Primary schools

Do we really want to add all primary schools in the county to this template? It would be a very large one. Folks at 137 (talk) 00:10, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No we don't. This issue has been discussed before at WP Schools. Only schools which have articles should be included. I've removed the red link. Dahliarose (talk) 00:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason that it was in there was because it did have an article, but it got deleted on 27th December. I agree that only schools with articles should be included. Tiddly-Tom 07:59, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My original point/ query was unclear. I could quite easily create a stub for each primary school in my locality - even add useful info on some. Even if I did, should they be on the template - wouldn't it be too big? One could argue that a separate "Primary schools in Hertfordshire" (or several, by district) article would be better, with a brief (stub+) bit of info (location, size, special characteristics, etc). Individual articles would usually then become redirects and only if a school's section became fairly chunky would a separate article be created. Personally I don't believe that every JMI warrants an article on its own. Folks at 137 (talk) 20:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a general - yet disputed - rule of thumb is that almost all secondary schools are notable, but not all primary schools. My personal opinion is that all schools should be able to have a page about them, but policy states that they are only allowed if notable. Tiddly-Tom 20:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The current consensus is that primary schools are not generally notable. A lot of primary school articles have been deleted in recent months and very few survive an AfD. Very few primary schools meet the notability criteria to qualify for a page of their own. I think it's therefore best to include in the template only those primary schools with articles. There will only ever be a very small number. These templates are supposed to be navigation aids and I don't think it's much help having a link to a redirect page. Dahliarose (talk) 20:46, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We're in agreement on notability of individual schools, although en mass, they are, IMO, notable. I was not suggesting template links to individual school redirects (that would be silly) - my proposal would be as above with the template pointing to locality or district articles that contain a number of schools such as the incomplete sample at Primary schools in Dacorum. It needs expansion/ development, but I hope it illustrates my thoughts. Folks at 137 (talk) 22:51, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I misunderstood. I haven't come across a page like the Dacorum one before but it seems like an excellent idea. I've just had a look at these Hertfordshire primary schools in this template and in the current climate I would say that the vast majority are prime candidates for deletion unless someone can make substantial improvements. Only Little Munden and Manor Park appear notable because of their listed buildings. Dahliarose (talk) 20:43, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

New category?

It's struck me how many schools in Herts have relocated from London.

Current schools in Herts: Ashlyns School, Dame Alice Owen's School, Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Haberdashers' Aske's School for Girls, Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood, Parmiter's School, and St. Clement Danes School.
Former schools in Herts: Royal Caledonian School.
Current schools elsewhere: Charterhouse School.

Anybody know of a category that covers this grouping? Or have a title more pithy than Category:Schools founded in London which have since relocated? Or could possibly include St. Edmund's College, Ware which seems to have relocated everywhere except London at some point or another in its history. Bazj (talk) 14:49, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Special group

Personally I feel the redlinks are a gentle reminder to create the articles someday. But not today. Nuking the section just because it's all redlinks feels like pretending the schools don't exist, just because special schools aren't "sexy" and because their alumni are less likely to write a wiki page. My 2¢ worth. Bazj (talk) 19:29, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but at least those that cover only the primary range are unlikely to ever have articles. Kanguole 20:44, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That would conform with the general rule that secondary schools are notable and primaries aren't. Bazj (talk) 11:43, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
