Antiquity: civil engineering. Naval architecture - parallel to FM-proper. Dark/Middle ages? China? Arab? Newton, 17th-18th centuries - foundations of continuum mechanics. 19th - further progress. Turbulence unknown. 20th century: first ship building, then aerodynamics. WWI-WWII period. Post WWII: large institutes. Supersonics, mathematical turbulence. Massive simulations: CFD, Geophysical FD, DNS, LES. MHD. Current: nanoscale, rheology.
