The Marigolds were an Australian Indie pop band, formed in Perth in 1985.

Biography

The Marigolds' first performance was a 21st Birthday party at The Equator on 16 August 1985, were they played under the moniker of The Jelly Beans. The band comprised of brothers Andrew and Dean Graham on guitars, lead vocalist James ('Jamie') Parry, bass player Ross Campbell and Joe Mansell on drums. It was the first band for Parry and Dean Graham, whilst Andrew Graham had been playing in and around the Bunbury area for a few years in the Whiskey River Band. Ross Campbell had also payed in a number of local Perth bands, Sans P.S, See Through Lovelies and Noizy Bastards, since 1981.

In November 1985 Mansell was replaced by Martin Oakenful (who had also played with Sans P.S, Noizy Bastards and Angry Penguins). Campbell left in April 1986 and his position was taken by Mark Hemery. In July 1986 Andrew Graham left the band moving to Sydney, where he joined Love Minus Zero. Hemery moved to guitar and with Mike Fitzgerald taking on the bass in September 1986. Kim Williams briefly filled for an indisposed Dean Graham in December 1986. Campbell rejoined the band in April 1987, with Campbell replacing Fitzgerald on bass. This line-up remained until the band's last performance in November 1987.

In February 1989 the band reformed for a handful of shows, with the line-up of Parry (vocals), Campbell (bass), Oakenful (drums), Dean Graham and Hemery (guitar and backing vocals).

Hitting the stage for the first time at one of Perth, Australia’s best known venues in 1985, it was not long until The Marigolds began to draw attention to themselves with their endlessly diverse range of song craft and musical styles. The Marigolds output represent good tunes, wide open pop, a bit of garage, and a smattering of country overlapping sixties flower-pop. Just like their namesake, they bloom and then they die.

The Marigolds played a great mix of jangly 1960’s pop and garage rock with a smattering of country thrown in.
