Ulterior are an English Rock 'n' Roll band formed in 2006 and are based in London. Signed to independent record label Disc Error Recordings they consist of band members Simmons [1], Honey [2], Mickey and MCG [3]. After bursting onto the London scene with a string of live warehouse performances and their debut single 'Weapons' in tow, Ulterior immediately achieved a cult underground following most memorably noted after they were asked to support The Horrors at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2008 at The London Astoria. Ulterior followed up their hype with the collectable EP entitled '15', a limited edition 12" vinyl released in three different colours; White, Cream and Neon Orange.

After having gained notoriety across Europe and the UK music scene for their no compromise live shows "consistently playing some of the most intense gigs in the past couple of years" The Quietus and having also garnered attention from the gothic rock scene after touring throughout Europe with The Sisters Of Mercy Ulterior released their follow-up single, a 10" double AA side vinyl entitled "Sister Speed / Aporia".

Ulterior have been heavily featured in printed press such as The NME, Stool Pigeon, Vice Magazine and Artrocker.

History

Consisting of brothers Paul (Honey) and Benn McGregor (MCG), and guitarist Paul Simmons (Simmons), Ulterior began as a three piece band in late 2006. Shortly after in 2007, Karl Januskevicius [4] (Motorcycle Boy) joined Ulterior full time on Synthesizer helping to develop the bands sound. 2008 saw Januskevicius move onto bass guitar as the bands direction further evolved. In February 2009 Januskevicius quit the band citing health and personal problems on the eve of their European tour with The Sisters Of Mercy. Januskevicius was replaced by Michael Ellis (Mickey).

Ulterior have worked with Zlaya Hadzic [5], a Serbian born music producer based at Amsterdams famous Studio 150. Zlaya has recorded and mixed Sonic Youth and Tortoise.

Publishing

On the 28 October 2008 Ulteriors debut single 'Weapons' was featured on the multi-million selling Playstation 3 game MotorStorm: Pacific Rift featuring alongside David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Primal Scream, Nirvana, Megadeth, Slipknot, and Queens Of The Stone Age. 'Weapons' was also used online for an exclusive worldwide Vodafone McLaren Mercedes podcast in 2007.

Sound

  • Searing our facades of cool with the drum machine driven truth. - Hamish MacBain, The NME

  • Suicide Solution - Vice Magazine UK

  • The quartet look and sound fantastic: shrouded in smoke, lit from behind, and wrapped in their wall of noise, their leather jacket proto-grunge image makes it seem like The Jesus & Mary Chain have killed Suicide, stolen their souls and their gear, and jumped twenty years into the future. - The New Thing

  • The group is a singular physical experience, the pulverizing rhythms and disorienting guitar noise entertaining the role of a sinister tag team in your speakers. Such striking balance, clothed in black. - Jacob Price, Delusions of Adequacy

  • Once in a while a band comes along who not only look and sound amazing but seem to have integrity, offering something more to the listener. A band where you can delve into their world, a band who are not afraid to wear their influences for all to see. Ulterior are one of these bands. Yes they sound a little like Suicide wrestling with JAMC however they definitely have their own take on it. Check out their latest single 15, a wall of pop noise which draws you in and instantly if you are like me you become a believer. This band mean it maaaan! - www.rmusic.co.uk
