Remote exothermic welding is a type of exothermic welding process for joining two electrical conductors from a distance. The process reduces the inherent risks associated with exothermic welding and is a critical element in OSHA training programs and military installations that require a welding operator to permanently join conductors from a safe distance of the superheated copper alloy.

Operation

The process incorporates a consumable sealed drop in weld metal cartridge, semi-permanent graphite crucible mold(mould), and an ignition source that tethers to the cartridge with a cable that provides the safe remote ignition. Because of the sealed ignition system, remote exothermic welding eliminates the problems associated with standard exothermic welding like repeatability and inconsistent welds in poor weather conditions.

Remote exothermic welds and welding are known by various trade-names. Some welds are refered to as UltraShot Connections. The process is marketed under the trademark UltraShot by Harger Inc.[1][2]
