"Nompere" is an old French word meaning "peerless" or "without equal" and was used as the motto of the Association of Cricket Umpires (formed in 1953) by Tom Smith (later MBE) which becames the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers (ACU&S, ACUS) which was merged with ECB's rival Cricket Officials Association to form ECB ACO in 2007.

It was used as a pen-name for David Whiley (1918-2006), Training Board Chairman, Editor of How's That newsletter and Chairman of ACU&S. More recently it has been adopted by Colin Pearson (1943-) who was Chairman Training Board (1981-1997).
