In 1972 the New Ways to Work Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in the San Francisco Bay area. Its main focus was to help "establish a work world that responds to the changing needs of individuals and organizations".^[3]

In 1978 the International Personnel Management Association and the Institute of local Self Government joined with new ways to work to sponsor a conference on job sharing in the public sector. More than 80 public agencies sent representatives who were ecstatic to learn about the experiences in the increasing number of job sharing projects. Also the Part Time Career Employment Act pl 95-437 was passed. It narrowed the definition of part-time career employment from scheduled work of less than 40 hours a week to scheduled work between 16–32 hours per week.^[3]

Job sharing became even more prevalent during the 2000s, as women have succeeded professionally in greater numbers and proportionally seek out alternative work arrangements.^[1

2000s

in the early 2000s, two important factors began to push the job sharing movement. The access to information became increasingly easy to access and the demographics in the workforce began to change. The birth of the World Wide Web made it easier for companies and job share participants to share information through web tools like email, instant messaging, web portals, online databases and multi-user domains, these web tools allowed employees to share work in a more collaborative environment and in an asynchronous manner. The ever-changing demographics in the United States also drove the job sharing arrangement. With most of the baby boomer generation leaving the United States workforce and retiring, generation X and Y have transitioned their lifestyles to an even better balance between family and work. Gender has also impacted the work force demographics. In 2004, women made up 59% of the workforce, with 50% of them in management professional positions.^[4]

Project Outline

Main Summary: The article in its current state is too short to adequately describe what job sharing actually is. The advantages and disadvantages section needs to be expanded with more concrete research and examples. It also would be beneficial to have a section committed to going more in depth on the history of job-sharing and its effect, if any, on the economy and its implementation in other c.  It also would be helpful if there was information about the methods that current companies (New York Life Insurance Company, Fireman's Fund Insurance Company, and Walgreens) use to make sure that this method is effective.

         3. Discuss job-sharings modern day utilization and methods companies currently use to implement the practice in the United States.

      1. Create a whole new section that discusses the implementation of job-sharing in other countries and areas,  and its successes or failures. The countries and areas  that will be examined are South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, and the Caribbean.

            1. Go into detail about how South African trade unions have implemented job sharing as a method to protect workers rights and create a better work/life balance.

            1. Describe the experiment that occurred in Australia that found that there was positive relation between job-sharing’s flexibility and work/life balance.

            1. Discuss the common practice of job-sharing and how laws and provisions have been made to assist with its implementation.

            2. Address the need for job sharing in Latin American and Caribbean countries and how it stems from a loss in populace due to skilled workers moving to the United States resulting in inconsistent job supply and demand.

      1. Expand the Advantages and Disadvantages section to include subsections going into further detail about the benefits and pitfalls of job-sharing for employers and employees.
         1. Discuss the advantages job-sharing has for employees sighting its effects on work/life balance.
         2. Discuss the advantages job-sharing has for employers sighting how it is a leading cause of  increased productivity and work performance
         3. Discuss the disadvantages  job-sharing has for employees noting a deduction in wages and benefits and the potential complications of incompatible partnerships.
         4. Discuss the disadvantages job-sharing has for employers noting the added strain on managers in ensuring that job share arrangements are compatible and replacing members that resign unexpectedly.
