ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Bjenks. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. RonBot (talk) 18:06, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I was just a messenger for this, so I'll just let the process do the work. Bjenks (talk) 01:27, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Discussion on scope of the "Sailing ship" article

You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:Sailing ship#Scope?, regarding what should be included in the article. You'll find a proposed outline, there. Cheers, HopsonRoad (talk) 12:36, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

As I hadn't previously heard the acronym wags, I did check the dictionary. In the context of the Studebaker article as used, 'wags' would be referring to "wives and girlfriends." It sounds a bit demeaning so I don't agree with the usage of 'wags', but it was valid during that era.

If wags is slang for something else, please specify exactly what in the Reason box.
Do not insult my intelligence by accusing me of failing to consulting a dictionary prior.
Christopher, Sheridan, OR (talk) 05:15, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

I intended no offence, so am sorry that you feel hurt. A dictionary reference is the logical way to explain the distinction between WAG and wag (which is NOT a slang word). My American Funk & Wagnalls gives: Wag n "A droll or humorous fellow; a wit; joker".
Collins online dictionary gives: [4. countable noun] A wag is someone who makes jokes. [humorous, or old-fashioned] He's a bit of a wag, his dad. "As one wag observed, the only people completely free from stress are the dead." Synonyms: joker, comic, wit, comedian.

Yes, there is also a millennial acronym "WAGs" meaning "wives and girlfriends", but this would not seem appropriate in the 1908 EMF context. What dictionary did you consult prior? Bjenks (talk) 15:23, 9 July 2019 (UTC)

You're defining 'wags' as "wives and girlfriends" as being a more recent (millennial) usage would appear to correlate with my search results. My modus operandi was to perform a broad search and view the most common results returned - "wives and girlfriends". It would seem that the sources I had used were so contaminated with the millennial definition as to mask the definition I had been looking for, the one you've stated above.

It is unclear whether I could have found the correct usage of the word through a shotgun approach. I apologize for the misunderstandings. It seems you knew what you were looking for, while I didn't. I still recommend defining questionable words in the Reason box when performing an Undo to avoid confusion. Likewise, I will reconsider my approach to better avoid millennial definitions.
