Thanks for handling the first batch of comments. I have some family issues to deal with over the next few days which will limit my time; I haven't yet been able to look over Tim's and Wehwalt's comments, will try and find some time tomorrow. But there's no hurry with the review, and I sometimes think that a pause for reflection is better than responding immediately. Brianboulton (talk) 23:33, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note - I hope the family matter's nothing too serious. Also I hope I didn't seem too precipitous in replying to Tim's points: I guess it's partly a throwback to my years working in an editorial office where things had to be done quite quickly, but also it reflects the kid in me who is enjoying the process, not having been at the receiving end of a PR before (so to speak). That said, I take your point that there's no rush. Good night! Alfietucker (talk) 23:51, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Writer's Barnstar
For your continued efforts and inevitable success on Noye's Fludde which I'm sure will be a success at FAC. I hope to see more of you and your work at FAC in the future. Cassiantotalk 18:58, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, Cassianto. Your feedback on that article was most helpful, though I believe we've still to jump the FAC hurdle. Brian and I will certainly let you know when we get to this (I believe Brian is keen to present it for FAC early this coming week). Still, I very much appreciate your welcome, and look forward very much to working with you on such future projects. All best, Alfietucker (talk) 19:45, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, I must be seeing things. I saw on my watch list that Ian Rose had "Closed/Promoted" the John Hay FAC, another excellent article which I have only recently reviewed. I have only reviewed two articles in the last day or and have now got Hay confused with this. A premature award, which is very much deserved nonetheless. I will call this faux pas a Riley-ism! Cassiantotalk 20:28, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Noye FAC

I think we are unlikely to get many more PR comments, and I am inclined to nominate it at FAC on Sunday evening (10th), unless you would prefer it to stand for a while. I am going to be way from home from Wednesday to Saturday next week, with limited online access and of course without my books, so I'd like it to have a few days on the FAC page before my absence. Give me a ping; if you agree I will nominate it, with you and I as conoms. Brianboulton (talk) 22:45, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Brianboulton: I've no objection to nominating the article this evening. It seems to me we've had some very good and useful comments and feedback through PR as it is. Glad that the article has turned out so well, regardless of what happens at FAC (though obviously I hope it goes positively). All best, Alfietucker (talk) 08:58, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, I will close the PR this evening, and nominate to FAC. Feel free to respond to any minor points, e.g. typos or obvious faults in fact or grammar, without consulting me; obviously, points of significance need to be discussed between us and agreed before our responses. It is important that we speak with one voice on the FAC. I am not expecting serious difficulties – my experience is the better the preparation, the smoother the ride, but I am never overconfident. Brianboulton (talk) 11:31, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Right, I have nominated, and advised all the contributors to the peer review. It's my normal practice to wait for 24 hours before checking the page for comments – that gives time for a few to arrive. Obviously you don't have to follow this, but unless something important crops up I won't be looking at the page for about 24 hours from now. Fingers crossed! Brianboulton (talk) 18:08, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Brian, thanks for your messages. Sorry I didn't reply immediately - I was taking my better half and a friend of hers to Rye for our first visit - fortunately the weather cleared for our arrival at lunchtime. Just got back. Looking forward to the responses to FAC. Alfietucker (talk) 22:13, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I know Rye well, from the days I when lived on the Sussex coast. Lots of pottery shops and literary associations. Did you visit Henry James's house? There was Radcliffe Hall, too, and E.F. Benson as well, I believe. A lovely town, and I hope the weather remained fine for you. Here's to luck with the FAC battalions tomorrow. Brianboulton (talk) 22:25, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, Henry James's house is not open on Sundays, but we walked past and wished it was another day (though the weather by then was lovely). We did climb and negotiate the narrow passages to (nearly) the top of the church tower, and admired the wonderful view from there. It was all particularly nice as our Hungarian friend had never visited anywhere in England outside London before, so she got to see a lot of country lanes, sheep populated fields and tree-lined "tunnels" on our drive. As you say, all best for FAC tomorrow! Alfietucker (talk) 22:30, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited John Noble (baritone), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Sea Drift. Two featured article candidates

To all and sundry, near and far: Jules Massenet, the second greatest composer born in 1842, is now at FAC. If you have time and inclination to look in, it will be esteemed a favour. Tim riley talk 21:47, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And to pile Pelion on Ossa John Gielgud is now also at FAC if you are free and disposed to look in. Tim riley talk 22:28, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Phew, you've been busy! I would be very intrigued by Gielgud: not knowing much of his biography but having enjoyed (among several highlights in various films) seeing him act everyone off the screen in Plenty, and seeing him on stage in The Best of Friends and being (perhaps naively) impressed by how he suavely stayed in character when some small object fell off the mantlepiece on the set, I shall read this with great interest. Massenet I've already enjoyed, though I believe it has evolved since I last looked in, so I shall try to give this a careful read. Alfietucker (talk) 22:52, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tchaikovsky (Ukrainian pro-Western composer)

In your recent edit you restored the "short description" field on Tchaikovsky, correctly identifying him as a Ukrainian composer. However, in the same edit, you removed the category tag "Ukrainian composers" and the "bio" stub Ukrainian-bio-stub from the Tchaikovsky article.

You motivated your illogical reverts by stating that the reverted edits were not neutral.

Please justify your recent reverts. Alternatively, please restore the category tag and the Ukrainian-bio stub consistent with the facts stated in the Tchaikovsky article.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.6.84.151 (talk) 09:20, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing out that the Short description had Tchaikovsky as Ukrainian (which I'm certain I did not "restore" - if I did, this was entirely inadvertent): I have now corrected this to Russian. Though clearly he had a fondness for Ukraine, Tchaikovsky self-identified as Russian, and was born and educated in Russia; having a great-grandfather who was a Cossack is insufficient to identify him as Ukrainian rather than Russian. Alfietucker (talk) 09:31, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Congratulations on steering Noye's Fludde through a fine re-write and the rigours of the FAC process. I hope this will be the first of many! Cheers – SchroCat (talk) 07:54, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
SchroCat - thank you, and thank you so much for your support and valuable feedback through PR and FAC. It has been a real pleasure working not only with Brian but also on polishing the article with such a fine gathering of editors. If the process is always as pleasurable as this, I certainly hope to be back for more! Alfietucker (talk) 08:05, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hitching a lift on SchroCat's barnstar, I add my cheers and congratulations. On to RVW, after a decent interval, Tim riley talk 18:42, 19 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Precious anniversary

people who have given pleasure
Thank you for quality articles on people "in the world of music, theatre and children's entertainment who have given pleasure will not be forgotten", such as John Noble, and for adding precision with edit summaries to match, the "innocent reader" in mind, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:42, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A year ago, you were the 577th recipient of my PumpkinSky Prize, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:21, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What a nice coincidence - that exactly a year later I should be seeing my first article (co-piloted with Brian) to be promoted to FA! Thank you so much for your encouragement back then. I hope you are well and thriving. Alfietucker (talk) 08:27, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations for that as well, I missed it, just saw Chopin ;) - I created an article for it, did you know, and two more for that one yesterday, two more today. That part of me is happy and thriving. I have three nagging concerns reducing my pleasure, though: lack of learning here, missing a clear thinker there (who blocked himself), and seeing that some still believe in an infobox war while the last battle was in 2012, as far as I know (if adding an infobox to a lady's bio - not even a classical composer - can be called a battle, - it should be a normal edit, not even especially bold), and I get along well with all people involved. I loved that Nikkimaria came over to tell us about the lack of learning ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:16, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
ps: another nice coincidence that Nikkimaria came over the day I remembered "our" A Boy was Born ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:18, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to hear that your life on WP has been blighted with dramas, and that some people you care for have apparently left (they may yet return). That said, there are *still* some sterling people working here, and while the main thing, or surest source of pleasure - as far as I'm concerned - is article writing, it's a real bonus to spend time with those very intelligent and experienced veterans. Enjoy it while you can! Alfietucker (talk) 11:34, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No dramas, actually, - not learning is no drama, my friend can't return because he blocked himself (explained in detail on that page), and infoboxes: the good thing is there is no drama. All is calm, as far as I see, that whole thing could simply be forgotten. None of "my" infoboxes was reverted in 2014, that's much better than last year. - Articles: another GA yesterday, BWV 12, - Bach has all these wonderful titles ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:42, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear - I've just had another look and see what you mean. I'd no idea it was possible for someone to block themselves - that is rather sad. Congratulations, though, on the GA. Take care, Alfietucker (talk) 11:51, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Did you see the connection of Why leave? and "not learning"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:04, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry Gerda, not having been involved in the events which led to BsZ leaving, I did not find the thread particularly illuminating (I only saw a good deal of what appears to be failure to WP:AGF). Perhaps it's a measure of how much I'm more a "visitor" rather than a regular part of the WP "community" that I had next to no dealings with BsZ. Still, as I said, I'm sorry that a colleague you cared for has left. Alfietucker (talk) 12:31, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No need to comment, there's nothing visible "leading" to the sudden blow, but a link ("last straw") to an edit that questioned a user's "honor". - As said elsewhere, I don't blame people, but such a thing should not have happened. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:10, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for listening so patiently, - music helps, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:51, 17 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Three years ago, you were recipient no. 577 of Precious, a prize of QAI! - I am busy celebrating Reger (writing and singing), and would like to add something witty to the current RfC (another waste of time). Update: I unwatched the page where lack of learning was mentioned, the admin who blocked himself over the edit war about the hidden notices is dead (RIP), the hidden notices are at arbcom clarification, but to my pleasure, BsZ returned, and I like this. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:16, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Folks, I appreciate your wishes, but could I respectfully ask you, Gerda Arendt, to please stop raking up the past? Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 08:54, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean I should have talked about you without a ping? Or that this page should have archived 2014 messages? - Sorry about a sentimental outburst of joy, life is too short, and reading the above reminded me, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:24, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd appreciate it if you just didn't talk about me at all - the period when I wasn't feeling good about Wikipedia and retired for a while is in the past, so please just let it go. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 21:51, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rotherham

I think you are making the same mistake as I made earlier today, of confusing the very specific 2010 trial of five men with the much wider abuses identified in the Inquiry report. Yesterday's report was not into the activities of those five men convicted - it went much wider. We need to avoid entangling the two. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:33, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the alert - though the lead therefore, IMHO, probably needs to be reworded to make the distinction clearer as well as defining the scope of the article. Alfietucker (talk) 13:36, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
See the discussion on the talk page about the possible merger of the two articles. My view now is that the main article should be the one at Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham, rather than the one you are editing. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:50, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've had my say there. Will now edit articles accordingly (to avoid blurring their topics) until there is consensus for change. Alfietucker (talk) 14:04, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You'll see what I've now done. I just felt there was a need to move on, and discussion seemed to have ended for the time being - without, I admit, any clear consensus. If, in merging the two articles, I've omitted anything of substance, I apologise - it would have been unintentional. I hope that at least we can now move forward on the basis of one coherent overview article. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:18, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you've done a fine job - well done! Alfietucker (talk) 19:33, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!! We'll see if anyone else agrees..... Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:39, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I believe it takes two people to edit war. Note that the person who midlessly reverts my correct edits is currently refusing to engage in conversation and explain why they are doing so.

92.8.22.63 (talk) 16:46, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm aware of that - I am keeping an eye on the page so please ensure it's not you who continues to revert, as you have now reached the limit before someone reports you. Alfietucker (talk) 16:50, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Right, so because one editor thinks they own this article and edit wars with me, I get blocked? If you look across Wikipedia you will see about 99% of articles describe people as being English and Scottish etc if British if known. To suggest Peter Sellers isn't English, or that there is anything wrong with describing him as English is insane.

92.8.22.63 (talk) 16:55, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I don't see much point entering further into discussion with the other editor. To be accused of having a "narrow nationalist view" off the bat, from an editor who describes themselves as British on their own user page and actively edits a page describing someone as being Scottish confirms there's no reasoning with them. Their view is against the general consensus of Wikipedia and they're fighting on articles they think they control. My edit was correct.

92.8.22.63 (talk) 17:05, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the policy Wikipedia:Verifiability, and read the essay Wikipedia:Verifiability, not truth which is pertinent to your edits to Peter Sellers. Unless you take this on board, you will be letting yourself in for not only a lot of frustration, but possibly will get yourself blocked. I suggest you leave the Peter Sellers issue for a bit, and think of a more constructive way of trying to argue your case. Alfietucker (talk) 17:14, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Steuart Wilson

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Steuart Wilson you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. FA congratulations

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Noye's Fludde to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon (either on a particular date or on any available date), please nominate it at the requests page. If you'd like to see an FA appear on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with about 1,302 articles waiting their turn at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be). If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. BencherliteTalk 14:04, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks, Dr. Blofeld, and indeed also for your encouraging remarks about having a shot at FAC with this. As I've said at the GA review comments, I'll see how much useful information Margaret Stewart's book can offer and may consider working the article to that level then. Alma mater

The Alma mater of both Kafka and Ernst Roth was a German-teaching university with a German name, as the article explains. I believe that it's historically correct to show it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:56, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I half concede your point: certainly I wasn't aware that until 1918 that the university was in effect split, with a German branch *and* a Czech branch, so apologies for the assumption I made. I've reinstated the German name to help clarify that Roth went to the German branch of Charles University, explaining the situation in parenthesis afterwards. Thank you. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:25, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

South Yorkshire Police

I've now changed the linking to "Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police, David Crompton,". I think a news search for its current incumbent shows more than sufficient notability for the creation of an article about him. -- The Anome (talk) 13:37, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Point taken about David Crompton - will you be writing an article on him? On the other hand, South Yorkshire Police was already linked in the lead, and if it's to be linked again in the main article it seems more appropriate to link at the first appearance rather than the last: I've amended this accordingly. Alfietucker (talk) 13:39, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not planning an article on him currently, but he's in the news sufficiently often at the moment that it seems reasonable for red links to exist. -- The Anome (talk) 16:20, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to be making a small-scale return to WP, so... er... yes, I would love to have a shot at RVW, especially with so fine a colleague as you. RL has been a bit of a roller-coaster, so a bit of time with Ralph may be a good tonic, bearing in mind - as always - that I will be fitting this around RL freelance (paid!) work. Anyway, I'm very honoured that you are prepared to hold the horses for this project. Alfietucker (talk) 23:44, 23 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The prospect of our working together has quite perked me up (not that I was perked down). Would it appeal to you to do the Works if I do the Life? I'm wholly biddable on this. The tiresome necessity of your earning a living can easily be accommodated within a timetable that has neither a start date nor a finishing date. We have world enough and time. Request...

Hi Alfie, (if I may!), I have just been admiring your improvements to Steuart Wilson. I have long wished that there was a decent article on Arnold Goldsborough and wondered if you might think of undertaking it, at least as a starting-point? I have scraped together a few references but they are really insufficient to make more than a stub, while you seem to have Britten-ish sources (which I imagine would be useful) at your fingertips. You will probably think me lazy (as our interests coincide) but I am not sure where to look for suitable sources, and am a bit pushed for time. No problem if not - alternatively if you could recommend some to me I might give it a go... Thanks for your contributions, anyhow! Regards, Eebahgum (talk) 14:24, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ebahgum! Very nice to hear from you, though alas I tend to only pop in here fleetingly from time to time. In principle the idea of tackling a new article is attractive, but I'm not sure when I might do this. I will certainly "park this" for now in the hope maybe to pick it up in a month or so's time. All best, Alfietucker (talk) 19:45, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uncle Ralph

Greetings, and I hope all is well with you. Te absente, I have been busying myself with RVW, who is in my sandbox here at the moment, with migration into the main space imminent. If you have time and inclination to look in I shall be glad of any comments or changes (feel free to edit that sandbox of mine if the draft is still there) you care to make. You are much missed by us music editors and I hope we get you back again properly at some time, when real life permits. Tim riley talk 10:28, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've had a very quick look and my initial impression is that you, as usual, have done a sterling job. I will try to have a more careful look tomorrow. Thank you for your very kind comments. If I come back for more than my nowadays fleeting visits, it will be to a great extent for the pleasure of working with you. Alfietucker (talk) 22:42, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'll drink to that! I'll leave the VW draft in the sandpit for a few days, and any additions or alterations you have time and disposition to make there will be esteemed a favour. Tim riley talk 09:18, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Debate on Bernard Shaw's nationality.

Was he "Irish" or "British" or do we need to define his nationality in some other way? A debate on the subject, to reconsider a long-standing consensus that he was Irish, has started at talk:George Bernard Shaw. Just in case you're interested. Current comments are at "Nationality", at the foot of the page - although an earlier thread at "Irish"? may also be relevant. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 06:12, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Expresso

I don't agree with your edit, calling expresso a corrupt spelling. The OED and the Online Etymological Dictionary call it a variant spelling.OnBeyondZebraxTALK 12:54, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On Oxford University Press's "Oxford Dictionaries" site it says clearly: "The spelling expresso is not used in the original Italian and is strictly incorrect, although it is common." See [2]. Alfietucker (talk) 18:52, 20 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Just kicking the tyres on this, but...

... you did say you might be able and inclined to do the odd bit of peer reviewing. Well, if so, I have Osbert Lancaster up for PR, with eventual FAC in view, and if you fancied looking it it would gladden my heart. Perfectly understand if not, natch! my story today

Thank you bringing Prokofiev to GA!! - While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:59, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today I remember Jahrhundertring, and I'm listening to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival, close to the scene pictured, - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:48, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Always precious

Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. - The premiere of Götterdämmerung was on 17 August ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:48, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
