Sandro Carniel is an Italian researcher known for his contributions to the field of oceanography and climate change. He is currently a Research Director at the CNR Polar Sciences Institute in Venice[1] and serves as the Director of the Research Division of NATO STO CMRE in La Spezia.[2]

Early Life and Education

Sandro Carniel was born in Venice, Italy. He received his degree in Environmental Sciences and completed his PhD in Environmental Sciences with a focus on oceanography at the University of Venice.

Research and career

Carniel has been a CNR researcher since 1997, where he has focused on the physical oceanography of coastal regions and open seas.

He has authored over 250 scientific publications. His research explores the role of oceans in climate change and their effects on the environment.

He is known for his work in understanding and numerically modeling the transport of heat and salt in the oceans and how they are influenced by currents, wind, and waves, especially in the context of changing climate.

Carniel's research extends to various interdisciplinary aspects, including biochemical and sedimentological processes, renewable energies in marine environments, unexploded ordnance at sea, and risks related to flooding and coastal erosion. He employs state-of-the-art numerical tools and data from satellites and remote observations for his research.

Sandro Carniel is also an author or co-author of three popular science books and holds two CNR patents.

Editorial Roles

Carniel serves as a member of the Editorial Board for several scientific journals, including Scientific Reports (Nature group), Progress in Oceanography, Ocean Dynamics, and Atmosphere.
