Projects

I am currently trying to write entries for all the Actaean cities in the Troad. So far, I've completed Antandrus, Rhoiteion, Ophryneion, Hamaxitus, Larisa in the Troad, Kolonai, and Achilleion. In addition to these, I have also written entries for Sigeion, Neandreia, Cebrene, Marpessos, Lamponeia, and Gargara in the Troad and Pitane in Aeolis. I am also interested in the island of Lesbos, and have contributed to the entries on Eresos, Methymna, and Antissa. Ajcee7 (talk) 15:39, 28 January 2011 (UTC)

Missing Material

Collection of material I am aware of but have not yet had an opportunity to properly look at and incorporate into the articles in question.

Kolonai

  • F. Calvert, 'Contributions to the ancient geography of the Troad. On the site and remains of Colonae' Archaeological Journal 17 (1860) 287ff.

Sigeion

  • Two new excavation reports.
  • V. Parker, 'Zur griechischen und vorderasiatischen Chronologie de 6. Jahrhunderts v. Chr.' Historia 42 (1993) 403ff.

Gergis

Κεφαλίων ἢ Κεφάλων ὁ Γεργίθιος (Müller, FHG 3:625-31) - Dion. Hal. Ant. Rom. 1.49, 72, Parth. Erot. 4 (Περὶ Οἰνώνης), 34 (Περὶ Κορύθου), Et. Mag. s.v. Καπύη, George Syncellus, Ecloga chronographica 226, 22, Suda s.v. Κεφαλίων ἢ Κεφάλων (K 1449), Σ Lyk. Alex. 1272.

  • F. Calvert, 'Contributions towards the ancient geography of the Troad. The ancient site of Gergithe' Archaeological Journal 21 (1864) 48ff.

Gargara

Aelius Aristeides 36.18 (and Σ), Σ Dionysios the Periegete 10.39, Quintus of Smyrna, Posthomerica 10.90, Σ vet. (= D scholia) Hom. Il. 8.48 (same at Et. Mag.?), Columella 6.27, Mela 1.93, Germanicus, Phaenomena 582, Pliny HN 5.122, Ausonius, Epigrams 26.15 (?), Ptolemy 5.2.4 (MSS have Ἰάργανον rather that Γάργαρον), Hyginus, Fabulae 115 (GargaSus - a hero) - all sources for Palaigargara? Chantraine on etymology? Coins (will attest Imperial period existence)? Livy passage for Prusias II? Hsych. s.v. γέργερα as πολλά (MSS γέργενα, cf. Varro, De Ling. Lat. 5.11) - cf. γεργέριμος (sc. ἐλαία) = δρυπεπής, 'ripened on the tree' (this would work very well with Gargara being a big olive growing region in more recent times).

Neandreia

I. Alex. Troas 1-2 (relevant to wall-building or nothing to do with Neandreia? Schulz, 2000, 95-6).

Cebrene

Robert (1982) 322-3 (suggests refoundation at Birytis site instead of Çal Dağ), new Antiocheia coins from Assos mentioned be Denger, Göktürk's view that Birytis is where Cook places Skamandreia (new coin finds - perhaps where Antiocheia went), Sibylline oracle to do with city's destruction - I. Alex. Troas 187 T 34.

Pitane
