Teahouse

Hi Lane! So glad you are answering questions at the Teahouse! We do have specific methods and procedures when interacting on the Q&A page that makes us more unique than other help spaces. This includes simple methods such as saying "Hi!" when an editor asks a question (everyone likes to be welcomed when they visit a new place, right?) and keeping things as least jargony and linky as possible (i.e linking to policies and procedures). You might find some value in the Host tips page, which explains why we do what we do :) You also might have interest in becoming a Teahouse host! While we aren't tracking invites and requiring hourly volunteerism (that language will be updated soon!) anymore, that page will give you a good overview. Regardless, we're happy you are participating and I look forward to it further in any capacity! Sarah (talk) 17:29, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

I am interested in learning more about the process but now that I think about it, the original reason I never learned more was because I could not commit five hours a week. I want to learn more because I am making referrals to the place and I want to know what will happen. Are hosts the only people who are supposed to answer questions?
Why did you bring up using minimal jargon and links? I answered two questions in the past days - could you critique my answers?
Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:38, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi BR. We tend to ping anyone who isn't a Host to let them know about protocol, so please don't think I was focusing specifically on you :) Most folks who come by to participate at the Teahouse aren't familiar with our procedures and what makes us different and unique. A few gentle criticisms of your responses..with the Create new article comment, we generally, first, greet those who ask questions and we also don't just link to procedures and policies. I understand that it's opening a can of worms to explain how to start an article, but, making responses as warm as possible is a key point to the way the Teahouse works. With the uploading a picture question, you can see a good comparison between your response and Ben's response. He acknowledges the question asker, talks to them about the policy and procedures in easy to understand language, and provides them with some tools in the answer that the new editor can use. Also, as mentioned in the Host tips page, we do leave talk back templates for the new editors as most people don't know about watchlists. Writ actually created some userscripts that might come in handy - including a talkback reminder. When all else fails - kill them with kindness and I use the mantra: if my grandmother can't understand it (or at least, my aunt) then I'm not doing it right :) Thank you again for all you do! Sarah (talk) 18:44, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Hmm... thanks, that does clarify a lot. I look forward to meeting you at Wikimania. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:12, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

The Coral Calcium Misnomer

Bluerasberry: I appreciate your suggestions, unfortunately, since my involvement in the Vietnam "war", I am very selective concerning what "wars" I will participate in. It appears Wikipedia, the "editor-Yobol" or others contributing thereto are more concerned with protocol than facts. Bob Barefoot and his ridiculous claims about the misnomer "coral calcium" are history. No one really cares anymore. What people want are the facts and the facts are simple. Coral calcium is not typically offered for sale in the United States. What is offered are coral minerals that contain coral calcium carbonate and 73 other macro, trace and unknown use minerals. Since I am one of the leading experts on coral minerals having written a best selling book; The Miracle Elements: Fossilized Stony Coral Minerals (500,000 copies sold to date), and have been a health researcher and educator for over 40 years, I thought I could write an entry for Wikipedia with a little more scientific information concerning the subject of coral minerals. Apparently, Kobol feels what has been written stands and my post needs to be removed. So be it. Sincerely and Respectfully, Dr. James Chappell — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr JEC (talkcontribs) 16:57, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

You are completely correct that very often people on this site are more concerned with protocol than fact. One of the strictest rules is providing citations of a certain sort to everything added to Wikipedia, and I and many others have recognized that it is discouraging to good editors like you when you are compelled to learn a rule set before editing. I regret that you feel discouraged from participating and it seems like you are the kind of editor which this project really needs, but I also have to acknowledge that your treatment from Yobol would not have been unique to him and is representative of the way many new editors get treated. If it is any consolation to you, what happened to you is according to the Wikipedia guidelines and rule set, and that rule set is unfriendly to people who do not understand it and not easy to understand or learn. I am sorry that I have no better solution to this problem than to say that I am working to make it much easier and much friendly for people like you to volunteer productively should you want to do so, and that you be properly appreciated should you give your time and expertise. The Tea Leaf - Issue Four

Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

Thank you and congratulations to all of the community members who participated - and continue to participate!

  • What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
  • ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
  • Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
  • 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
  • Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
  • New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
  • Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
  • New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
  • Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
  • Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
  • Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
  • Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.
  • Want to know how you can lend a hand at the Teahouse? Become a host! Learn more about what makes the Teahouse different than other help spaces on Wikipedia and see how you can help new editors by visiting here.
  • Say hello to the new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, as being welcomed by experienced editors is really encouraging to new Wikipedians.

Still need reviews for the Wikipedia Education Program research project

Hey, Lane! Since you made me change my picture, I'll try to enlist you for the following task:

If you have some time to review the quality of some articles, we're using the results for a really important research project that will help shape the future of the US/Canada Education Program. For a few projects, we're on a pretty tight timeline and are really eager to have many more of these articles reviewed over the next week. However, we think it's most useful to come from experienced Wikipedia editors.

I have gone through each class to prioritize for various projects, and everyone on the Education team at the Wikimedia Foundation would be extremely grateful if you could participate by reviewing a few articles ('pre' and 'post' versions). If we can rally a lot of editors to review one or two articles each day, we will be able to make the most use of this research for our tight timeline. As many of our Ambassadors have requested it, we are really eager to find out which classes have been successful according to the Wikipedian standard.

If you can spare some time, please check out these priority articles and give it a go. Even 1 or 2 a day would help immensely! JMathewson (WMF) (talk) 02:38, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

I did not contact them. In fact, while the article was published two years ago, I only found out that last week. SYSS Mouse (talk) 04:44, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

This is referring to this article in the Signpost. I am not sure what I think should be done in response, but something ought to happen. Blue Rasberry (talk) 10:21, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Nuts!

I had a hamster when I was younger. Great pet! have you ever tried giving him some unsalted mixed in-the-shell nuts? My little guy loved them. He could finish off an almond in a minute flat, but the Brazil nuts were the best - he would happily gnaw on that tough shell for hours before emerging victorious.

But that wasn't why I came here. I have been trying to educate a certain someone about Wikipedia policy, but I feel as if I have gone as far as I can. I really like your suggestion of moving it back to the talk page. If the move doesn't happen in a day or so, I am going to close the discussion on the noticeboard. Anyway, thanks! --Guy Macon (talk) 05:36, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for writing and managing that noticeboard. Your proposal is how things should be. That person did come back to the talk page. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:27, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Health professions student in portland looking to connect to other local wikifolks

Hi,

I am interested in getting more involved in wikipedia. I am hoping that there is a group in Portland I can connect with.

Also, I am currently in DC for a policy internship, and will be here during the International AIDS conference, though I will probably not be in attendance. If you will be attending please feel free to let me know, and perhaps we can meet up; we seem to have a lot of interests in common.

It was nice meeting you Saturday, although I can't travel to DC. I'm quite interested in seeing Consumer Reports if at all possible given my obligations (in spite of all my credentials, I live in a shelter until I can get a job for at least four weeks and rent a place without losing my storage unit, unless I can get a place big enough to move out of the storage unit, and you have to go wherever they send tyou to be in compliance and not get kicked out/have your lock cut). --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 18:45, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Article deletion

Hamster fans of the world, Unite! Thanks for the Coffee - and good to see the new page I started on Iain King survived through the deletion process. Is it possible that there is another debate like the one there has just been again? Is there a way to save the discussion on Iain King, so that, if there is another debate like that in the future, the old debate can simply be reffered to? Felixthehamster (talk) 08:11, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes. The discussion is already archived on the talk page of that article. You can see the discussion here. It still may be proposed for deletion again, but I suspect with all the sources provided that it would pass deletion review. Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:56, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

July 2012 Study of authors of health-related Wikipedia pages

Dear Author/Bluerasberry

My name is Nuša Farič and I am a Health Psychology MSc student at the University College London (UCL). I am currently running a quantitative study entitled Who edits health-related Wikipedia pages and why? I am interested in the editorial experience of people who edit health-related Wikipedia pages. I am interested to learn more about the authors of health-related pages on Wikipedia and what motivations they have for doing so. I am currently contacting the authors of randomly selected articles and I noticed that someone at this address edited an article on Rectal Examination. I would like to ask you a few questions about you and your experience of editing the above mentioned article and or other health-related articles. If you would like more information about the project, please visit my user page (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Hydra_Rain) and if interested, please reply via my talk page or e-mail me on nusa.faric.11@ucl.ac.uk. Also, others interested in the study may contact me! If I do not hear back from you I will not contact this account again. Thank you very much in advance. Hydra Rain (talk) 19:07, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Userpages

To try to better understand your perspective on this, how does my userpage compare? - jc37 21:54, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I would unequivocally give you a pass. You state that you are an admin, you list some WikiProjects you support, you direct visitors to an editor assistance program and show some interest in sharing information about editing pages and citing sources. Your userpage is great. Did my policy page help you predict that I would say that? If not, then what made you unsure? Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:25, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
I wasn't so much "predicting" as trying to understand. To me, it seems (as written) somewhat vague and subjective, so I was trying to better understand. - jc37 22:02, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
... can you do me next? Blurpeace 03:56, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
For this version, fail! You say that users can contact you, but it is intimidating when people get an invitation to contact another person for every reason instead of some particular reasons. Say one thing about yourself that differentiates you from other Wikipedians. In business, this is called "branding" and people prefer branded providers to nameless providers. The image on your userpage seems to indicate that you like nineteenth century French pastoral art. Say so, then people will know that you like to talk about that kind of art. You have a merge userbox - do you get excited about doing merges? Make it clearer that you want people to collaborate with you on page merges! The problem with your userpage now is that it is a dead end. A person can go to that userpage and not know what they should do next or do with you. Invite them to join you in saving French farming articles with merges. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:55, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I've given the final review. If there is anything else you find should be fixed or you can fix, then please do so. I'm going to a tour to Goa so, won't be able to pass the article till 10th August. Cheers, :) TheSpecialUser TSU 02:05, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

If you pass through Northern India then let me know and I can connect you with a people who would show you through regional HIV clinics, if you have any interest in that. Blue Rasberry (talk) 10:10, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
I'd love to but I'm staying at that place for only 8 days starting from tomorrow and not going out of it (South India). I may visit north India after 4 months and will contact you regarding that. I think that the place about which you are talking, is there in the article. TheSpecialUser TSU 11:17, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
There are clinics in many cities, but I know Mumbai, Delhi, Varanasi, Lucknow, and Kolkata. If you go to another city in the north then probably I can arrange for someone to greet you at a clinic if you like. Stay in touch. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:00, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
