Ryan Wilbur Babcock (b. July 24, 1979 in Newark, Ohio) is an American attorney, judicial clerk, and prominent legal scholar. He is also a community leader, spending many Sundays running the Manna House, a volunteer food service organization located in Brunswick, Georgia. He currently lives in Brunswick, where he serves as a judicial clerk for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. Among his friends and co-workers, he is known for his charm, razor-sharp wit, and good looks. However, he is perphaps best known for his magnificent head of hair. Babcock is also a published author, having published an influential law review article entitled "Republican Party of Minnesota v. Kelly: Regulating Judicial Speech in State Elections," which was published in the University of Cincinatti Law Review in 2003.[1]
Early Life
Babcock was born on July 24, 1979 in Newark, Ohio. His father, Ron, was a self-employed oil well pumper, and his mother, Pat (née Bodle) was a local factory worker.[2] Growing up in the small town of Newark with no cable television, Babcock found ways to keep himself entertained. He became an avid reader, and would frequently drive around the town square and peruse music records at the local record store.[3] This turned Babcock into an avid music lover at a young age. Some of his favorite recording artists are Hank Williams, Jr., "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
It is widely believed that Babcock's life-long love affair with the game of baseball started at a young age, when he idolized hometown hero Woody English, an all-star major league baseball player for the Chicago Cubs.
Babcock has one known sibling, Carmen, who was a member of the 1990 graduating class of Licking Valley High School in Newark, Ohio.[4]
Education
A firm believer in education, Babcock graduated in 1997 from Licking Valley High School in Newark, Ohio.[5] He went on to earn his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Wright State University in 2000. At Wright State, Babcock was a member of the University's Model U.N. team. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Law in 2003, where he distinguished himself as a member of Bar Review at Uncle Woody's Tavern.[6]
Career as a Judicial Clerk
Babcock began his distinguished career as a federal judicial clerk upon graduating from law school in 2003.[7] Although he was hired for a temporary position with the Court, after he excelled at his job, he was asked to stay on as a permanent law clerk. As a judicial clerk, Babcock has assisted with some of the most well-known and groundbreaking cases to come out of the Southern District of Georgia. He has built a reputation for precise and well-reasoned legal work.
Personal Life
When Babcock is not spending countless hours at the federal courthouse ensuring justice for all, he enjoys watching various sporting events, in particular baseball and college football (his favorite college football team is the seven-time National Champions The Ohio State Buckeyes), reading books on various subjects including history, the law, and politics, dining at one of Brunswick's many fine culinary establishments, and playing his favorite card game, Euchre.[8]
