There 197 countries today. But some regions fight for independence, a reason that this number could change. If I counted some territories it might go up to kinda 215.

Moving on, there are some countries that where fresh from its independence. Example is South Sudan, an African country, became independent in July 9, 2011. In the first years 90's there were 15 countries that became independent due to the breaking of the Soviet Union,
first is Lithuania, in 1990, then in 1991 goes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.
Yugoslavia
From 1991 to 2008, Yugoslavia broke into pieces. First in 1991, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia. A year later Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent. In the year 2006, two countries became independent: Montenegro and Serbia. Lastly in 2008, Kosovo declared independence but it was not widely recognized.
French West Africa
In 1958, French West Africa broke apart but more to 1960.

Dahomey was established on December 11, 1958, but became fully independent on August 1, 1960 as Benin.
Guinea was established on October 2, 1958.

Cote d Ivoire was established in August 1960
Niger was was also established in August 1960
Togo was established on April 1960.
Senegal was established on June 1960 but it seperated with Mali.
Mali was established in June 1960 but on September 1960 it seperated with the Mali Federation.
Mauritania was established in November 1960
