I once took a fiction workshop in my sophomore year of college with a visiting author. He told me that one of his favorite main attractions was the shrine of the Nobel Prize in Literature author, Yasunari Kawabata, which he visited on part of a journalistic assignment to write about Japanese food.

Hello! My name is Bea (they/them), and I'm a recent college graduate with an interest in arts administration and fiction writing. My friends consider me to be an aficionado in 60s-80s Japanese pop music. Having studied modern East Asian cultures and literatures in college, I hope to work on pages relevant to that area and promote a more expansive understanding and knowledge base of East Asian culture on Wikipedia.

Some of my favorite authors are Mieko Kawakami, William Faulkner, Jorge Luis Borges, Yūko Tsushima, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Roberto Bolaño, Haruki Murakami, Jenny Zhang (writer), and Banana Yoshimoto. I also like to read manga, with my notable current favorite being Jujutsu Kaisen. My favorite novel of all time is Heaven (Kawakami novel), and my favorite short story of all time is "We Love You Crispina".

My favorite music artists right now (as of July 12, 2024) are NewJeans, Charli XCX, JPEGMafia, Hikaru Utada, Brian Eno, and Playboi Carti. In the feud between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake (musician), I rooted for Kendrick Lamar.

My favorite films (according to Letterboxd) are La La Land, Chungking Express, All About Lily Chou-Chou, and Goodbye, Dragon Inn. If I had to pick a close fifth, it would be the criminally underrated Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, a film which I consider to be a twenty-first century Chungking Express in its contradictory sense of both narrative bifurcation but also continuity across its vignettes; where Wong Kar-wai uses the Cha chaan teng as a grounding element for his film's two narratives, Ryusuke Hamaguchi uses Kinderszenen. As you may likely tell, my two favorite directors are Wong Kar-wai and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
