Notes
The Douro river was extensively dammed in the mid 1970's which caused many of the vineyards closest to the river to be flooded and lost. Many of these vineyards was poorly situated for high quality wine production and often planted with a wide and undeterminable range of grape varieties. With subsidies from the government growers were able to plant more suitable vineyards with some of the ideal grape varieties.
