Quintessence ‘Q’ is a dotted line apparition; a prudent scrutiny of cultural nuance. Having its essence in those recalcitrant parts of our social-order which calls for a sheen patriotic urgency, this youth assemblage[1] came into being on March 25, 2009 juxtaposed with a pledge to conciliate the fainting essence of ‘righteousness’. Bringing together eight youngsters from different spheres, this consensus ‘Q’ finds its place in everyone’s dream-world, which has been putting into practice many prolific society-oriented initiatives with much enthusiasm. Here, every follower is an actor in every possible way and ‘Q’ is not simply awash in mere symbolism and idealism but its essence lies in sheer practice of various endeavours digging its place in different areas. Piercing beyond the prejudices and common beliefs, an unparalleled approach has been dawned in the sphere of youth to bring about a positive change and articulate a sense of equality in the society; ‘The Quest’ is India’s first Socio-Youth e-magazine running under the ‘Q’, the very soul of which is inextricably interwoven with the sole essence of what ‘Q’ has vowed- ‘An inclusive metamorphosis’. Through its own official website everybody is entitled to keep an eye on ins and outs of the undergoing projects. Presently many ambitious members are up to the eyes in Quintessence, leaving their marks through various social networking websites. With positive involvement and an incessant hope towards tackling grave issues Quintessence is in the van with improvements.

The Quëst - an intra personal critique

“The Quëst – an intra personal critique” is a small venture of the NGO – Quintessence, Pune. Inaugurated in August, 2010 and after complete silence of a few months ‘The Quest’ had its bare beginnings back again in January, 2011 and thankfully we have never looked back since. The Quest is acclaimed to be India’s First Socio-Youth Magazine. We operate in an e-magazine format at the moment and have a dedicated web-space. We have some regular writers writing a column. We have been lucky enough to be getting the like-minded youth’s constant support and eventually many more have joined us on our journey and we are looking forward to see some more of them on the board.

Through ‘The Quest’ we try and raise issues that we think around us today and that affects an Indian common man’s life a significant amount. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible to spread and share ideas, views and awareness in a creative manner.

Events

Talent equinox’ 09

Talent equinox’ 09 is the conglomeration of inner forte of youth’s proficiency to shun away the darkness of misfortune. A platform having diverse mental capacities; acts up to the pledge for a better future.

Talent equinox’ 09 traces its origin to the very beginning of a dream- The quintessence; A dream of righteousness with inclusive metamorphosis with a youth flavor. In this prolific drive the capacities of students from 5th to 12th grade were reconciliated through a variety of ‘Q’ - driven ventures by all possible means. Students from various schools and colleges were made to put what is best on their component and what it can serve for the inclusive goal of a new clone of change- Quintessence. This three day event (March 23, 2009 to March 25, 2009) specially targeted students from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area.

Talent Equinox witnessed well-nigh 1500 students from more than 20 schools and colleges, putting in their capabilities with a huge dexterity and a will to pull well together. They had participated in well-diversified events being organized by the event-Talent equinox.

  • Literary events
  • Sports tournament: (including various sports)
  • Representative Creative Arts: Dance, Drama, Singing, Mimicry, Theatre.
  • Art exhibition: Painting, Writing and other forms of expressive arts.

Quintessence’s ethos and contour per se is obliged to perpetuate around such forms of student-oriented efforts in order to armor them with self-confidence and awareness towards a better future.

Over and above the recognition of particular capabilities of young India, an accolade had been conferred upon the Martyrs of The Taj and The Oberoi hotel incidents at Mumbai. The commiseration ended at a nexus between emerging youth and stipulated Quintessence’s motive of empowering India with an equipoise; to turn this talent to account for a better tomorrow of a better country.

Life is a Celebration (L.I.C)

Plunging itself from the initial set- up that is; keeping the righteousness by holding in mind the fruit of success, ‘Q’ reached to the level of a sheer delight, a matter of pride for all the active members of ‘Q’.

Right after one full successful year, a joy relished upon the highly motivated spirits of ‘Q’ which took the form of ‘L.I.C’ (Life is a celebration). It was the time after the victory of ‘Talent equinox’ when equipoise had been instilled among the members to give a boost to its firm pledge towards inclusive change for a never ending celebration. This occasion also marked the launch of our official website by Mr. Shehzad Poonawalla, Vice President NSUI (Pune)

We, through ‘The Quintessence’ whole-heartedly interpret the true celebration in consonance with every particular member and non-member. Our sole agenda lies in the true essence of joy which emanates from the most valuable thing 'Equality'. To plough the fainting consciousness of hopeless people towards celebration and joy ‘Q’ holds various efforts at various possible times to rightly convey the message of equality, importance and inclusiveness.

‘Q’ started its next voyage with the website launch for a never ending celebration through its never ending hope; A new face of change- Quintessence

Initiatives

Spectral Swine Flu

August 10, 2009; to dissipate the fog caused by the unawareness of Swine- Flu on this day, ‘Q’ had started circulating general awareness about this obscurative disease. Eight active pioneers of ‘Q’ shouldered this initiative on every step honestly and with much valor.

To bring people on their toes, all our much hyped members broke up in the city with all necessary information available to bottle up the unawareness level among heterogeneous masses including students from various schools and colleges. Through Pamphlets, details about the etiology, transmission, signs and symptoms, prevention and treatment of Swine Flu were rendered. Protective masks were dispensed to all the students. All these efforts were being undertaken for the very need of inclusiveness, which is our main motto.

Creating awareness among masses is another prerequisite for change-oriented approach. The Quintessence rightly fortified its essence by initiating this step.

Rangg Barse - Splash for PEACE.

As the emerging world is now maneuvered against the global unrest which is rising to the north ‘Q’ also put this illustrious point ‘Peace’ at its nucleus. To fortitude the enlightenment of the masses, ‘Q’ had endeavored to prepare the students’ psychology for the necessity of peaceful environment.

The introductory initiative of the year 2010 was Rangg Barse[2] - A splash for PEACE. It came into being on 23 March 10. This initiative was undertaken by the junior team of ‘Q’ in collaboration with the pivotal team. About 40 members of ‘Q’ pegged away together for this commencement. Rang Barse was basically a group painting activity for students from 5th to 8th Std. It was no ordinary event in view of the fact that all the students had to paint on one common cloth which extended 200 meters. The theme given to the partakers was 'a splash for peace'. The idea of common cloth underlines the ambit of equality with strength; the sparkling of distinct colors on a common platform was casting the patchy yet assimilated hope and a vision towards ‘PEACE’. Students divulged their beliefs about peace onto the cloth by mixing it with various colors and a touch of innocence. A peace march followed the painting session.

All the children along with the ‘Q’ members marched for peace.  This event was viewed by all the Pimprikars. The splash of colors ended with the prize distribution. This event reached all the masses via print media. Newspapers like D.N.A[3] and Sakal covered the event. Rangg Barse - A splash for PEACE, proved to be a successful gambit for Quintessence.

Bachpann

The subsequent initiative after Rang Barse, shouldered by ‘Q’ was 'Bachpann'. Bachpann[4] was the first charitable event embarked by ‘Q’.  Bachpann aspired to raise an acceptable amount for a few orphans and the under-privileged. ‘Q’ was in correspondence with a few orphanages around the city for the same.

  • Bachpann (activity - car wash[5] ) continued for 3 days starting from June 4, 2010. In this initiative, the members of ‘Q’ cleaned the windcheaters of the cars halting at the signals. The plan Bachpann, was executed along the arterial crossroads of Pune. Crucial signals were the ones at University Road,  Chinchwad,  Parihar Chowk,  M. G. Road and Koregoan Park. This event continued for 3 hours per crossroad.
  • Bachpann (activity - auction) involved ‘Q’ members selling paintings outside Mariplex at Kalyaninagar, Pune for the cause.  ‘Q’ with the help of few people tried altering the journey and destination of some orphans and sold some paintings for the cause.
  • Bachpann (activity - holistic collection) tried soliciting old clothes; toys as well as other things people thought could succor the orphans. The collection exceeded 100 kgs and was donated to Johns House of Women and Children, Guruwar Peth, Pune.

‘Q’ raised a respectful,

    • Amount of Rs. 70,000+ via the car wash activity.
    • Amount of Rs.  5,500 via the sale of paintings.
    • Collection of 100+ kgs. Of old clothes etc.

The receipts will,

    • Provide breakfast to 52 children for 3 months. (Bal Gram Sanstha, Shivajinagar)
    • Provide undergarments to 52 children. (Bal Gram Sanstha, Shivajinagar)
    • Pay education fees for 5 children for the academic year 2010 - 11.(Bal Gram Sanstha, Shivajinagar)
    • Provide Stationary (Books, Slates & Rulers) for 200 children for the academic year 2010 - 11. (Anand Gram Sanstha, Alandi)
    • Provide pottery instrument to Bal Kalyan Sanstha.

RE3 : REduce ; REuse ; REcycle

Father of Nation M.K Gandhi rightly endorsed the need for preservation of nature. The ‘Q’ goal of inclusive metamorphosis equally valued the goal of a sustainable development.

In 1987, the United Nations released the Brundtland report, which included what is now one of the most widely recognized definitions:

Keeping an eye on this undeniable quest of sustainable development, ‘Q’ had started ‘RE3’ on July 8, 2010, popularly recognized as ‘World Recycle Day’. It was the consequent initiative after ‘Bachpann’ mainly erupted in Pimpri. It tried to provoke a sense of responsibility; a fruitful obligation on the part of people living almost naïve towards their duty of shielding the environment. Collection of recyclable waste from the residents of Pimpri and from Jai Hind High School & Junior College, Pimpri involved its core.  The objective was to set up dustbins at selected areas within the town with the money earned from the sale of recyclable things. Besides, our orators put forward their views about this need in a friendly manner to the residents.

Several dozen people participated voraciously. The copartner ship between Eco - Club of Jai Hind High School & Junior College, Pimpri and Quintessence is endeavored to lead further this wonderful drive towards a better tomorrow. Left-out parts of the city will also be covered under RE3. This new addition to Q's initiatives proved to be another accomplishment for the organization!

Child Sex Abuse

Q initiated the campaign in April 2011 which is now taking shape in regular activities, film screenings and workshops all over. This cause was initiated with an attempt to create awareness against the delicate issue of Child Sexual Abuse and to support and counsel adult survivors. Our campaign aims at creating awareness among the youth about Child Sexual Abuse and its effects even during adulthood. We hope to affect a positive change during the course of our campaign which will be conducted at a ground . Our campaign will include conducting seminars and workshops to target our audience, which is the youth, as well as having events and street shows to engage the general public.

An important focus of our campaign is to keep it lively and interesting since it will help us to target the youth audience. We hope that if we affect enough of today’s youth they will stand up for the cause and make a difference. We have associated with the non-governmental organizations who deal with creating awareness about Child Sexual Abuse and counseling adult survivors. With the help of prominent organizations, we hope to bring about a change in our society by curbing the occurrences of Child Sexual Abuse. Children are our future and we need to protect them. We hope that children can enjoy the childhood they deserve.

  • Child Sex Abuse

To every human our greatest treasure is our very own body, a temple of sorts that no one should have the audacity or right to abuse. A study in 2007 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development shows that 53.22 percent of all Indian children are sexually abused. In a country where children make up over 42 percent of the entire population surely the protection and rights of these children need to be well represented. In the absence of their ability to differentiate between right and wrong the need for awareness among the parents is of primary importance. The children themselves should be informed on where to draw the line, we’ve always heard that children are the future of a nation, surely their protection should be the concern of the country. Boys are as susceptible to abuse as girls and this common misconception is not the notion most parents have.

Sadly the trauma itself is carried forward into their adolescence and then later on as well. The ordeal itself and its impact cause great distress and anguish to these adult survivors. By suppressing their pain they worsen the situation and the only solution in most cases is rigorous therapy and counseling sessions, without which the secret they hold would be the root cause of their unseen pain. Some adult survivors are so traumatized with the ordeal that they become offenders in the process and so this ugly cycle continues. This is one cycle we attempt to break right at its apex.

Faqra Se

Faqra Se[6] - write a letter to a military hero.

Our soldiers stand guard at our borders, away from their families, for the entire country’s sake. The least we can do is to ensure that their sacrifice is recognized, valued and honored.

‘Faqra Se’, launched in 2011[7] , gives you an opportunity to write a letter to our soldiers. We have general guidelines but our focus is on the content and we give you that freedom of expression.

Write about the world you live in thanks to them, write about how you contribute to the progress of the nation like they do. Let them know, in the simplest of words, that the entire country stands behind them doing what individuals do best. Write to them, let them know that we stand united building a better future for everyone.

You might write about how we are all a huge family- caring and loving beings. And how you feel that your young children should join the forces at far-flung boundaries of India. Tell them about your daughter in the Air Force or your son posted in Arunachal Pradesh. And how your father fought the infiltrators off the peaks of Kargil.

Write a letter to our military heroes and tell them we are proud.
