Peer review

I noticed on the peer review volunteers list that you were interest in molecular biology and computational biology. I recently did a major upgrade to the Genome-wide association study article. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, this article is exactly the kind I am keen to review. However, due to my current workload I am unable to dedicate the time it takes to do a thorough review. If the request is still open in a month's time hopefully I will be able to resume my normal editing and review this article. Hello, thanks for the reminder. I see the PR has been archived so I've made some comments on the talkpage. I made a few small edits to the article too. Re: Copyright violation

Thank you for the notice regarding the FANTOM wiki article. I did indeed copy a large section of text in November 2012 from a site on which I am the content manager (but perhaps not the copywriter holder). The second edit was an atempt to correct this by reverting to the version before I made these edits (~Jan 2012 version), I was unaware that this was also a large copy and paste from a website (one I don't manage myself). I can seek to get this content donated but, ultimately, perhaps it is a conflict of interest to edit this article myself? Do you have a suggestion? Hypercubed (talk) 01:31, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for getting in touch. As you realise, there is a potential COI issue, and generally it is strongly discouraged to write about an employer, but if you take a look at best practices for editors with conflicts of interest you'll see that it is possible as long as Wikipedia policies are followed; an important sentence from the COI policy is:

Do not write about [employers, associated institutions] unless you are certain that a neutral editor would agree that your edits improve Wikipedia.

In this case, adding a neutrally-worded history section with details of previous FANTOM releases doesn't breach this policy. My suggestion would be to rewrite or summarise the history section from FANTOM's website and then reference it as a source. It's not an ideal reference as it's not independent, but when I was making edits to the article I struggled to find a suitable third-party reliable source that contained this information. If you do choose to do this I can check it over for any COI issues after you've made your edits, though I suspect it won't be a problem. Jeb, I was too lazy to figure out how to format a link to a Wiki page for the RNAi that I added as an edit. Count you point me or tell me how to do it. Hunh!Just noticed the bottom of this page. Is <ref > </ref(remove space) > the way to do it? I needed to put in the space and (remove space) to keep the HTML from being recognized. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/name_of_article is the reference?

At the time I wrote the edit I quickly looked through Help and couldn't find the info. Maybe a "how to do a minor edit" page would be useful. Help wasn't.

Hi, I think I've fixed the link here. The code for a wikilink is [[Page title you're linking to|what you what the text to say]], so for the RNAi link I just linked to the page with [[RNA interference]] which makes: RNA interference, but another option would be to put [[RNA interference|RNAi]] to get RNAi. "Gender equality issues"

I have to say, your post at Buster's RfA really pissed me off. You obviously had no problem discussing gender equality issues ("the antiquated notion that women are the fairer sex, ect."). It's fairly ridiculous to start a discussion about gender equality issues on a page that you feel isn't the place to be discussing gender equality issues. In the context of this RfA and someone interfacing with new users I felt the banner was inappropriate and said so, I neither expect nor require the agreement of all other participants—people from different parts of the world and with different upbringings, inevitably with a spectrum of values regarding topics like gender equality. So my !vote wasn't a discussion-opener to bring everyone to my point of view, just a specific banner-related quarrel which is long resolved. Jebus989✰ 07:28, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Jebus989. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Just a thanks

I am interested in genetics and ancestry, and the probability of getting pancreatic (actually, of the digestive system) cancer, which I know you're not studying. But I saw your name and thought we might be related, as I am a big fan of Jebus, too. I especially liked his airplane experience.

I believe I am already showing signs. I've had asymptomatic pancreatitis, for years. My mouth and lips have recently started burning. I will vomit and poop at the least provocation. There's a growing consensus that we need a sitewide RFC, asap, to discuss any plans to do something special on Feb 11. I'm hesitant to set it up myself, as my attempt to lead this didn't work out so well. A year and a half after you opposed my RfA

I am inviting you to leave me some feedback, 18 months after you opposed my RfA. Do you still believe I am not fit to be an admin? Do you believe I have been able to improve past the concerns you have brought up? Do not be afraid of being too harsh, I am specifically welcoming criticism as I believe it is the best way to improve and I am always looking to learn from my mistakes. I am particularly looking for feedback as to whether you have objections to myself lifting the self-imposed 1RR restriction I had agreed to towards the end of my RfA. Kudos for doing this, however I don't think we've crossed paths since (I've been fairly inactive) so I can't add anything useful to the discussion. On a personal note, I've pretty much had a self-imposed 1RR throughout my editing history per WP:ROWN, there's never any need for more IMO (save the exemptions for vandalism/BLP etc.) but that's just my 2¢. Wikipedia Science Conference

Hello Ben, You're receiving this update because you asked to be informed about the Wikipedia Science Conference taking place in London on 2nd and 3rd of September. Thanks for your interest.

The call for proposals is now public and session proposals are coming in. The two keynotes, and some other invited speakers, have graciously accepted. In mid-May we will bring together a programme, a publicity poster, and an online booking form. Then we'll begin the main publicity and will need your help getting the word out.

Please put in a session proposal if you've been thinking of doing so: the deadline is the 8th May. This is far from the only way to be involved. The conference will need session moderators, a programme review group, and other volunteers: if there is a specific role you are interested in, or if you have any other questions, please email me at m.l.poulter@bristol.ac.uk.

There will be a large "unconference" session in the programme and - fingers crossed - a "hackathon" event two days later on the Saturday, so even if you do not have a proposal accepted, you will have a chance to shape the conference activities.

Hi, this is another update on the Wikipedia Science Conference taking place in London on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd of September.

  • Booking has opened at just 29 pounds, including lunch on both days.
  • Take a look at the (pretty much final) programme if you haven’t seen it yet. With 18 plenary speakers - three from overseas - as well as the large unconference section, there’s a lot going on, and the Royal Society of Chemistry is sponsoring a wine reception in the evening.
  • We are also in the full swing of publicity. Emails have been, and are, going out to funders, scholarly societies, and university departments, but any additional promotion is appreciated. Please share a link, or tell colleagues in relevant fora. All publicity material for the conference is, of course, freely licenced for you to adapt.
  • After the conference there will be two hackathons: one Cambridge on the Friday, the other hosted by Wikimedia UK in London on the Saturday. These are being led by Daniel Mietchen and Stefan Kasberger. Follow the link for more details.
