Syd Barrett
I reverted your changes to Syd Barrett and The Gnome, but didn't have much space in the edit summary to explain. In case you wish to try to make the changes again, here is some advice.
The article used for citation mentions the "Little Grey Men" book as something that appeared at Barrett's funeral. (It actually says an illustration from the book was used, not the book itself.) It says nothing about his father reading it to him. It may be that the biography book about Barrett described in the linked article says this, but if that's the case, you need to cite the book itself, not the web page, and you need to make it clear that this information comes directly from the book.
"When young, Barrett's father used to read to him and his sister...: - this sounds like it's saying: when Barrett's father was young, which I don't think is what you meant.
As for the claim that the book inspired Barrett's writings directly, even in the biography actually claims this, I find it dubious, because it sounds like it's just the author's guess. There is no reference to an interview where Barrett himself makes this connection, which would justify including this section. The whole phrase reads like storybook purple prose, and really isn't properly biographic. How does the author know all about Barrett's "sense of fantasy and escape from reality"; is this just a biographer's puff piece? Again, if Barrett himself said this, it would make sense to quote him in the article. It's not appropriate to quote a biographer's unsupported theory.
By the way, the lyrics to "Matilda Mother" do suggest his being enchanted by stories read to him by his mother, not his father, but even that isn't proof of anything. One could say it's just a song lyric that could be about anyone's life, and not an autobiography.
Regarding Barrett and his sister being given piano lessons, I can't figure out which citation backs this up. The first citation which follows this statement (an existing citation, and appearing after another sentence about a different topic) appears to be a dead link. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 13:58, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
- I edited the addition to Denys Watkins-Pitchford down to saying simply that LGM was one of his favorite books and that it was read from at his funeral, which is what the source says. If you can find some citations for the rest, feel free to add things back. Gnomes do seem to be a special British fascination; perhaps LGM is one of the reasons for that, but I certainly don't know enough about the subject to say. Really good points - thanks for this. I know that original research cannot be used, but I have my (unpublished) sources for this. It is useful at least to note LGM.
