Conflict of interest and biographies of living people

Hi Anon1-3483579. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing. Your edits to date are entirely focused on the article of a living person, Steve Down. I have given you notice of the discretionary sanctions in place with regard to content about living people (please make sure you have read WP:BLPCOI) and I'm also giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Information icon Hello, Anon1-3483579. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. Editing for the purpose of advertising or promotion is not permitted. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Steve Down, directly or through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like)? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Please reply here, just below, to keep the discussion in one place. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 22:33, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jytdog, I welcome this discussion. In a nutshell, no, I do not have any connection even through a third party. I would like to remain anonymous, but what I can tell you is I'm out of the United States. Here is my situation: As of recently, because I've been busy, I've only been monitoring the pages I have edited in the past, which include honesty Lucky Strike Brachioradial pruritus, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City and Steve Down. The Steve Down page happens to be one I make the most edits on because of the continued vandalism that is always in my recent watchlist. Users continue to blank the page and copy paste advertorial material. But that's a different story that I think admins are aware of. Right before I got this notification, I got another notification about a discussion about an accusation that I was Clark Gardner. I find it humourous that users have accused me of being that individual, as I created a separate page about him which contained information I would assume Clark Gardner wouldn't find favorable (as all the notable information on him has to do with his financial crimes). The only reason I created a page on him a while back was because it came up in information for the Steve Down page and I believed it warranted a separate page (others decided it wasn't notable, so be it). As I have repeatedly stated on my talk/user page and the Steve Down talk page (only because vandals keep asking and making accusations), I have no personal interest in these subjects. However this Clark Gardner guy is involved with Steve Down, it sounds like they must not like each other. Anyways, I actually came across the pages that I monitor by browsing "random article." I am not entirely sure how Clark Gardner is involved with Steve Down other than his relation to Financially Fit, but I can assure I am not him. I can also assure you that I do not get paid for my edits. I actually work in the construction industry to pay the bills while I go to college. I do not recieve any compensation. I do not have any vested interest. I do not have any personal interest. I came to wikipedia because, to be completely honest, I was bored one day. I like research and I realized Wikipedia would be a really cool sort of 'side gig.' Please let me know what you need me to do. -Anon1-3483579 (talk) 22:51, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
None of that is relevant. I do not care who other people have said you might be and anyone mentioning that does not understand how Wikipedia works.
The Downs article is horrible and I am fixing it. I do not believe you have no real world relation to Downs. Based on your edits it appears that he or one of his companies harmed you in some way. I advise you again to read WP:BLPCOI. That is very serious stuff. Jytdog (talk) 23:03, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Jytdog, okay I thought this had some relation to the other comment left on my talk page. My bad. And by the way, I actually think your edits to the page are very helpfull. The article always gets better when an admin steps in. I understand this can be serious stuff. But I have disclosed my relation, that being none. What do you need from me? - Anon1-3483579 (talk) 23:06, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am not an admin, just have a lot of experience and i work on COI stuff along with my regular editing. I find your claim of no connection hard to believe, but that is your story and you are sticking to it.
I have notified you of the discretionary sanctions above so please be mindful of them. See you around. Jytdog (talk) 23:23, 15 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
