Steinert High School (also called Hamilton High School East) is a four-year comprehensive public high school, one of three secondary high schools that are part of the Hamilton Township School District, located in Hamilton Township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The other high schools in the district are Nottingham High School (Hamilton High School North) and Hamilton High School (Hamilton High School West). The school mascot is the Spartan.

As of the 2009-10 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,595 students and 103 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 15.49:1.[1]

Awards, recognition and rankings

The school was the 189th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 322 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2010 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", after being ranked 199th in 2008 out of 316 schools.[2] Schooldigger.com ranked the school as 176th out of 376 public high schools statewide in its 2010 rankings (an increase of 21 positions from the 2009 rank) which were based on the combined percentage of students classified as proficient or above proficient on the language arts literacy and mathematics components of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).[3]

Courses

Steinert offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses in AP United States History, AP European History, AP Computer Science, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP English Literature and Composition, AP United States Government and AP Calculus.

Sports

The Steinert High School Spartans compete in the Colonial Valley Conference, which operates under the supervision of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.[4] With 1,126 students in grades 10 to 12, the school is classified as Central Jersey, Group IV, a category that includes schools with enrollment of 1,120 to 2,339 in those three grades.[5]

The 1992 baseball team defeated Hoboken High School, 5-4, to win the NJSIAA Group III State Championship. The squad finished with a 31-1 record, the most wins ever recorded in a season by a Mercer County baseball school. The team was inducted into the Steinert Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.[6]

The 2006 baseball team won the Central, Group IV title, defeating South Brunswick High School 11-4 in the tournament final.[7] The team then moved on to win the state Group IV championship, defeating Randolph High School 4-1 in the final game.[8][9]

The girls' softball team won the 2004 NJSIAA Group IV State Championship.[10]

In 2007, the field hockey team won the Central Jersey, Group IV state sectional championship with a 1-0 win over Toms River High School South in the tournament final.[11]

In 2007, the girls soccer team won the Central, Group IV state sectional championship with a 1-0 win over Jackson Memorial High School in the tournament final.[12][13]

In 2011, Steinert's varsity lacrosse team finished its first season with a 6-10 record.

The 2011 football team won the first two rounds of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III state championship tournament, defeating Wall High School and Woodbridge High School, and will face Neptune High School in the tournament final in the first weekend of December, hoping to become the first team from Mercer County in over three decades to win a sectional football title.[14]

  • In 2008, the Senior Gifted and Talented (GT) English class organized a 5K Run/Walk in order to raise money for Autism Speaks. The event was held in Veteran’s Park in Hamilton on June 7, 2008. The GT English teacher, Andy Sinkleris, organized and motivated his senior class to make this event happen through education and a personal responsibility to spreading awareness of Autism and Asperger's Syndrome. The student body was successful in holding the event, raising awareness, and raising money for Autism Speaks.[26]
