The Phantom Knocker

The Phantom Knocker phenomenon originated at Bryanston School as a very small operation but has grown to become a society feared and hated especially by 2008 freshers at Cambridge University.

Humble Origins

The myth that surrounds the founding of the modern society is as enigmatic and intriguing as that of the founding of Rome. It too involved two founders, one of whom effectively died and never officially participated. After a series of unwanted knocks on room 3.5 Dorset House, the founder decided to take up the reins and develop this from an incident into a tradition. No single man however, could contend with the wrath that awaited him inside the room...

Development of the Society

Fortunately the benefits of the Phantom Knocker's secret identity allowed him imbibe more than fruit juice every breakfast. Blissfully ignorant, the victims told Bruce Wayne both what had happened that night and what they planned to do the next night to ensnare the Phantom Knocker and were attacked by a savvy Batman only a few hours later. But the third night was a monumental turning point. After a successful midnight strike, bad luck nearly resulted in a rapid capture of the P.K. as on strike 2, a visitor to room 3.5 happened to be leaning on the door and followed in hot pursuit. The Phantom Knocker ran through the long porticos of the palace with enemies on every side, the guard behind him in full cry, almost within reach, pressing him hard with his tennis racquet; however, this young Polites was not to pour out his life's blood before a lamenting father, but slipped into room 6.5 unseen. Exulting in this victory, a final 3 am knock was planned however another rapid reaction from within led to a wrong turn and sent the phantom knocker running down the toilet block not up. At the bottom of the spiral he emerged and burst in desparation into a ground floor room. He was welcomed by the diligent Ben Rowse and concealed in a cupboard.

Titass Rowse offered a helping hand, and suddenly the Phantom Knocker was a team. Immediately Tom Beer joined the society and Tim Ramsey became the guardian of one of the greatest secrets in history. Beer's influence will be felt through future generations as the socity's secret handshake, salute and induction scheme were all developed by this society founder.

Subsequent Attaacks and Future Plans

With a larger team created attacks became more frequent and were never unsuccessful. The team were always informed of the victims' plans for the night and, using this expert intelligence network, coordinated attacks around poker and pot noodle nights. Rowse introduced the long distance knock and the team became unbeatable. The room however did exact revenge with a knock like beating on an anonymous member, known only as team captain of morale, on the final day of the summer school. This beating however has not deterred the team with members agreeing to travel from oxford or, even further away, from the sleepy town of Girton to execute further attacks on the divided and therefore more vulnerable original victims.
