-"Goldberg argues that both Modern Liberalism (not to be confused with Classical Liberalism) and Fascism descended from Progressivism, and in fact that prior to World War II "fascism was widely viewed as a progressive social movement with many liberal and left-wing adherents in Europe and the United States"-
A) Fascism bears no resemblance to what we call modern liberalism. It is an ultra-nationalistic and millitaristic and degenerate right-wing philosophy that has a lot in common with the usual fantasies of conservatives (the govt. being the teacher of morality and so on.) In the fascist doctrine, the state is the protector of tradition, the family and the flag, it's not so liberal after all.
B) The state-church relations between the fascist varied from violence to cooperation, but they were okay nontheless. Hitler only destroyed churches that were against him and he even tried to unite 28 of them in the "Reich Church." Hitler believed that the Jews should be exterminated because they were responsible for killing Jesus. Furthermore, he favored corporal punishment, opposed state atheism and destroyed the new place that women had in society (so much for the feminazis, heh Rush?) He actually shunned pagans in his Nazi Party (who ere only the few.) Hitler wasn't excomunicated and his book wasn't put into the index of forbidden books. The list goes on forever.
C) Hitler claimed to have been anti-capitalist in 1927, but he did the very things capitalists loved: fighting communists, crushing labor unions and lowering wages drastically. Henry Ford, a fellow antisemite and right-wing hardcore capitalist, showered Hitler with money and respect. General Electric Co. was later prosecuted for having an agreement with Krupp. It would be good to remember the Business Plot when talking about fascism, don't you think Jonah. http://www.ranknfile-ue.org/uen_nastybiz.html
