This post arises out of my vote/analysis at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Víctor Afrânio Asconavieta da Silva, and a follow-up by JPL at my talkpage regarding a number of recent AFDs. A previous discussion, with specific reference to Mormons, was held in 2016.

• WP:RELPEOPLE has two subsections. The first is a standard SNG that interprets but does not override GNG/ANYBIO, and should be non-controversial. The second section has two parts.
  • Inclusionary: The bishops of major denominations are notable by virtue of their status. This includes Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran and Anglican Communion bishops.
  • Exclusionary: Other bishops are not necessarily notable. For instance, "The Latter Day Saint concept of the office differs significantly from the role of bishops in other Christian denominations, being in some respects more analogous to a pastor or parish priest." To this end, more than just a church record of a Bishop existing is required to establish notability.
• There should (probably) be no controversy that Mormon bishops should be treated as priests of other denominations
• It's questionable whether a fair number of bishops deemed to have inherent notability have significant reliable and independent non-church sourcing such that they would meet the first part of the SNG / GNG, under the filter of the last sentence of the second part (...more than a church record is required...).
• WP:RELPEOPLE is part of an essay not a guideline, but one which bears weight by virtue of it being a WP:RELIGION subpage.
