Twitter references

Re your message about the use of Twitter as a source...

Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, so articles need to be based largely on things published by organisations which are independent of the subject of the article. We call these reliable sources, which basically means that the publishers exert editorial control over what's published, so it can be trusted to be truthful and objective. We aren't interested in what someone has to say about themselves, or what is said on a public forum such as Twitter. Of course in this case, the controversy is about what was said on Twitter but that doesn't make any difference - we still need to base the article on reports of the controversy from reliable sources and not Twitter itself. This may seem a little odd (it took me a while to get used to it when I first started editing) but that's how we try to keep Wikipedia as objective as possible. That's why I left the references to organisations such as the BBC in place.

Another policy is that articles should not give undue prominence to individual events. It's very tempting to write a lot about things which have just happened, but you need to consider whether this makes them appear over-important in the context of the article. In this case, the article is about a tennis player and the Twitter controversy will probably blow over in a short time and ultimately not be very important in the context of the player's life and career in total.
