Caroline Doane, a Hubbardston, Massachusetts native, is both a performer and teacher of the Double Bass. Her interest for the instrument began at age 10, while attending elementary school. Public schooling developed her love and passion for music at a young age. During high school, she had the privilege of playing with The Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, based at Boston Universities College of Fine Arts. This youth orchestra exposed her to high-level young musicians from around Massachusetts, as well as respected teachers and performers from Boston. Here, she got to work closely with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, receiving coaching’s and guidance weekly. In addition to the guidance of the BYSO during her high school years, Caroline also had the privilege of studying with Jeffery Dostal, a graduate of New England Conservatory.

After graduating from Quabbin Regional High School in Barre Massachusetts in 2009, Caroline began her bachelor of music degree studies at The University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music Dance and Theatre. At The Hartt School, Caroline spent four years studying with Bang on a Can All-Stars, Robert Black. Professor Black opened up the doors to many different musical possibilities that she had never imagined possible. This great information led Caroline to her close work with different composers, co-creating new solo works for the double bass. The pieces written for her include both show-pieces, such as Brother Upton by James Hodgdon, where Caroline sings while playing, and more serious pieces such as the Study for String Bass by Kyle Landry. Current Caroline is working with Kyle on a new sonata project, a new work for piano and double bass.

At The Hartt School, Caroline took part in chamber music, playing and studying major double bass chamber repertoire, such as Erwin Schulhoff’s Concertino, Prokofiev’s Quintet and Dvorak’s Quintet. Her coaches included Steve Larson, Ayako Oshima and Melinda Daetsch. Caroline loves the close relationships created when working with other musicians in a chamber music setting. Aside from standard chamber music, Caroline has taken part in an electronic show, playing in a dubstep and glitch quintet.

Groups Caroline has played with include, The Hartt School Sinfonia and Phinharmonia, The Seven Hills Symphony, Luck-E 13 and Valley Wing Shift Big Band. One great experience Caroline had the summer of 2011, was when she had the chance to travel to Fortaleza, Brazil to take part in the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho. Here she played principal bass in the festival orchestra and made strong connection with international musicians.

Caroline is currently a Masters of Music student at Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, studying Double Bass, graduating with her degree in 2015 Caroline is currently the teacher of Double Bass at The Worcester Academy of Music in Worcester, Massachusetts, a hired player in the Boston College orchestra, and Principal bass of the Longy School Chamber Orchestra. This summer she will travel to Victoria, BC to study with Gary Karr, at his famous double bass Karr Kamp.
