Bartolomé "Tolo" Calafat Marcus (September 17, 1970 Palma de Mallorca — April 28, 2010, Annapurna) was a Spanish mountaineer. Calafat was climbing as part of an expedition led by Juanito Oiarzabal on Annapurna when he died of cerebral edema.[1]
Calafat and his team were trapped on Annapurna by a blizzard when he became ill.[2] A high altitude rescue attempt was made, but delayed by the weather.[3] By the time a helicopter with doctor and mountaineer Jorge Egocheaga reached Calafat's position, 7,600m on the mountain, it was too late, and he had been covered by snow.[4]
Prior to his attempt at Annapurna, Calafat successfully summitted Mount Everest in 2006 and Cho Oyo in 2004.[5]
