Writing

  • "we take the villains and put them through our Flash television blender. It’s not that we fully reimagine every single one of these guys or girls, but we certainly give them powers that we think fit better organically in our show."[1]
  • In November 2018, Helbing, in regard to the teases of Crisis on Infinite Earths, said, "Greg [Berlanti] really has a sort of master plan of things, and I'm really excited about how it's going to pay off." Gustin added, "I hope we can stick around long enough to see what's going on with that newspaper article. We'd have to make it four more seasons, five more seasons. It's cool, though. It feels like it's earned." [2]
  • Are we ever going to see The Flash‘s Barry deal with the fact that he’s going to disappear? –Jen When we spoke with Grant Gustin during production of Episode 11 of Season 5’s 22, he ventured, “I think as we get closer and closer to the finale, it’s something we’re going to see him deal with…. I think that’ll be something that continues to pop up — until/if we get to a 10th season”[3]

Critical response

The Flash has generally received positive critical response, with praise for its strong performances, engaging storylines, and special effects. Critics have also praised the show for its ability to balance its action and superhero elements with more emotional and character-driven storylines. The strong performances from the cast, particularly Grant Gustin as the lead character Barry Allen/The Flash, have also been praised. However, some critics have also pointed out that the show can be formulaic at times and that the pacing of the story can be slow. Some also felt that the show has struggled to maintain consistency in the quality of its storytelling and characters development across seasons. Overall, The Flash has been well-received by critics, and has built a strong fanbase of fans who enjoy the series. The show has been praised for its blend of action, humor, and emotional depth, making it a well-rounded and entertaining superhero series.

Ratings

"The Flash was one of those shows, and it didn't work just because it was a comic-book show; those kinds of programs have proliferated in recent years, and not all of them have consistently worked. “The Flash” took off because it was a well-made, well cast show with a specific vision that its creators stuck to with great tenacity. And “The Flash” and “Arrow” are by no means always light and aspirational."
