The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), affiliated with the Democratic Party, holds the majority in Minneapolis[clarification needed]. The city has not elected a Republican mayor since 1975.[1] At the federal level, Minneapolis is situated in Minnesota's 5th congressional district, which has been represented by Democrat Ilhan Omarsince 2018. Both of Minnesota's US Senators, Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, were elected or appointed while residing in Minneapolis and are Democrats as well.[2][3] Jacob Frey, a former DFL city council member, was elected as the mayor of Minneapolis in 2017 and re-elected in 2021.[4] In 2006, the city adopted instant-runoff voting and first used it during the 2009 elections.[5]
