running) train or something like that is unknown on the FRA site.

So I sent an email to an FRA safety specialist. He didn't know the term either❗(!). That's why I sent him a link about Amtrak in Oakland. Then did he understand. He then sent links to extensive regulations, and nothing about street running trains is mentioned either. He also confirmed that there are no special regulations (in the USA). What do you think about that? Can I include this in the article? Regards, Straatspoor (talk) 07:16, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ha, it was 18 years ago :) My impression is that I created this at street running as a redirect to road running, as in the sport. Street running train makes sense to me but I think that evolution was due to others. So, sorry, I don't have any references for the term. Please do improve the article though. Perhaps there is a better name to be found in the regulations! — brighterorange (talk) 12:53, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
