collapsed list

Hello! I hope you don't mind that I collapsed the web site list at the AfD for Bagio White. It;s important stuff, but overwhelming in the AfD. Also you forgot to sign.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 07:01, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Hi. A page you deleted as spam - Draft:Talos Holdings LLC - reappeared almost instantly. The new account which recreated it (almost word for word) has declared a COI. User:Hellometa - author of the deleted version - apparently has not. --kingboyk (talk) 21:56, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

Well, that's some result! I had my suspicions about Likeme123 but not enough evidence. It's always great to see a COI ring brought down. Thanks for filing the report. --kingboyk (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
@Kingboyk: :-) Not an issue, it was a lucky confluence of stories tying together, and one of which I am very much on the edge of seeing, though maybe I am just seeing a good lever point. In fact I think that I am seeing overlap of different schemes of paid vanity editing. If I was guessing for this lot, and @Bbb23: may be able to confirm or deny that this ring is operating out of the Asia, my guess would be Pakistan somewhere.

Some of these seem to be very much focusing on publications from IGI Global (igi-global.com) so it has some smell of a publisher involvement, or could just be fringe writers using that publisher to get their work out. I haven't been through enough edits though very much think that some tracking based on addition of Google Books url, with IGI Global as the publisher may have some value. (I have that itch.)billinghurst sDrewth 23:33, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

Comment: Another possible situation is that we are talking about a school or some common IP place. My thoughts on location are unchanged reflection on the subject matters.. Some of the account editing appears different, some of the tasks they were doing appear okay. I haven't look at the coincidental activity. There is some definite dodgy practices, and some attempts at creating non-notable articles, though against our criteria. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:59, 24 January 2020 (UTC)
@Kingboyk and Praxidicae: and I don't think that the abuse stops here, have a look at d:special:contributions/SirElliotSpootz then their claims on their user page. The same junk refs, and in multiple. I have flagged to d:WD:AN as it is just going to flourish without measures. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:32, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

Email from "Eliezersaidel"

Hi (G'day mate - I think you are from Down Under?)   I added a link in the Showbread entry pointing to our research center the Showbread Institute in Israel. We are the world's leading research institute into the biblical Showbread and I thought that anyone wanting to learn about the Showbread should know of our existence. I saw that you "reverted" my addition of the link. I really think the link adds value to the entry. There is no scholar in existence that knows more about the Showbread than me.   I really appreciate you taking this into consideration. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eliezersaidel (talkcontribs)

Hi. I prefer to conduct conversation about my onwiki acts, onwiki, not tucked away in email. Wikipedia is not a directory of links (see WP:DIRECTORY, and WP:External links). Your institute's existence has no relevance in an encyclopaedic sense, to the article, and that is the only measure to be applied. Typically a link to your institute would be on an article page for your institute.

Can I also point you to the following articles Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid editing and as a researcher, you would be well aware of the required declarations in published papers. If you are having issues navigating WP poitics, then Wikipedia:Teahouse is a great spot for newbies here.Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:22, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Response from "Eliezersaidel"

Hi

Thanks for the clarification. We have made an article page for the Showbread Institute.

There are a number of mistakes in the encyclopedic content on the Showbread page as well as a lot of missing info that we have documented as apart of our research. May I correct the errors and add the new findings that are lacking on the page and reference our Institute as the source, since it is we that uncovered them? Thanks Eliezersaidel (talk) 12:49, 30 January 2020 (UTC)Eliezer Meir Saidel

My expectation is that you edit according to the guidelines (some mentioned previously, others in your welcome message). Utilise citations from reliable sources. I am not wanting to stop you from editing in an area where you have expertise. Again the Teahouse is the best place to get support. I am just a crankypants. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:18, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
throw in @Eliezersaidel:billinghurst sDrewth 13:19, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Sorry - you are on point :) since we started with you and the conversation is already ongoing .... and I am a teatotaller and not ready to explore the depths of the "teahouse" :)

We are a reliable source. How do we establish our credentials as a reliable source with Wikipedia? The religious Rabbinic framework is not the same as the university/academic world. Our findings are presented to leading Rabbinic authorities who then endorse them (or not) and then we disseminate them via the institutes of higher learning (the Yeshiva framework) in a series of lectures (shiur). There are no journals that deal with this stuff - nobody has seriously studied it in the last 2000 years! All our credentials are verbal and by reputation ..... and in Hebrew!

So I imagine Wikipedia would want some written reference in a journal (that does not exist) or secular academic university study (that is not the framework for this material), so we are pretty much stuck?

Suggestions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eliezersaidel (talkcontribs) 13:34, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

palainco.com (from email)

Recently I have added links and text to pages of Wim Rietveld, Shigeaki Asahara, Lisa Johansson-Pape and Alexander Rodchenko.   The links were to articles on lighting design on a website which is named palainco.com.   You have eliminated all links and text. Would you be so kind as to explain why you have done this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seriously Light Minded (talkcontribs)

@Seriously Light Minded: Hi. I do not take email about onwiki matters, they should be discussed openly, not hidden away in email.

You crosswiki spammed links that would not be considered reliable sources. Is that sufficient? Now I see you at this account, then I think that I can add to my answer would be with editing somewhere on the spectrum of Wikipedia:Conflict of interest <=> Wikipedia:Paid editing and your editing in contravention of that guidance. If you are after support for a newbie, then please look to wikipedia:Teahouse or seek assistance at the wiki of your preferred language; each will have basically the same approach to conflict of interest editing. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:33, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

hijacking

sigh... I gave the hijacker a fairly stern warning but it's probably deserving of a block as i'm 100% sure this isn't their first account. Was filled to the brim with fake sources that I've added to the list (and could use blacklisting.) Praxidicae (talk) 12:02, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

woop woop. We just keep giving them to the CU, and following the leads. If we want/need something blacklisted, we should be moving that way, locally or globally. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:36, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

fyi

Don't have your email but thought you'd be interested in this. Praxidicae (talk) 23:09, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Isn't that interesting. I am sure that 1997kB has an interest too. No point in telling Commons, unless we have clear promotional additions. — billinghurst sDrewth 01:40, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Digital Journal

So, I mentioned this in our previous conversations, I've come across a few sources which are used in excess (so much so that COIBot can't effectively report) and Digital Journal was one of them. I don't know if it's ever been reputable but I can say with certainty it hasn't in the last decade and is user submitted garbage + PR garbage that is written to appear as genuine journalism. I think we'll need to have an RFC at least on en-wiki to really stop the use of it but I wanted to get your thoughts (or see if you wanted to propose it because I'm lazy. :P) Praxidicae (talk) 16:54, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

My husband's bio

Mr. Billinghurst. Please review my complaint to the WP:BLP Noticeboard: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Christopher_Michael_Langan

This will give you some needed background and the nature of the recent edits by 90.219.111.127 and why the bio should be returned to the point that this particular editor (who has a history with my husband) began his punitive edits. Per policy (and as as noted by scarpy and chihuahua on the talk page) the page should be protected in the state prior to the vandalism and the newly inserted edits scrutinized and concensus reached prior to protection. It's protected and that's great but it's been corrected in a borderline vandalized state. My husband is being portrayed as a racist and he is not. I will post my rebuttal to the points on the talk page within the next 24 or so hours and you all can decide. In the interest of taking a cautionary approach to the editing of a BLP, kindly revert to the neutral version by Johnnyyiu until consensus is achieved. DrL (talk) 20:41, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

@DrL: Where you are taking your concerns is the best place, not here on my talk page. I don't know enough about the subject matter to make any conclusions. Johnnyyiu's edits should not stand as neutral or authoritative as they obviously do not come without a finger in the pie either; we pick a place in the article's history to which we return, and rebuild from there. @Ponyo: This is one where you made some determinations. I just have removed problematic re-additions, and recovered the page to your status point. — billinghurst sDrewth 21:01, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure I've edited this article or taken any admin actions in reference to it. Perhaps you're thinking of GorillaWarfare? Or Drmies? Good company to be confused with, either way. -- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 21:10, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm planning to take a closer look at the article when I get home from work this evening. I do agree that BLPN is the best place to go, though. GorillaWarfare (talk) 21:29, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
Meh! When one is sneaking in a few minutes editing without checking histories … oopsie! Ponyo must have been another article where I was doing stuff around where you stepped in. Yogendra Sing - global lock?

Hi Billinghurst, I don't have a ton of experience dealing with cross-wiki abuse, but is this an appropriate case to request a global lock (since it's cross-wiki spam)? If so, would you mind making the request? I'm not autoconfirmed on meta so I can't edit SRG. creffett (talk) 02:19, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

@Creffett: Only on two wikis, and not blocked on either, so it isn't a case of a global lock— ie. local communities can manage. I have COIBot watching the domain m:User:COIBot/XWiki/lifemotos.com so things are okay. Always worth autoconfirm on meta, four edits setting up a global user page will get you there. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:56, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Antoine Hamilton

Dear administrator. I do not understand your correction on the article Antoine Hamilton. I am a novice in Wikipedia. Have I fallen foul of some rule in the MOS that forbids to crop a portrait? The full picture was shown further down and is still there. Now we have twice the same image. Besides, the caption of the picture in the Infobox still says "Detail from ...". I thought it was nice to have a ID-photo-like picture in the Infobox and then the full uncropped portrait below that might have a longer caption explaining the picture. I did this also in some other articles: Claude de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux, Sir George Hamilton, 1st Baronet, of Donalong, and James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault. With many thanks for your precious time. Johannes Schade (talk) 13:04, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Johannes Schade, this is nothing about administration, in my opinion it just looked like a rather poor aspect to produce compared with the full image, especially as the lede photograph, so I swapped it into place. And, I didn't look further down the article. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:38, 9 March 2020 (UTC)

Eroy1998 'Chilapata Forests' page

Hello Billinghurst, I don't understand why providing information about the wildlife of Chilapata is an advertisement. Also, if you have observed my contributions on 'Ramgua tree' on 'Tourism' section of the page, they are a rare breed of plants found in Chilapata, and it does require mention in the wikipedia page. You can just google it if you want to check. I fail to understand why this legit information seems to be an advertisement. Please do reconsider the matter after proper research. Eroy1998 (talk) 07:02, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Eroy1998

@Eroy1998: Please read wikipedia:reliable sources and understand what is proper research. Whereas your adding a tourist homestay site is not and never will be considered a reliable source at an encyclopaedia. Also tourism does not particularly belong at Wikipedia, it is more appropriate at Wikivoyage, who also reverted your link additions. While you are here, please also read paid editing and conflict of interest. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:51, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • I understand why my addition of a tourist homestay site is not being considered. But if you look closely into the matter, I cited that particular webpage, since I had used information from it. And, the reason I suggested you to do a little bit research is because, you'll not find information about Chilapata wildlife and Ramgua tree in such an organized and structured manner as in that tourist homestay webpage. Ofcourse information is there on the internet but in bits and pieces across various websites. So if I'm using information which is accurate (can be cross checked on google by anyone) from a particular website, am I not allowed to put it in citation? Thanks.Eroy1998 (talk) 10:11, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Eroy1998
@Eroy1998: Cite the reliable source. It doesn't matter whether reliable source is online or offline, simply cite it accurately.

The homestay website is not a reliable source, it does not get cited. FULLSTOP. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:16, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Okay then. I won't cite it. But can you explain why is a private resort listed on the 'References' section of [page]. The resort name is 'Humro Home Jhalong'. If you can explain it to me, I'll understand my fault better. Eroy1998 (talk) 10:35, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Eroy1998
@Eroy1998: Feel free to remove unreliable sources too. It is the task of everyone, and sometimes they are snuck in and missed. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:38, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
  • The page is Jhalong Is there any particular way to remove it. Cause, I'm new to it. Also, as a reason of removal, what technical terms shall I use? Eroy1998 (talk) 10:44, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Eroy1998

Suggestion

Thanks for renaming File:CEHPOU.png to c:File:(Cyclopentadienyl)zirconium-trichloride-3D-balls.png. I wonder if you could revise the new titles to include the old one, which is a code that identifies the dataset behind the image. For example File:(Cyclopentadienyl)zirconium-trichloride-CEHPOU.png. If you search my Wiki commons contributions, you will find hundreds of files with similarly cryptic names/codes. --Smokefoot (talk) 14:34, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

@Smokefoot: I simply undertook a rename request per c:Commons:File renaming criteria, there is no judgment on a person, or a name, just adding clarity. Hmm, names, I am not even certain why we have hyphens in the suggestion, wondering whether File:(Cyclopentadienyl)zirconium trichloride 3D-balls CEHPOU.png or something like that may be more suitable. Really open to suggestion for a natural name. Apologies for not thinking more holistically (my) last night. — billinghurst sDrewth 22:08, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Regarding user PlanetAakash and BenJulio87

Very suspicious of these 2 accounts, they have been gaming the system, there might be more sockpuppet accounts associated with it, which they use to write paid articles, the recent one is of Karan Jani. He didn't achieve any substantial prize note-worthy -> the one which he received worthy is Breakthrough Prize which was shared with 1012 contributors, here is the link -> https://breakthroughprize.org/News/32, and other awards are just local university awards which he got at his university he studied. He doesn't pass the Notability criteria for academics. Also, PlanetAakash has done paid articles before, you can check on his talk page, and BenJulio87(his supposedly uncle who is an Australian by birth(Indian Government Official lol!) created a Draft:Aakash Gautam(who is PlanetAakash). 2405:201:C808:F33:C5D4:D25F:2C97:E3B3 (talk) 11:15, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

Heyo, I'm a new page reviewer and I noticed that the page Ming Zhu on a non-notable person keeps being recreated with the same old content. Do not edit my meta talk page - As known, I am blocked by an admin for not being admins' slave

Do not try to suppress my voice, my talk page and even my userpage. If you want, do it on your own talk page accusing me whatever you want. Once my block ends I will put links of basis of each and every thing I exposed. If you can, do the same. or if you fail to do, just suppress me, restrict my ability to talk and do whatever you want :) Ruhubelent (talk) 13:22, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiBayer has blocked me, as always: without any basis, without pointing out anything I have allegedly breached. Just a baseless slander and a block :) That is the price a person pays on Wiki for not being a slave of admins. Wikiusers are supposed to never oppose any admin Ruhubelent (talk) 13:22, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

You are welcome to edit at Meta according to the local rules. That means not hijacking RFCs, and that means user pages that comply with local standards, that means editing in line with m:Meta:Civility and m:Meta:Scope. Your block at Meta says disruptive editing, and was nothing to do with me. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:29, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
first of all, no one said my block had something with you. Then, informing people that Meta is not a global arbitration committee is not to hijack something as you also informed me about that, meta:scope and meta:vicility does not have anything against informing others about your block. Anyway, stay away from my meta talk page, as that is to hijack. Ruhubelent (talk) 15:19, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Your attempts at information are disinformation and/or misrepresentation and/or cluelessness. There are people better informed and knowledgeable about this to explain the matter than you. Beyond that I will not discuss metawiki at my enWP user talk page. 23:39, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
Everything you did was just an abuse and nothing from me was disinformation - as in all of my RFC I talked with links whereas none of you ever pointed out anything. I am better informed than anyone else to assess it. Yes, no need to discuss it on other platforms. The only reason I opened it is to tell you to not harass my talk page --Ruhubelent (talk) 08:54, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
Ahem. 1) Your talk page at Meta is not blocked, so there was zero need to bring it to enWP; 2) The only person who thinks that you are hard done by is you, nobody else agrees with you and there are many, you have had zero support in any of your accusations; 3) you keep putting up spurious and/or inflammatory statements and expect them to be left unchallenged. No, it doesn't happen that way; this is a community and you are expected to act within community standards. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:12, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

You should know better

As an administrator. Go to WP:RSN or take the article to AFD. I have heard so many baloney reason- Spam, cookies, and not the original author. I should probably take you to ANI. BTW, yesterday I nominated for deletion two similar golf course articles created by the same editor. Check it out[1]....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 12:28, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

@WilliamJE: As an administrator I also know when a source is being spammed on wikis. I didn't come to the article through an interest in the article, I came through the spamming of the domain across the wiki. Now that I am back at my PC with my refs, please have a look at m:User:COIBot/LinkReports/top100golfcourses.com which is the edits of the account that I removed though you have reinstated. Now please tell me how a rating by a website which has a grandiose name but ratings by no named person with no rating criteria, by a site that has no evidence of expertise has any relevance to our encyclopaedia. Now please remove that domain from that article.

Take me to ANI, couldn't give a flying F. You did not come to me and ask in the first place, nor post on the talk page, you just reverted to a spam link of an unreliable source. Did you look at the editing history of the person, or the talk page of the editor? It doesn't seem so. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:55, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
