August 2008 revamp proposed

Categories for discussion, February 2007

Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_February_8#Category:LGBT_people included Bisexual people. Survived, but lots of arguing, the categories I am proposing may get nominated for deletion.

Organizing

Does anyone have any idea where to start organizing the morass of LGBT categories? One way that I don't think would work is to start with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender - there are too many cats, articles, etc that span all four. So what are some other taxonomies that might work? -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 18:03, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

What is wrong with the way we already have, to begin with? Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 18:23, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
Well, it's quite a jumble. Take a look at the category list on the Portal page, for example - in my opinion, it's not very organized. And there are lots of articles that are in multiple categories where simplification would help. For instance, what's the difference between Category:Gay writers and Category:Queer writers?
And there have been several calls for re-organization, including one from you on the WP:LGBT talk page :)
But maybe you're right and the current overall structure is sufficient - I haven't studied it enough to form an opinion. Mostly I'm just looking for input from different people to see what their thoughts are as to what needs to be done.
As a side note, Google reports 98 categories when I searched for "site:en.wikipedia.org intitle:Category (intitle:Gay OR intitle:Lesbian OR intitle:Bisexual OR intitle:Transgender OR intitle:Transexual OR intitle:Transsexual OR intitle:Queer OR intitle:homosexual) -intitle:talk -intitle:wikipedians". -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:40, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm for reorganisation, after I discovered that no-one knew about List of transgendered sports people because NO-ONE had bothered to cat it appropriately. I'm just not really sure of how to go about it, I've been recategorising ti as I go along, but I don't know about the big picture. I've always imagined queer writer are those who either identify as queer or write about queer theory. Would you rather merge them? Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 16:55, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
There does not appear to be such an article as List of transgendered sports people. - Jmabel | Talk 00:56, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Bisexual rights activitsts

I am somewhat unhappy that we appear to be further marginalising a marginal community - which appears that it should be included in the "LGBT" of this category - by having a sub-category for "bisexual"-only activists. Either we should have all three separate "Lesbian rights activists", "Gay rights activists" and "Transgender rights activists" in addition to the "Bisexual rights activists" category, or we should have the single umbrella "LGBT" category. Given that it would be a minefield to separate these out I propose that the umbrella "LGBT" term should be the only one in use. Should there be no negative comments to this proposal I propose to make this change within seven days. --Vamp:Willow 15:22, 31 May 2006 (UTC) [[3]]
