Information icon

Hello Bellstran. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially egregious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat SEO.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Bellstran. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Bellstran|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Your single purpose appears to be promoting University of Maryland Libraries. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:56, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Magnolia677. Bellstran is editing in accordance with GLAM-Wiki. Many GLAM professionals and WIkipedians-in-residence work to improve WIkipedia using their organizations' resources, as this user is doing. University of Maryland Libraries is active in GLAM-Wiki and has hosted edit-a-thons and editing events aimed at encouraging students and faculty to engage with Wikipedia. A similar practice can be seen on the Smithsonian's GLAM project page which lists employees working to improve Wikipedia using the Institution's own resources. Bellstran is also editing in compliance with COI: GLAM which states:
Museum curators, librarians, archivists, and similar are encouraged to help improve Wikipedia, or to share their information in the form of links to their resources. If a link cannot be used as a reliable source, it may be placed under further reading or external links if it complies with the external links guideline.
Since the user is engaging as part of GLAM-wiki, which allows staff from galleries, libraries, museums and archives to edit and share resources, than the user should not be considered a traditional paid editor working for a for-profit entity like those who would typically require disclosure or the tag of 'black hat editor'.-Ariel Cetrone (WMDC) (talk) 21:52, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hello, Bellstran

Thank you for creating Roy W. Simonson.

User:Spicy, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Thanks for this new article on a notable scientist. Consider adding ISBNs and publication info to the books for verification - you can use the {{cite book}} template for this - and try to introduce links to this article where appropriate so that it is not orphaned.

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Spicy}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

(Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

{{Re|Spicy}} Hello and thank you so much for reviewing my created page. I did not know there was a specific way to link books, I will remember this in the future and fix other pages where I listed books. Thank you for your help! I am new to editing and am eager to learn ~~~~

Spicy (talk) 02:10, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've just seen the COI notice above. It would be appreciated if you could respond to that. While you have created numerous articles on encyclopedic subjects, which are appreciated, it's considered poor form to add links to the same website to numerous articles - especially if you're affiliated with it in any way. Since you've disclosed that you're being paid by UMD on your user page, the WP:COI guidelines state that should not be adding these links directly. Instead, you should make edit requests on the talk page. Spicy (talk) 02:20, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

{{Re|Spicy}} Thank you for this information, I really appreciate the feedback about the talk page. ~~~~

Notice

The article Elaine J. Coates has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:BEFORE shows no results.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Jerod Lycett (talk) 05:54, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Elaine Johnson Coates

Is Johnson/Coates covered in Callcott's history of UMD? It occurs to me that you likely have easy access to this book, which does not seem to be available online.

Also, you likely should have been notified of the articles for deletion discussion. I would suggest being gentle and cautious about joining in, however, as a paid editor. Russ Woodroofe (talk) 13:32, 24 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on John Franklin Witter, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. — Diannaa (talk) 22:40, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Maryland Association of Family and Consumer Sciences requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.aafcs.org/marylandfcs/aboutmafcs-page/ouraffiliate-page. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Links to archive records without digitized materials aren't very helpful

Please don't add links to archive records if they don't include materials that have been digitized or are otherwise accessible online; they aren't very helpful to readers and don't meet WP:EL. Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 18:26, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I also brought this up as a question here to see if there is already some guidance of which I'm not aware. ElKevbo (talk) 18:34, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ElKevbo Hello, thank you for this useful tip. I do think that linking archival materials to a wikipedia page is useful for a researcher who is doing more extensive work, but I do see your point. I will be mindful of this in the future. Bellstran (talk) 18:37, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This has come up before & I agree such links are not much use. Not sure where the discussion was I'm afraid. Various archives/libraries have tried to get people to add these all over the place. If you are the sort of serious researcher who might actually want to look at archive material there are better ways of finding where it is. Many of the deposits are frankly pretty small. If every library did this.....Johnbod (talk) 20:56, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Hoffenberg moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Jack Hoffenberg, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
