"On April 26, 1869, the Santa Fe's first train-the Wakarusa Picnic Special-rolled out of Topeka, Kas. It was destined for a picnic in Wakarusa, but the tracks extended only seven miles to Pauline. Company officials and other dignitaries traveled the remaining five miles in buggies and wagons."[1]
