Help me questions

Within Template:Infobox Scientist it has a image field. I am trying to link to an image over in DE wikipedia, and I am stumped on the nomenclature. Robert Bentley Todd http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/b/bd/Robert_Bentley_Todd.PNG

You'll need to upload it to Wikimedia commons or to the English Wikipedia. What's the license on it? L'Aquatique[talk] 06:12, 3 August 2008 (UTC) I should have used this link http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bild:Robert_Bentley_Todd.PNG and I do not know the copyright, and my German is non-existent.

Looks like public domain. I'll deal with this, it'll just take a few moments... L'Aquatique[talk] 06:34, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Keedokee, here's the linky: Image:Robert Bentley Todd.PNG. :) L'Aquatique[talk] 06:49, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
Many thanks! Now to the text for the page :-) billinghurst (talk) 07:44, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Hey there

Noticed your disambig at Keith Miller, good stuff. It seems you have an interest in cricket; have you stumbled across the cricket WikiProject yet? It'd be great if you joined. --Dweller (talk) 15:49, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

Love my cricket, though I was actually "Disambig" on Kingston while watching the Olympicsbillinghurst (talk) 14:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Changes made by SmackBot

Hi, thanks for your message, SmackBot makes a number of changes that are available to all WP:AWB bots - in general these provide a number of non-controversial minor improvements.

The issue you raise is related to these, and has been already fixed by the AWB developers, but not yet released to all AWB users.
Regards, Rich Farmbrough, 15:31 30 August 2008 (GMT).

Places of closed railway stations in London

Dear Billinghurst,
You changed "Camden" to "London Borough of Camden" in "List of closed railway stations in London". Long ago the list had a column for Local Authority. It was removed as being unhelpful. A place-name "XXX" locates the former station more closely than "London Borough of XXX" would. In this case WP's apparent non-recognition of "Camden" except as an alternative name for "Camden Town" complicates matters and the station locations may need refining but for the time I've set both stations in Camden Town. The council website's ward map lacks detail. --SilasW (talk) 18:54, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

If the page is short of the desired info, it may be worth putting that extra definition to that page -- billinghurst (talk) 10:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Richmond disambig

Be careful of your disambiguation of the link to Richmond. I saw a lot of articles that should have gone to Richmond, Virginia that were sent to Richmond, London instead. Just FYI. --Midnightdreary (talk) 19:25, 6 September 2008 (UTC).

Sorry about that. Brain fade on Poe. :-/ -- billinghurst (talk) 10:44, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Prep school deletions

You have deleted the prep school wikilinks at Westbourne House School Penarth without explanation. Links are needed to disambiguate the major differences between US prep schools that prepare mature students for university and British prep schools that prepare younger children for Public School entry at age 13. I will replace the Wiki links unless you have an over riding reason for deletion. 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 15:52, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

There were multiple instances of the same link, there should still be one existing within the article. See Wikipedia:Overlink_crisis
Hmmm, I think you are slightly over emphasising just a tad. WP:MOS has always inferred that existance of more than one wikilink to the same destination within an article is OK as long as there are not too many wikilinks together in one sentence and as long as the same link is not repeated within a single paragraph. Even Wikipedia:Overlink_crisis's definition of overlinking seems to confirm this ie. "Excessive" is usually more than one link for the same term in a line or a short paragraph, since in this case one or more duplicate links will almost certainly then appear needlessly on the viewer's screen.
However, even if we decide to cut down to a single link within the article it should be the one in the lead that is retained, rather than one way down in the body of the text, wouldn't you agree? 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 16:14, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

AWB

Hi there. On Laura Ford (diff), while disambiguating, awb changed DEFAULTSORT and "Category:XXXX births" into {{Lifetime}}. At the same time {{Uncat}} was placed, despite that there was a category in place.

  1. Is the lifetime template preferred over manually categorizing?
  2. Is it possible to use the real template {{Uncategorized}} instead, because tools like HotCat doesn't recognize the redirect?

Samuel Rolles Driver

Hi. I'd just like reassurance about your recent edit to Samuel Rolles Driver, where you added Dictionary of National Biography to the list of his works, in a position which implied that he was a contributor. Is this what you mean, or is it just that he was the subject of an article? If the former, a few words of explanation would be nice, saying whose biography he was an expert on. If the latter, the reference needs to be moved. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 10:56, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi StG. He was a contributor to DNB see s:Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900/List of Contributors#D. To which article, at this point, I cannot tell as the project to transcribe DNB hasn't got that far yet. There is an author page where it will appear. I had been going to add that link to the page, however, there was already had a significant bibliography in place, so I left creating that. -- billinghurst (talk) 12:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
OK. Thanks very much for your reply. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 13:34, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

SmackBot

Here's what happens

  • That page had an uncat tag with no valid date parameter. That's what attracts SB to it.
  • The tag gets correctly dated, allowing it to be put into a hidden category.
  • Becasue it's a stub and uncategorized the tag gets changed to uncatstub.
  • The built in genreal fixes remove the stub as the articel is bigger than a stub.

It would be cool to remove the uncat stub altogether since the article is actually categorized.

Oberlin and Colorado

I noticed that as part of your current project to dab University of Colorado, you removed a link from the Oberlin College alumni page. I have subsequently added a properly disambiguated link. Wouldn't it have been better for you to do that in the first place? If that wasn't practical, I think it's better to leave a dab link (and let the user navigate manually) instead of having no link at all. Matchups 14:30, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

In many cases that is what is done. On that line, I believe that the link was of low value as it did not direct to value for the article, and hence falls under WP:CONTEXT. If you can fully disambiguate and you think it adds value to the article, that is okay. -- billinghurst (talk) 15:13, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

prod

OK what am I doing wrong? Abtract (talk) 07:36, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I have no idea. I didn't profess any knowledge in its use. It was doubling up and not right. I would suggest that you sandbox it. -- billinghurst (talk) 10:27, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks; I suggest you leave it alone when I replace it, since you profess no knowledge of the subject. Abtract (talk) 10:41, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
How about NOT. Expressing lack of expertise in a subject does not render one unable to have a valued opinion, nor the ability to recognise information with value. The question is whether it is a page for disambiguation, and if so how that is achieved. -- billinghurst (talk) 10:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Notability of Isabella Gordon

A tag has been placed on Isabella Gordon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 14:56, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

List of Wranglers

You've wikified a link to one person's name (Numa Hertog), but there's no article for that person. Is there any particular reason why you've done this? Mrh30 (talk) 17:20, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

He already has (red)links elsewhere Special:WhatLinksHere/Numa Edward Hartog so I standardised them; there is an article in the ODNB which means he meets the notability guideline. I am working on Wikisource:WikiProject_DNB and was sorting some information about the brothers, and fixing links. Once, they met the notability guideline, it seemed worthwhile standardising all the found links as I went, whether the article existed or not. -- billinghurst (talk) 22:35, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
