Disappointed Newbie

To the kind person who posted a message on my talk page which was subsequently deleted......

Many thanks for your support, I appreciate it. I have always been the kind of person who gained personal satisfaction by helping others out. I have been lucky to benefit from others investing their knowledge wisdom and experience in me and I feel morally obliged to pay them back by passing on my own knowledge to others. One of the greatest things that has happened to me is a complete stranger coming up and saying, "You don't know me but you once spent hours helping me solve a problem, can I buy you a drink?" I can go to my grave happy knowing that there are such people out there.

On the flip side I have been around the block enough times to know that there are people in the world who get their kicks from being nasty and superior to strangers, normally in order to compensate for their own inadequacies. I guess the only good thing about such people is if they didn't exist there would be a shortage of traffic wardens.

I joined Wikipedia the other day because I thought that it would be useful to contribute with local knowledge about the terrible events that unfolded close to where I live. It hasn't been a pleasant experience and not something I will be rushing to do again. I have no objection to constructive criticism or editing of my work, that is the whole point of Wikipedia, but it is another thing people getting their kicks just by being a self-important jerk. I still believe Wikipedia is one of the greatest things developed by mankind, but, "behind the curtain" it obviously isn't the nicest of places.

Wikipedia will continue to exist without my contributions, that is for sure. I am just sad to find out that it isn’t the wonderful place that it could be. Bodging and bluffing (talk) 12:56, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"there are people in the world who get their kicks from being nasty and superior to strangers" You mean by calling them "self opinionated individuals" or a "self-important jerk"?
