PEER REVIEWS

*AS A REVIEWER* I think what you have is extremely well-worded, factual, and unbiased, which is what you described how you wanted to contribute to the page. I think your word choice is phenomenal and it conveys clarity, which is beneficial for such a touchy/difficult subject. The only thing I would add is more citations in your edit section because there is nothing cited from where you edited. Even if you created your own ideas from somewhere else it is better to over cite than to under cite sources. Nice work! ~~~~Holly Hart

Great start, Jocelyn!! So far, very professional, un-biased, and sets the right tone. A suggestion -- maybe add in a future paragraph something about a few philosophers relative to sexual ethics, like Kant? You're on a great path, keep up the good work! -Briana

EXPECTATIONS

In recent decades, premarital sex has become a socially and morally acceptable practice among Western cultures. [1]

I have assigned myself to the wikipedia article, Sexual Ethics. Like I discussed on the talk page, I hope to contribute more in-depth information regarding primarily, premarital sex. However, I will consider contributing to the intersexuality and/or homosexuality sections because of their underrepresentation--depending on my ability and accessibility to reliable articles. On a side note, I am really pleased with the fact that the sentence I contributed to the premarital sex of the [[Sexual ethics]] has stayed on the page. I think part of the reason that the Sexual Ethics page is so incomplete is because most people do not know how to write about it in a way that isn't imposing their own biased beliefs upon others. I look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to educate both myself and others on what exactly is sexual ethics.

LEAD SECTION FOR SEXUAL ETHICS:

ORIGINAL:
Sexual ethics or sex ethics (also called sexual morality) are ethics that concern issues from all aspects of human sexuality, including human sexual behavior. Broadly speaking, sexual ethics relate to community and personal standards regarding the conduct of interpersonal relationships. This includes issues of consent, sexual relations before marriage or while married (such as marital fidelity, premarital sex and non-marital sex), questions about how gender and power are expressed through sexual behavior, how individuals relate to society, and how individual behavior impacts public health concerns.
There is a number of facts situations where sexual behavior that is not illegal, or is impossible to prosecute, may be unethical.[1] Ethical dilemmas which involve sex can often appear in situations where there is a significant power difference or where there is a pre-existing professional relationship between the participants, when there is an age difference, or where consent is partial or uncertain. Sexual ethics can also include the ethics of procreation.

EDIT: Sexual ethics (also called sexual morality) is the study of human sexuality and the expression of sexual behavior. Sexual ethics seeks to understand and evaluate the moral conduct of interpersonal relationships and sexual activities from social, cultural, and philosophical perspectives. Historically, the prevailing notions of what was deemed as sexually ethical has been tied to religious values[2]. Sexual ethics involve issues, such as gender identification, sexual orientation, the imbalance of power in relationships, consent, sexual relations, and procreation.

Sexual behavior is impermissible if the individual is: under the age of majority, mentally handicapped, mentally ill, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or there is a distinct imbalance of power in the relationship[3]. Therefore, the individual is unable to consent and it would be considered unethical to partake in sexual activity if he or she meets any of the above qualifications.

FEMINIST SECTION

ORIGINAL:

Feminist views on sexuality vary, and have differed by historical period and by cultural context. For feminists, a woman's right to control her own sexuality is a key issue. Feminists stress the importance of giving the woman herself – rather than the state, church, family or community – the right to freely decide over her sexuality. Feminist attitudes to female sexuality have taken a few different directions, especially with regard to defining what constitutes sexual exploitation (and hence should be prohibited). Matters such as the sex industry, sexual representation in the media and issues regarding consent to sex under conditions of male dominance have been particularly controversial among feminists. This debate has culminated in the late 1970s and the 1980s, in what came to be known as the feminist sex wars, which pitted anti-pornography feminism against sex-positive feminism, and parts of the feminist movement were deeply divided by these debates.[11][12][13][14][15]

EDIT/ADDITIONS:

Feminists seek to redefine feminine sexuality in a patriarchal world, where men have dictated the sexual norms and expectations of women[4]. The primary concern of feminists is that a woman should have the right to control her own sexuality. The woman's freedom of choice, regarding her sexuality, takes precedence over family, community, state, and church. Based on historical and cultural context, Feminist views on sexuality has widely varied. Sexual representation in the media, the sex industry, and issues regarding consent to sex under conditions of male dominance are controversial topics among feminists.
