Parupeneus porphyreus, also called whitesaddle goatfish or kūmū in Hawaiian, is endemic to Hawaii. This species of goatfish used to be the most common goatfish in Hawaiʻi around 1960 but has declined in numbers since. Small groups of Parupeneus porphyreus can be found near rocky bottoms, inside reef caves or under ledges (Keoki). Ranging from depths of 4ft all the way down to 200ft. Parupeneus porphyreus O and often feed on small crustaceans, invertebrates, and occasionally other fish (Keoki). Highly prized food fish, reaching up to 7lbs. Legal harvesting size of Parupeneus porphyreus is 12 inches and its harvesting season runs year long. Bag limit for Parupeneus porphyreus is one per person (DLNR).
Distribution and Habitat
Parupeneus porphyreus is endemic to Hawaii and commonly inhabits lagoons and fore-reef slopes at depths between 3 - 450 feet (1 – 135 m) in small groups under ledges, and in caves.
Cultural significance and Human use
All fish were prized amongst the Hawaiian people, the red coloring of the fish P. porphyreus is what made it more desirable, along with it being good tasting. Still today it is a hHighly prized food fish, reaching up to 7lbs. Legal harvesting size of P.arupeneus porphyreus is 12 inches and its harvesting season runs year long. Bag limit for P.arupeneus porphyreus is one per person (DLNR).
